How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

"I need to Create a CUSTOMER as the PARENT Customer, "Shiloh National Parks" "

Yes. Open the Customer Center, make sure you are viewing that in Hierarchical View, and Add that customer name.

"then move the existing customer to a JOB"

Yes; pause the cursor on the little handle to the left of the Name, to see your mouse become a Four-Headed arrow. Click and drag it Under, then to the Right = Indent, under the new Customer Name. This = Demoted to be Job.

"How do I do This, seeing that there is no drop down list on the upper right hand side for edit customer job screen?"

That only shows up with Edit Job.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

Hi there, ravensthroat!

Thanks for joining this thread and letting us know about the QuickBooks product you're using. The answer provided by @qbteachmt above is really interesting and helpful. Allow me to share the steps specifically for QuickBooks Desktop Mac.

The customer names in the product you're using don't have a handle or diamond to the left of them. Instead, you can see a clickable arrow to show all the jobs associated with it.

To convert an existing customer to a job, you need to do it from the Add/Edit Multiple Customer window. Here are steps to guide you through:

  1. Open the Customer Center
  2. Locate and right-click the customer name you want to change.
  3. Choose Add/Edit Multiple Customer:Jobs.
  4. Go to the Customize Columns button.
  5. In the Available Columns section, select Job of: and click Add.
  6. Place the Job of: item below the Name by pressing Move Up continuously, then click Ok.
  7. Look for the customer you want to alter and pick the new Parent customer to connect it to in the Job Of: column.
  8. Select Save Changes

Please note if that customer already has transactions, they will now be assigned to the new parent customer (as a part of the job).

If you have other questions in mind, feel free to reply below. I'll be delighted to answer them for you.

I have a customer, that I need to make a job so that I can have another job assigned to using the same customer.  I AM SO FRUSTRATED both with apple and quickbooks.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

Hello,  thanks for taking the time to reply . I did indeed phone in for support and after an hour on the phone, the tech sent me an email w/two steps: Click and drag one customer under the other to make the first one a job.  I do understand what he and also the written replies have been, however, I am not able to successfully do this on this macbook pro, high sierra version.  I still cannot seem to figure out how to click and drag while qb is open? I guess I am just going to have to make up a duplicate customer with a different job and just tell my accountant it's yet another glitch in QB using desktop for macbook pro.  Unfortunately, there are many bug issues when using the mac as we have learned.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

I appreciate you for coming back to the Community, ravensthroat.

Allow me to join in the conversation and share some insights about moving an existing customer to a job in QuickBooks for Mac.

I've consulted our Mac support and they verified that this feature is not yet available in QuickBooks for Mac. You'll have to create a new job under the correct customer name and move the transactions manually.

Here's how:

To add or edit a job:

  1. Choose Customer, then select Customer Center.
  2. Select the customer you’re doing the job for.
  3. Click the + menu at the bottom of the customer list and click Add Job (see screenshot below).
  4. Enter the name of the Job.
  5. If anything shown in the Address Info section is incorrect for this job, change it. The information
  6. QuickBooks fills in comes from your customer’s record. If you make any changes here, the changes affect only this job.
  7. Click the Job Info tab. Enter the information about the job and click OK.

To move the transactions to the new job:

  1. Open the transaction.
  2. Update the customer's name.
  3. Click Save.

I also think that this feature would help you run your business better so I've forwarded your ideas to our Product Developers. To help us make QuickBooks for Mac better, I'm inviting you to send your feedback. Most of features come from our customer's ideas.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

  1. Choose QuickBooks, then select Preferences.
  2. On the Preferences pane, select Feedback.
  3. Click the Enable sending usage data to Intuit check box. The preference is enabled by default.
  4. Close the Preferences window.

Thanks for letting us know your experience. I'm happy to help some more if you have other questions about QuickBooks for Mac. Have a good one.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

Hi there, thanks so very much for taking the time to respond.  I will print this out and see if we (my bookkeeper and I) can figure it out.  The picture doesn't look like our layout but we will attempt to fumble thru it.  It means alot that you replied.  I didnt get anywhere on the phone call so thanks again.  Also, for confirming that this isn't an option for desktop for QB for macbook pro.  I was beginning to loose my mind, what's left of it.  lol.  Thanks again, take care, ginger

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

When you do this will it move all the customer invoices to the new job as well? How does this affect the Bills that were previously applied to the original customer?

Thanks

Thanks for joining on this thread, @FLumber.

Yes, the customer’s invoices will also move to the new job. Changing a customer into a job doesn’t affect the transactions previously created from the original customer since they will remain on the Transactions List.

When you create a new transaction, it will be added to the list of entries. For additional resources on how to manage a customer and a job, check out our self-help articles found in your QuickBooks.

Here’s how:

  1. Tap the Help menu at the top to select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. This will open the Have a Question window.
  3. From there, type in customer or job, and then it displays all topics based on what’s entered in the field box.
  4. You’ll have to click on the link to view the complete information.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

I would like to turn customers into jobs as well in order to "parent" certain customers solely to be able to view this new parent account in "Snapshots". But it will not move the Customer to the new account as there have been payments made to the jobs that are under the Customer I want to move.

Does the "Snapshot" feature work for classes? I don't believe it does but it would be great if Quickbooks Enterprise included this feature. I have all customers and expenses classed so that I can run P&L by classes but this doesn't provide the same information as the snapshot feature mentioned above. Or does it? Any help with this issue would be great.

Thanks!

Hi there, ROFG-JJACKSON.

Thanks for dropping by the Community with your question today. I'm happy to provide some feedback, unfortunately, at this time the Snapshot feature doesn't work with classes. However, i'm going to recommend it to our Product engineering team to see if its a feature that can be implemented in a future update. Thank you for your time and keep an eye on the QuickBooks Blog as it has all your update information you need.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

I'm back, still having the same issues from a couple of years ago.  I've asked my accountants, this forum, friends, neighbors, FB groups and INTUIT/QB help/but no help.  HOW DO I TURN EXISTING CUSTOMER INTO A JOB?? on MacBook Pro Desktop.  Apparently this is an issue!!!

Is there ANYONE that can help? Or do i just have to pay the accountants and book keeper to fumble thru this MESS?!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

Not going well.  I give up every year but now I am back to the SAME issue.  HOW DO I CHANGE A CURRENT CUSTOMER TO A JOB USING MACBOOK PRO DESKTOP?  Is there ANYONE that can help?  I am NOT going to call and wait for hours on a call to speak with someone I cannot understand and that cannot help me!

I've tried FB groups, online help, call in help, accountant, friends, neighbors, apparently the desktop macbook is a mess and a problem and NO ONE recommends it!  WEll I'm stuck with it and need some help here.

Appreciative, but not optimistic,

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

Every few months I go thru this then give up.  Still NOT working and not the same screen shots as you provided.  I am more than frustrated and tired of making excuses to bookeepers and accountants when we have multiple jobs for one customer.  It's not that complicated, but when we get a returning customer I have to give them a 'job' Makes sense but most are not returning customers so none of them are set up w/jobs!  It's sort of a mess. And not being able to change a current customer to a job makes it messier!

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

If you actually just trying to make a current Customer into a Job of another "Customer" then goto:

Customer Center

Select the dropdown for the New Customer &Job and select Add Multiple Customer and Jobs.

In this screen you can move around your Jobs and Customers as needed at one time and not have to try and mess with it on a one to one basis as it takes longer and can be frustrating to get it to toggle right with the dang diamond.

I hope this helps all, I have the same client in two different places and this is the way I can keep them straight ( categorize by type of client(this becomes the company)).

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

I tried this, but it states customer number already exists and won't let me connect them. I have two customer numbers and would like to make one the job of the other and keep all the information, I cannot change the name (which is a number) because it is specific to residents. Is there a way to make customer 465014A the job of 465013 when both already exist and have invoices and payments. I am working in Enterprise 20.0 desktop.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

You're already on the right track in managing your customer list in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @bookkeeper352. I'm here to make sure you're able to change the name of your customer/job to keep your account updated.

The error message indicates that you've entered a duplicate customer name (number). To make customer 465014A the job of 465013, you may tweak the duplicate one (i.e., 465014AB) to make necessary changes. You need to select the name in red (465014A) to know the details and make updates.

Also, I'm adding these articles to further guide you in managing your customers and jobs in QBDT:

Keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about managing the customer list in QBDT, I'm always ready to help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @bookkeeper352.

How do I turn a existing Customer into a Job?

I spoke to someone with QB's help, we explored how to do it, the first time we did it, it messed up the customers, we had to use a backup to restore. We went into a sample company and tried again, it worked perfect. We went back into the company and tried again, it worked perfect, do a back up before you start the steps below :).

First: Single user Mode

Second: Hierarchal View

Third: Click on customer you want to become a job for another customer

Forth: Click on little diamond next to name, drag just a little to the right just a little, it will create a job for the main customer. In my case I have a resident that owns two properties, each had it's own ID #, I wanted one customer with a job attached, so I still had both ID #'s, but the were connected as a customer and a job.

Worked like a charm, the second time we tried :).
