I have the steps you can perform to get the customer list to stay on hierarchical view, @chad25.
The customer list may have become damaged. That's why it switches back to flat view each time you close a sales transaction.
Let's first re-sort the list so it will go back to its default order. I'll guide you how.
The screenshot below shows you the last two steps. For the detailed instructions, check out this article: Re-sort Lists.
Second, make sure to select Hierarchical View from the customer list again. This way, the program will stay on your preferred view.
Additionally, you can run and customize any sales reports in QuickBooks. These will help you efficiently manage your sales and expenses per customer within a specific period. For more details, visit this article: Customizing Sales Reports.

Hi. I tried resorting the customer list & it still doesn't stay in hierarchical view. I'm using QB Pro 2019, & just starting using Jobs to keep track of change orders & additional work, so this is really important to me. Any solutions? I've also tried rebuilding & verify data. That didn't work either.
Hi there, SuperiorGCAZ.
After selecting the Hierarchical View from the Customers window, let's go to the settings and save the current desktop view.
Here are the steps:
Once done, go back to the Customers page and check to see if it stays in the Hierarchical View. Otherwise, reach out to our Customer Care Team to investigate this further. Before doing so, please check our support hours here. Then follow these steps:
Please don't hesitate to leave a comment here if you have any additional questions or other concerns. Stay safe.
I am having the same issue. While these instructions do work, the minute you move from the customer list and come back, it is back to flat view. I have to do these steps every time? There has to be a fix to this issue. There was a recent update. I think this is a bug from that.
I tried this too. It still does not work.
We appreciate you for performing the steps provided by my colleague, Ana.
I'll be here adding help in fixing your issue with your customer list not staying in a Hierarchical view.
Beforehand, we'll need to create a backup to avoid losing any of your data. Then, we'll now be going to run repair tools for QuickBooks Desktop.
Here's how:
Afterward, we'll need to Run Quick Fix my program, it'll run a quick repair and will shut down any background processes on your program.
If the error still persists, Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool this will fix common installation issues.
Once done performing the steps, if the error in your customer's list still occurs. I recommend contacting QuickBooks Desktop support to help you point out the root cause of your issue and fix it.
Keep me posted if you have more questions about the customer list, providing assistance to you will be an honor. Have a blessed year!
Went through all these steps including the Tool Hub - restarted PC and QB and still will not stay in Hierarchal view?
Thank you for trying all the solutions provided by my colleagues above, @kboyenger.
Let's try some additional troubleshooting steps to keep your customer center in Hierarchal view. Such as resorting all your lists. Resorting the lists will clear any damage that's within them that can cause view changes to not stay. I've included some steps below to resort.
You'll want to be sure to complete these steps for all the lists. You can see additional details about this process in Resort lists in QuickBooks Desktop.
Once the lists have resorted, please log off and close QuickBooks so the changes can take effect.
However, if you still notice the changes aren't saving, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. This way, one of our agents can review your account in a secure environment and investigate this matter further.
Please keep us posted. You can always come back to this thread if you have any other questions or concerns. Take care!
