When saving a new invoice (with an existing customer) I get "you must select a customer"

Hi Kevin.

Usually, this error message happens when there is no customer name added to the invoice. Please make sure to add the name before saving the transaction. I'm adding this screenshot to show you how.

If you're getting the same result once the customer's name is added, I recommend reaching out to our Support Team. This way, a representative can add your account to the list of affected users in the current investigation about this error message (INV-56604 Error "Something's not quite right. You must select a customer..." when trying to send an invoice- INTERMITTENT issue). Once added, you'll automatically receive email notifications of the latest updates.

To contact support:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?).Select either tab to get started:
    • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
      • Start a chat with a support expert.
      • Get a callback from the next available expert.
    • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option, or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.

When saving a new invoice (with an existing customer) I get "you must select a customer"

This is an error message I receive FREQUENTLY when a customer is already selected.  When I go into an invoice that has already been created and edit it, I get this message.  The only way to clear it is to select a different customer and then go back and select the proper customer.  Very frustrating and time consuming!

I know that this has never been easy for you, LaurenBurgess. I'll make sure that you can get rid of this error.

I checked our records here and found out that this investigation has already been resolved. There are times that accumulated cache in the cookies prevents the bug fixes and security patches from being applied to the program. To rule this out, you can perform some basic troubleshooting steps.

Start by logging in to your QuickBooks account through a private or incognito window. Check out shortcut keys below:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + P for Firefox and Microsoft Edge
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N for Chrome
  • Press Command + Shift + N for Safari

Once you're in, create a dummy invoice or open an existing invoice. If the error is now gone, close the incognito window and go back to the regular browser. Next, you'll have to clear its cache to get rid of the stored site data and enhance your browsing experience. Another thing you can do to further isolate the issue is switching to other supported browsers.

However, if it didn't make any difference, I'd recommend contacting our technical supports. This way, we'll be able to pull up your account and investigate this issue again. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Select Talk to a human.
  3. Enter "Talk to a human" again in the search bar.
  4. Choose I still need a human, then click Contact us.
  5. Select Get a callback or Send a message to start a conversation.

I'm also adding this article to help personalize the invoices that you send to your customers: Customize sales forms.
