Write off bad debt

Good evening, @KimL23

Thanks for taking the time to follow up with us.

I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. This way, one of our tech support agents can use their tools to review your account in a secure environment and screen share with you to take a deeper look into the setup.

You can use the link I've included below to connect with an agent.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Take care and have a great rest of your day!

Write off bad debt

Hi there, @KimL23.

I want to ensure you're able to write off bad debt in QuickBooks Desktop.

As mentioned by my colleagues on the thread, we'll have to make sure that you've added an expense account to track the bad debt and closed out the unpaid invoice.

In your case, since the amount is still showing in your Income section after performing the recommended steps, this time, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. They have tools like screen-sharing that can help double-check the setup on your account to look for the root cause of the issue and apply a permanent fix.

To reach them, here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Help menu at the top.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help
  4. Type Contact Us in the search box. Then, click on Contact Us at the bottom.
  5. Select the way you wish to connect with support.

You can also check out this link for more information: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support. Ensure to review their support hours, so you'll know when agents are available.

For future reference for tips and related articles about the "How Do I" steps in QuickBooks Desktop, visit our QuickBooks Community help website.

If you have any additional questions or anything else about QuickBooks, let me know by clicking the Reply button below. Take care always, and have a great day.

Write off bad debt

I wrote off $19,500 for bad debt for a client that went out of business and never ended up paying for services used.  My CPA is telling me it should be an expense and not be left in the balance sheet.  Currently it is a debit under an account i created "allowance for bad debt"

Should i create another JE in the current year and credit bad debt and debit accounts receivable?

Many thanks

Write off bad debt

Reymond, I'm trying to clear up my A/R Aging, we have a "Balance Due" amount for a customer "Bad Debit".  I followed this back to a GL from the CPA which includes several debit's and credit's listed and the one I was looking for as well 1200- Accounts Receivable "debit" with customer name- Bad Debit, (instead of individual customer's) being credited to "Bad Debit Expense".  But now it show up as being owed on the A/R Aging and the owner of the company wants it off the A/R Aging.  How do I go about fixing this.  Thank you, JNRAlaska

Write off bad debt

I’m here to help so you can settle the balance amount, @JNRAlaska.

Once the bad debt is written off, the program will automatically mark the invoice as paid. Also, the balance will no longer show up on the A/R Aging report.

You’ve mentioned my colleague’s name. If you followed his instructions, you’ll want to review the records to verify how it was added.

Otherwise, you’ll need to perform the said recommendation to settle the open balance. You can use these resources for additional reference:

Moreover, here's an article to help ensure your accounts are balanced and accurate: Learn the reconciliation workflow in QuickBooks. It includes instructions to fix issues and ways to make changes after the process.

If you need further assistance with managing your transactions, please don’t hesitate to add a comment. We’ll be here to help. Always take care!

I appreciate you following the thread, @Dancosta72.

I want to ensure your concern is fully addressed, and I'm here to help. However, I need additional information about the exact issue you've encountered, so I can provide you with an accurate solution.

Can you also specify what process from the thread you're referring to? I'd appreciate it if you included what QuickBooks product and subscription you're currently using. You may add screenshots, as well, for us to get a better picture of your concern.

I'll be here in the community space. Feel free to leave a reply, so I can help you get through this. Take care!
