Recording credit card payment QB adds it to the balance rather than subtract

I have tried to post the payment as an expense, bill payment and transfer from operating bank account to credit card account . QB add it to the balance of the credit card account rather than subtract it. How should I handle the payment to the credit card account .

Hello there, Mmiller2.

We have different ways to record credit card payments:

  • Write a check

  • Create a transfer

  • Make a payment after reconciling your credit card

  • Use banking download

To record it properly, let's make sure the accounts used are correct.

If you'll choose to write a check, here's how:

  1. Click the Pus sign (+) icon, then choose Check.
  2. Click the Payee drop-down arrow, then choose the credit card's name (vendor name).
  3. Click the Bank Account drop-down arrow, then choose the bank account from which the payment is made.
  4. Enter the amount paid.
  5. Under the CATEGORY column, choose the credit card.
  6. Click Save and close

Paying a bill is not an expense, it is just paying down a debt, money you borrowed

on the payment use the credit card account as the expense (reason) for the payment

Is it possible to address the actual question directly and not give a bunch of options? What is the right way?!

The Community has your back, @whiles.

Refer to these steps to record your credit card payments in QuickBooks:

  1. Go to the + New button.
  2. Under the Other tab, select Pay down credit card.
  3. Select the credit card you made the payment to.
  4. Input the payment amount.
  5. Type the date of the payment.
  6. Choose the bank account you paid the credit card with.
  7. If you made a payment with a check, select I made a payment with a check. In the Check no. field, enter the check number, or if you paid electronically, enter the EFT number.
  8. Once done, select Save and Close.

How does such a large company completely screw up this simple task?  Whoever programmed QB to mess up credit card balances is an idiot, and I have wasted so much time fixing QB's stupid processes.  Why treat your customers this way?
