When Importing products QBO does not accept Inventory as TYPE. When I click the drop down only Service and Noninventory are available. But I am importing Inventory items.

Thanks for choosing QuickBooks, lazerthin-gmail-.

You'll have to make sure that the BUY and TRACK boxes are checked so you're able to use Inventory as your item Type. I've attached a screenshot for your visual guide.

Once corrected, you can re-import the file to see the changes.

For your reference, you'll want to run Inventory reports in QuickBooks: Run Reports In QBO.

Which version of QuickBooks Online plan do you have?

For inventory features in QBO, you will need the Plus plan or Advanced plan. Also, if you've got the required plan, make sure first to enable it from the Gear settings.

When Importing products QBO does not accept Inventory as TYPE. When I click the drop down only Service and Noninventory are available. But I am importing Inventory items.

I am having this same issue.  Going on 5+ hours trying to figure out.  2 hours on the phone with support.  I was told to upgrade to Plus and then to Advanced.  Did this.  Tracking in settings is turned on.  Still getting an error in "type" in the 3rd stage (import) where it is making me choose "service" or "non-inventory" as my only options.  This is mindboggling.

I am using the exact excel sample sheet provided by QB.  I have all the required fields.  I am anchored to an income account "inventory asset"... I'm at a loss.

Screenshot of QB fail point (note: I have the click tabs "sell" and "buy" to the left but not track and tracking is on.  Also a screenshot of my excel file here.

PLEASE HELP ASAP.

Hi there, @soilex.

Making sure you can import your inventory list in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is my priority.

Since you already turned on the inventory tracking feature and still can't import the inventory list, let's now review your file. Make sure that Inventory is used as your item Type. Once done, re-import the file in QBO again.

If the same thing happens, let's now check if you can select inventory when importing a sample file from QBO. You don't have to proceed to import the file, we just need to see if you can choose Inventory using the sample file. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and choose Import Data.
  2. Click Import products and services.
  3. From the Select a CSV or Excel file to upload field, click Download a sample file.
  4. Once downloaded, check the file format and save it.
  5. Then, go back to the Import products and services page and select the sample file.
  6. Click Next.
  7. From there, check if you can select Inventory under the Type column.
  8. Make sure also to check the BuySell, and Track boxes.

If you encounter no problem, go back and compare the format of the sample file with your original data. You can also check the Formatting tips guide in this articleImport products and services into QuickBooks Online. Once done, re-import the file again.

However, if the issue persists, I highly recommend reaching out again to our Customer Care team. I know that you already contacted them, but they are the ones who can securely see your account to determine the root cause of the issue.

You may also want to run inventory reports to monitor items you buy or sell in QBO.

If there's anything else I can do to help you with importing your inventory lists in QBO, feel free to post a comment below. I am always available to lend you a hand. Have a good one.

Hi, thank you for the reply.

  • I've reformatted many times.  No changes.  Still forcing service or non inventory (no inventory).  Again, I built my spreadsheet FROM the sample sheet provided by QB.
  • Dummy import- this was a good idea.  I uploaded the sample doc straight to the import portal.  Still not able to choose "inventory" -- only ervice or non inventory. (see attached)
  • I will contact customer care again but this is insane... especially after 2 hours on the phone with support.  This seems like a backend issue.  Is there not a way to reset my account?  Perhaps its not showing the Advanced status?  Also,  is there a way for me to know I am in "advanced" mode besides seeing it active in my billing?

Thanks

Thanks for your swift reply, @soilex. I appreciate for doing all troubleshooting needed. I can feel the need to have this resolve quickly.

Yes, there's a way to know if you're using the Advanced version you're using. You should see it in the Billing and Subscription section like the screenshot below. I'm using the QuickBooks Plus version:

Additionally, Advanced is the highest version in QuickBooks. Hence, you won't see the Upgrade your plan option on the Billing page.

Should there be a need for you to reset, you can. Check out this article to learn more about starting over in QuickBooks Online. Follow the steps on the link according to the length of time you've been using QuickBooks.

For future reference, check out our help articles for some tips and steps needed for your other QuickBooks tasks. Here's the link: Find QuickBooks help articles for QBO.

I'm looking forward to answering your next posts. Have a good one!

@soilex

Utilize the trial version of an importer tool to isolate the issue.

If the same issue persists, you should open a new trial account to make sure.
