The tracking categories (classes and locations) options are only available in QuickBooks Online Plus, kamini.

You might want to upgrade your subscription if you're using QuickBooks Online Simple Start or Essentials.

Here's how we can turn on the class function:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner and select Account and Settings.
  2. Select Advanced tab and go to the Categories section.
  3. Mark the Track classes box.
  4. Then, choose how you want to assign the classes.
  5. Click Save and Done.

Now, here's how you can create a class:

  1. Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner and select All Lists.
  2. Choose Classes and click the New button.
  3. Set up the class and click Save.

You can use this article for reference, too: How to Set Up and Use Class and Location Tracking.

Where do I find the class and categories in QB online?

Hello there, @Robman.

I appreciate you for getting back to us here in the Community. I can provide some clarification about the categories in QuickBooks Online.

You can use the class tracking feature to categorize products and services from your transactions. I recommend selecting the One to each row in transaction option to add a category to each line.

Please see screenshots below for your visual guide:

I've also attached an article you can use to classify your products and services, as well as some information about class tracking:

Fill me in if you have additional questions about using QBO. I'm always here to help. Take care always.

dude you are missing it completely.

There is a feature in QBO called product categories. It was not there in QB Desktop. It allows you to assign items to a category (like subitems on QB Desktop).

This a very useful feature.

I am unable to turn it on in one company - totally stumped. If someone knows the answer how to turn it on to enable grouping into categories please let us know

Appreciate your prompt response, Robman.

Let me guide you on how to group product and services items into categories to keep things ordered.

You can create and use a category to group items of the same type. However, if you'd like to be more precise, then create sub-categories.

Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. In the left menu, click Sales
  2. Go to the Products and Services tab.
  3. Tap the dropdown More ▼, then select Manage categories.
  4. Choose New category and enter the name of the category. If needed to create a sub-category, pick Is a sub-category checkbox and the main category.
  5. Hit Save when done.

In this feature, you also have an option to pick a category when adding a new inventory productservice, or non-inventory product as well as adding an existing product or service to a category.

To learn more about this process, read this resource: Group your products and services into different categories.

Your answer is correct and if the thing is working it would be applicable... but as it stands it is not helpful.

So for all of you out there that CANNOT ACCESS THE CATEGORIES OPTION:

I have just dealt with Support and we cannot get it fixed. But, there are some new steps along the way that might help you:

in the url (using Google Chrome browser) edit the current page location... to go to categories page. it will look like this: "…qbo.intuit.com/app/categories". that will take you to a page that invites you to switch to using categories. This is supposed to work then...but it didn't for me.
I also created a new admin user and logged in with them. They actually had a pop-up to activate it, but it didn't work either.

I will follow up this post with the eventual cause of the problem and solution once we have it.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, Rob - PRSM.

I appreciate you working with our Customer Care Team on this and trying their suggested troubleshooting steps. As mentioned by Rustler and my colleague, JamesDuanT, the categories feature is only available with a QuickBooks Online Plus subscription. If you're using any other plan, it won't be an accessible option.

Here's how to check your account and upgrade it:
1. Use your Gear (⚙️) icon, then go to Account and settings.
2. Open the Billing Subscription tab.
3. In your QuickBooks Online tile, select Upgrade your plan.
4. If you'd like to upgrade, choose a new plan. The one you're currently subscribed to won't be displayed.

If our Plus subscription wasn't being used previously and you've now switched to it, you can follow the steps provided by JamesDuanT to get started with class tracking.

You'll also be able to find many resources about using QBO in our help article archives.

If there's anything else I can help with, feel more than welcome to reach out anytime. Have a great Friday!

Where do I find the class and categories in QB online?

ZackE - your post is yet another display of you guys giving an answer because you feel you must, using much more words and discussion than is needed too, without adding any valuable solution to the matter, with the result that you only confuse the matter and make it hard for people seeking solutions to find them. My opinion!

Thank you for the link to the Categories page. I also tried to switch to categories, and it failed. The page leads you to think that it will change all of your parents to categories and set all your sub-products to those categories. It does not do that. I turned off sub-product for every product - don't forget inactive products. It finally worked. Now I have to go back and assign my products to categories.

Where do I find the class and categories in QB online?

I should have the "Manage Categories" as an option when I hit the "More" button and I do not.

I have tried the hyperlink as well as everything else stated above, and it did not work. I transferred from desktop to QBO and I have been told that may be the issue, but it appears that this has been going on for 3 years and no one has an answer. I am paying for this feature, and I would expect someone to be making it a priority. I have another company that I started straight from QuickBooks Online and that option is available.

Where do I find the class and categories in QB online?

Good morning, @samra areej

Thanks for joining in on this thread.

The best route would be to consult with your accountant to be sure on how to categorize this. They'll be able to give you accounting advice based on how your business is ran.

You can review the other guides listed on this thread in the above responses to get more details about categories.

I'm only a post away if you need me. Have a wonderful day!
