How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

I use ALLDATA and I'm getting this error - You have automated sales tax calculations enabled for your Quickbooks account. This means that QuickBooks will ignore tax information exported by ALLDATA Manage Online and apply its own tax calculations. If you proceed with the export, you will be responsible for any data export issues.

It has correctly imported the invoices showing an open balance on the invoices, but it's not correct. How do I fix this?

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Welcome to the Community, germanprecisionn.

I have the information you need to import invoices with the correct tax information in QuickBooks Online.

Since you've automated sales tax turned on, QuickBooks will override the tax information from your imported invoices. Hence, you can turn off this feature to import transactions with the correct tax details.

Beforehand, you need to delete transactions with sales tax and the invoices you've just imported to avoid duplicates when uploading them again.

After that, you can proceed to these steps to turn off automated sales tax:

  1. Head to Taxes, then choose Sales tax.
  2. Select Sales Tax Settings, then Turn off sales tax.
  3. Confirm the action by clicking Yes.

Moreover, once customers pay their invoices, you can either receive payments manually or let them pay online through credit card, PayPal, Venmo, and ACH transfer.

Keep us posted in this forum if you require further assistance importing invoices or other related concerns in QuickBooks Online. We'll be around to help.

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Are you saying that I have to delete ALL my invoices with sales tax? that goes back to 2016, so that's a hard no. I just need to turn off automated sales tax (I never selected that option) so that I can import my invoices as I did before with no problem

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

My customers and invoicing is done through ALLDATA, so I have to receive the payments manually.

I didn't select the automatic sales tax option, it just appeared, and now I cannot import the invoices properly.

Are you saying that I have to delete ALL my invoices with sales tax on them and then import them again, because that's going to be a hard NO, as my invoices go back to 2016. I just need it to go back to the way it was before y'all added the sales tax option. How do I do that?

My colleague provided the steps to turn off sales tax automation in QuickBooks Online, @germanprecisionn. However, you can check for third-party software that can assist you in deleting sales taxes in bulk.

You can check our QuickBooks App Center. Another option is to go to your QBO account's Apps menu.

Here's how:

  1. From the sidebar menu, choose Apps.
  2. To find apps, go to the Find Apps tab.
  3. To filter the results, type a keyword into the search bar or click the Browse category option.

I would also recommend consulting your accountant and asking for assistance if they have a faster way of deleting sales taxes for previous invoices in QuickBooks Online. If you don't have one, here is a link you can click: Find an accountant.

Please know that you can manage your sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online. Here is an article to guide you with the steps: Manage sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Did you figure this out? I'm having the SAME problem. Deleting all invoices with sales tax is NOT an option. I still need to track it,but everything is so messed up now. This automated sales tax just appeared and it has added agencies and all kinds of stupid things. I called qbo and they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. As if they haven't recently changed the sales tax center. Is there not a way to go back to the old version?

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

I see you're having trouble with QuickBooks Online's automated sales tax feature. I'm here to help clear some confusion and guide you through resolving this matter.

You don't have to worry if you have to delete these invoices to turn off the sales tax feature because there is still a way to re-enter the invoices using the audit log feature in QuickBooks Online.

After successfully turning off sales tax in your account, you can re-enter your deleted transactions using the audit log. You can also batch-upload multiple invoices at once. This way, you can still track these invoices efficiently.

Here's how to locate and re-enter deleted transaction(s):

  1. Go to Settings and select Audit Log.
  2. Choose the appropriate user, date, and event(s) from the Filter ▼ dropdown menu and click Apply.
  3. Locate the deleted transaction.
  4. Under the History column, select View.
  5. All the information needed for the transaction can be found under the Event column.
  6. Using the information from the Audit log, you can re-enter the transaction with its original transaction date.

On the other hand, starting May 6, 2024, the new interface with a modern design will permanently replace the old layout. Users will not have the option to switch back to the previous experience. With that, let me provide these articles to help manage your invoices efficiently in QuickBooks Online:

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Nope! It's absolutely ridiculous. My books are closed from 2016 to 2023. I have to go in and manually delete and re-enter the invoices from 2016? What were they thinking when they added this feature?!?!?

Number one thing in accounting is don't open your closed books unless your accountant advises to. I shouldn't have to do this to "fix" a feature that I neither need nor want that QB turned on. Surely there's a better way.

deleting all of the invoices with sales tax did not fix the issue. I still cannot turn off sales tax. It's still telling me I have invoices with tax on them, and i don't.

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Well, I've found a work-around for the sales tax problem. It's way more work than it should take to get around such a poorly thought out "feature", but for now......

If you go to the sales tax center, then click on a report with the dates you desire. When that window opens, you'll see the different tax agencies listed (the ones you set up AND the ones that this auto feature has created). Click on the "see report" on the line for the agency you want to remove from your invoices. For example, the auto feature adds different county and city tax agencies that we don't pay (because it thinks we're shipping things, and we don't ). So, click on see report. Then, click on an invoice in the list, click on "see the math", then change Auto sales tax to the tax that you want it to be. and save. You have to do that with all invoices that have incorrect sales tax calculated by this auto feature.

Huge pain in the rear! but if you really need to get your taxable income amount correct for filing your sales tax reports with whatever agency this will do it. Hopefully, quickbooks will SOON FIX THIS UNNECESSARY PROBLEM

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

Hi there, germanprecisionn. I can help you troubleshoot your QuickBooks online to ensure you can turn off your sales tax.

You can generate a report to ensure you've deleted all your taxable transactions.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Search for Taxable Sales Detail in the search bar.
  3. Click the report.
  4. Under the Report period, select All dates.
  5. You can run both Accrual and Cash to ensure that everything is deleted.
  6. Click Run report. If the data is blank for cash and Accrual, it's all deleted.

I've also added a screenshot for your visual reference.

After confirming, proceed in troubleshooting your QBO account. Sometimes, cache-related issues can cause QuickBooks Online (QBO) to load incorrectly. As a result, this has caused the sales tax not turning off.

Here are some steps that can resolve unexpected results in QBO:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If this resolves the issue, return to your regular browser and clear your browsing history to start fresh. If not, you can use a different supported browser.

In addition, you can refer to these articles to learn how to edit and manage your sales tax payment in QBO:

How do I turn off automatic sales tax?

I support germanprecision this is not an answer.  It is absurd and a risk to the integrity of one's books and taxable income, prior periods of paid and collected sales tax and to have to rebuild an invoice data base manually or a bulk transfer will open up all sorts of new issues.  Not an answer and evidently did not work.  This is a huge problem and I would expect a better answer and response from Quickbooks.  This has only been a problem in the last couple of months, so someone with Quickbooks needs to find answer for its users and correct.
