I do not want a password

My computer crashed and I had to reload program. Now I am being asked for a password.  I am the administrator and the only one who uses this program.  I do not want a password but cannot figure how to make it stop asking me for one.

I set one up when I initially reloaded to get the program to let me proceed.  I now wish to do away with the program password.

Basically, you can't remove the password.

See link below & see if it helps.

I do not want a password

Intuit and its insanely moronic program Quickbooks once again goes the extra mile to infuriate me.  I don't want a password.  Why can't you understand that we are busy and have a thousand and one things to do besides create passwords much less remember them for each different client we have.  Why can't there be a work around.  Intuit is worse than working with the government.

I do not want a password

I use QB on my computer and have multiple company books to manage (I am not an accountant). No one else has access to my computer.

I am also a computer security expert (10+ years in field) and a software developer. I find it preposterous that Intuit has taken a security decision out of my hands. Sure, provide the ability for an administrator to require a password for all users.

However, password requirements ARE A POLICY DECISION and should not be baked into the application. I know the security of my setup better than Intuit. Adding this password step to my daily process does not in any way protect the security of my financial data.

Unfortunately, I will continue to not upgrade or accept patches because of Intuit's flawed development philosophy.

First off, your link doesn't go anywhere. It goes to a page that states "Sorry! The content you are looking for is no longer available. "
I just bought Quickbooks 2019, upgrading from a prior version.
I have 12 small companies/people I keep the books for.
I do not communicate with Intuit. I do not store credit cards. I do not store SSNs, since ADP does our payroll.
I don't want passwords.
I have been using QuickBooks for umpteen years without passwords.
It looks like passwords have to be changed every 90 days also.
What a waste of human resources to require this in my situation.
I will use the new QuickBooks for a while, but I will likely return it within 60 days and revert to the older version.
Will also make my thoughts known to the Amazon database.
Thereafter will check out the other small business accounting programs on the market.

Welcome and thank you for joining the thread, @Disappointed loyal user.

I'm here to share some information about password security in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

For the security of your critical data, QBDT requires passwords for data files to meet certain complexity requirements. Passwords required/must be changed every 90 days. QuickBooks prompts you to change your password near the end of the 90 days as well as on the expiration date itself.

You'll be asked to change the password if you have Personally Identifiable Information (PII) entered to your company. This includes the employee and a company social security number, company EIN, company bank details (routing number, account number), or vendor tax ID.

The only way to stop the password protection is to remove this information from the company file. However, this won't be the smart thing to do. If you think the option of removing the password is what you need for your business, I suggest sending this idea straight to our product developers/engineers.

To send your product feedback/suggestions:

  1. Go to Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Choose Send Feedback Online.
  3. Select Product Suggestion.
  4. Enter your product request/product suggestion.
  5. Click Send Feedback tab.

You can check this article for additional reference: Password security for QuickBooks Desktop.

Stay in touch if you have any other password concerns. Have a good day!

I do not want a password

I have spent literal hours wrestling with passwords.  When on the phone with support, I had to try to change my PW seven or eight times (try coming up with all those PWs) and it turns out the problem was I had two logins, which no one could discern on the support side.

Now I have three open "companies"--2017, 2018, and 2019.  (Because of the mess of going from QBMac to QBOnline to NewQBMac to QBW because my accountant finally insisted, I have my fiscal years separate for the time being.)  Now, I can't tell which password is for what.  Is the Administrator PW different from Company passwords?  No matter what, the app opens demanding a password without specifying which company.  All three PWs I had worked, now they don't.  I can't afford another day on the phone with hapless support people halfway around the world.  UGH.

Hi there, avocats,

Let me get the help you need in opening a company file.

To help us further isolate the issue, we can try suppressing your QuickBooks. Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon.
  2. Press and hold the Ctrl key and click Open.
  3. Hold the Ctrl key until you have the No Company Open window.

Once done, try to log back in and check if you still encounter the same challenges.

Please let me know how it works. Have a great day!

Absolutely, getting to that point myself.  Frankly going to start shopping for other accounting software.  Handle one business with very basic transactions.  Freaking ridiculous. Thanks you articulated my very same feelings.

I have been using QBooks since the first few releases. I use to like the product, HOWEVER the use of a password should be MY CHOICE .. NOT YOURS. Plain and simple. You provide the tools and we provide the data and the user action.

I have asked about this from the day this stupid option was forced on me and all I was told was take it or leave it. If I didn't have so many years of company history in QBooks I would leave.

I have mentioned to others about this issue and strongly recommend they look around.

Hello there, jaime1107 and TJBLANEY.

Thank you for the feedback. Allow me to join in and share some more insights.

Right now, the option to set QuickBooks to automatically log in without your login credentials is unavailable. This is implemented as an extra security layer within your QuickBooks files.

We definitely understand where you and our other business customers are coming from. Having this option available would definitely be a nice plus. I'll send my own feedback on your behalf, so they’ll know a lot of customers wants this feature available soon.

Thank you for reaching out to us here, and please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

What a waste of money and time. The converter won't convert my PC files correctly, it keeps creating them as Mac files.

The program insists on going online when I do not want my information anywhere but on my PC.

And it is a frustratingly password protected when my PC is already password protected.

Anyone have ideas for non-Intuit money management software that will read old Quicken files?

Thanks looping in this thread, SFK.

Let me help you with convert data file into QuickBooks Desktop.

Before you can convert your old Quicken files, you can use the Quicken Converter to upgrade your file first.

  1. Download the version of converter tool that matches the year version of your QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Install and convert.
    1. Launch the downloaded Quicken Converter, then choose Next.
    2. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, then choose Next.
    3. To start the installation of the Quicken Converter, select Next, then Install.
    4. Select Launch Quicken Converter, then Finish.
    5. Choose I am transferring data from Quicken for Windows, then select Get Started.
    6. Select Open a data file located on this computer, then Select File.
    7. Browse to select your Quicken file (.QDF) file and select OK.
    8. Select Convert it!, then select OK.
    9. To save your new Quicken Data File (.QDF) file, select Save, then select Exit.

Once your file is upgraded to a compatible version of Quicken, you can now start converting using the Conversion Utility in QuickBooks.

Convert your Quicken file using the Conversion Utility in QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. To do this, go to File Utilities Convert, then choose From Quicken.
  2. Select the Quicken file (.QDF) that you want to convert.
  3. The Conversion Utility will guide you through the rest of the conversion.

Thanks, I figured it out after I posted. Frustrating. Conversion of all the names is ongoing. This is my boss's program and he couldn't figure out all the details.

Question, once I fix all of the errors in the database, if I back it up, can I just send him the backup for him to upload without anymore conversions?

I’m happy to see you in the Intuit Community, SFK.

Allow me to chime and provide additional information about backing up and viewing of company file.

After the conversion process, you can back up the company data using a flash drive. Before restoring the file, make sure your boss is using the same QuickBooks version.

A company file can't be opened in another QuickBooks Desktop version. For more information about the limitations, check out this article: Company file compatibility.

If it meets the requirements, let’s go ahead and restore data. Let me provide you the step by step process.

  1. Go to QuickBooks, then choose Preferences.
  2. Select Backup, then double click the .dmg file.
  3. Drag the company file ((.qbXXXX file extension) to the folder where you want to store it .
  4. Drag the Attached Documents Library folder to the location where you store the QuickBooks company file.
  5. Click on the copy of the file.
  6. Go to File at the top menu bar, then choose Open Company.
  7. Select the .qbb file, then click Open.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Enter a name for the restored file, and then click Save.

Here’s an article that will visually you through the process: Restore a backup (.dmg) in QuickBooks Mac.

The steps I provided should get you pointed in the right direction restoring the file.

If you have additional questions about QuickBooks, please post a comment below. I’ll be right here to answer them. Have a great weekend ahead.

Hello there, @dskurth.

I appreciate your time voicing out your feedback with regard to your experience. Let me chime and provide you with additional information on the importance of password security in QuickBooks Desktop software.

I understand it can get frustrating to keep entering your login credentials at repeated occurrences.

The password security when accessing a company file in QuickBooks is an extra layer of security that is implemented in all Intuit products, not just with QuickBooks. This way, your data gets protected as well as your customers’ and employees’ information recorded in QuickBooks.

On the other hand, if you’re trying to import your data to TurboTax Business, you may check out this article: How do I import QuickBooks data into TurboTax Business?

Please don’t hesitate to visit us here in the Community if you have other questions about password security for QuickBooks Desktop. I’m always here to answer your inquiries.

Not true. Intuit's Turbo Tax does not use passwords - - fortunately - - even though it stores SSNs and all sorts of other confidential information. Somehow the world has not ended for the lack of passwords with that program.

Hi there, @Truth_Above_All.

Thanks for joining into this conversation. Allow me to share some clarifications about the password security in QuickBooks Desktop.

QuickBooks Desktop requires passwords when opening your company file as part of the continuing commitment to protect you and your customers’ information, our most recent QuickBooks Desktop update is designed to secure sensitive data including credit card data and personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security Numbers and other employer and employee identification numbers.

That said, all users who have the Credit Card Protection feature on, or whose QuickBooks Desktop file contains sensitive data such as credit card data or PII will be asked to set up a password to verify that the person attempting to access the account is authorized to view such data.

QuickBooks detects the presence of the following data and ensures strong control:

  • Employee and Employer Social Security Number
  • Employer EIN
  • Employer Bank Details (Routing Number, Account Number)
  • Vendor Tax ID

You can find out more about our security update here http://intuit.me/AN13707To learn more about what Intuit does to keep your data safe at http://security.intuit.com/.

Also, TurboTax has the option to set up a password when accessing your account

Lastly, I'd encourage you to visit the What's New feature of your QuickBooks Desktop to be updated with our latest news and updates including product improvements that would be beneficial for you and your business.

To do that:

  1. Click on Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Select on New Features.
  3. Choose What's New.

This information should get you going today.

You still don't get it.  All this justifications and such.  It is up to US, the user, to decide what is necessary and what is not.  It is not for you to say and decide.

Hi @dskurth,

We don't intend to decide for you when it comes to your account preferences. But the mandatory access setting was put to make sure that no one else can access your file but only you.

Since your company file contains sensitive information, such as your bank information, it is crucial to require a password. The password security is an extra measure to keep your account protected and secured.

I personally understand how frustrating this can be. But don't worry, I'll be passing this along to our engineers so they'd know your sentiments.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns.
