QuickBooks Pro 2019 Desktop Updates

My QuickBooks 2019 Pro Desktop is set up for automatic updates but I keep getting notices when I open the program that updates are available and asking if I want to install them.  Isn't the whole point of automatic updates to avoid this?

No. You're always asked if you want to install the updates.

Thanks.  But will the update install automatically since I'm set up for it if I ignore the update messages?  I set up auto updates thinking I would avoid the manual method but it sounds like that's not the case.  Maybe I'm missing something.

Hi there, @jam11.

Thanks for reaching out to us for your concern. I can help check why your getting an update notices when opening QuickBooks.

QuickBooks should be automatically downloading the update when it is released since you configure the program to this feature. Now, you have one option to check why you're still prompt to update.

This can be a one time messages and may be disabled through Preferences.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit tab.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. In the General tab, click My Preferences.
  4. See if the Bring back all one time messages feature is enabled. If so, you may unchecked the box and see if you'll still encounter the same thing.

This information should help you disabled the update reminder. Let me know how things go after following the steps above. If you have other questions aside from this, just leave a reply below. I'd be glad to answer.

We updated to 2019 yesterday. It is extremely slow! It take a minimum of 10-20 seconds, after clicking anything, for it to respond. Never had this issue with previous versions. Is this a glitch that will be fixed/addressed asap?

QuickBooks Pro 2019 Desktop Updates

Hello, @kelenburg.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Let me help determine why you're Desktop version is having this kind of issue.

There are possible factors that can affect the performance of QuickBooks. Below are the most common reasons:

  • Your data file may be larger and your software would need more resources to work with.
  • If your computer doesn't meet the system requirements.
  • A competing program is running at the same time QuickBooks is running.
  • Your Network interface card (NIC) settings can slow the transfer rate.

Since you've already updated your QuickBooks version to the latest release, I'd suggest trying out the troubleshooting steps provided in this article: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.

This will get you on the right track. As always, you can contact our Desktop Care Support if you need assistance in going through the steps. Here's how to get their contact information:

  1. Go to: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Choose your QuickBooks Product.
  3. Select your QuickBooks Version.
  4. On the Contact Us page, click a topic.
  5. Click on the Get Phone Number button to see the support number.

Please feel free to ask if you have other questions about any issues or error you encounter in QuickBooks. I'm here to help.

Same issue!!  I had Geek Squad check  my computer and they said it’s the QuickBooks program. I have nothing but problems after I updated to the 2019 version

Thanks for joining this thread, @wgilliamRN72

I'll share some steps to help speed the performance of your QuickBooks Desktop.

Just to confirm, did you already perform the steps outlined in the article provided by @Anonymous above? If not, I suggest you to do so.

First, please make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements to run the program. The program's performance decreases as the size of the company file increases.

If you have a large file and still experiencing performance issues, you can reduce your file's overall size by using the Condense Data utility. You'll first need to create a backup of your company file since the steps below are irreversible.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu at the top.
  2. Select Utilities
  3. Choose Condense Data
  4. Select the first option during the condense process. Note that the system will advise you of the approximate reduction in your file.
  5. Click Next. The Working on your file now window will appear.
  6. Click Close once the process is complete.

If the first option doesn't work, you can perform the other solutions through this article: Fix QuickBooks Desktop Performance Issues

Stay in touch with me how things go after performing the steps above, @wgilliamRN72

Please drop me a line below if there's anything else you need. I'll gladly help.

If you click "NO", it closes down QB.  So you're not really given an option.

Hi @lmuetzel,

Let me get into the thread to assist you on the issue you encounter.

Would like to verify if you have followed what my colleagues suggested as a fix.

If you did, please repair your QuickBooks desktop to make sure that there are no file corruptions on your software.

For Windows 7 here's how:

  • Open Control Panel and clicl/tap on Programs and Features.
  • Select QuickBooks desktop.
  • Click on Repair above the list of program.
  • Choose Repair or Change/Repair.
  • continue until you finish the repair process, and select Finish.

Once steps above is done, please restart your computer.

That will make sure that there are no issue on the Quickbooks file.

For further assistance I would suggest to contact our Tech Support team.

I'd like to clarify.... I work for a CPA. Every time I go to access EVERY client's file, I'm asked to update the company file (see pic attached). I have automatic updates turned on. If I answer "No", it closes QB. This is very time consuming. I'd like to update once and have it affect all clients' files.

Hi there, @lmuetzel.

I appreciate you for providing me with that clarification. The option to update the clients' files all at once isn't available. You need to install the latest release to each company file.

Additionally, you can see this prompt if the update is not complete. Thus, you need to download the release manually, then install it to update the file. Make sure you're in single user mode, and the file is not over the network.

Since the automatic update is set up in each client's file, you can also turn off the pop-ups in QuickBooks. This way you won't see the notification once the new release is available.

Here's how:

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. From the Preferences window, select General on the left column
  3. Go to the My Preferences tab.
  4. Check the box next to Turn off pop-up messages for products and services
  5. Click OK.

I DO have automatic updates turned on in each file. (see pic) Are you saying that I will have to "click yes" to update every file I open (even though auto update IS turned on), then go and turn off pop-ups, and this will supposedly do away with the update notification I receive every time I open a file? It never used to be like this. I don't get having to jump through all these hoops.

@lmuetzel

"Automatic Update" is and option to update the QuickBooks application with patches.

Sometimes mid-year, the updated patch needs to update your company file.  This is the message you're seeing.  Answer yes and then the updated QB will update your company file - one time for each file.

Actually I have to answer "yes" and update the same files over and over again. I may have been in the file last week, running payroll, I open it the next week, it makes me update again. If I'm going in again within just a few days, there's no popup. But over a week or two, time to update again, even though auto update is on, and I just did it last time I went in. Could this have anything to do with firewall settings? Virus protection? Desperately seeking answers, because this is ridiculous. It wasn't like this until just a couple months ago, and I don't know what's changed.

Hey @lmuetzel,

You can try running the Verify & Rebuild Data utilities in QuickBooks. Let me discuss this further and guide you how.

Running these data utilities allows you to identify errors in your company file which causes these notifications to update.

You can follow the steps below in running the data utilities:

  1. To Verify Data:
    1. Click on File from the menu bar.
    2. Choose Utilities, then click on Verify Data.
    3. If you see QuickBooks detected no problem with your data, select OK.
    4. If Verify finds an issue with your data, you will be prompted to Rebuild Now or View Errors.
  2. To Rebuild Data:
    1. Click on File from the menu bar.
    2. Choose Utilities, then click on Rebuild Data.
    3. On the QuickBooks Information window, select OK.
    4. If your screen displays QuickBooks is not responding but your cursor is moving, Rebuild is still ongoing.
    5. Select OK when you see Rebuild has completed.

Once done, you can update again your company file in Single-user Mode.

You can refer to this article for more information: Resolve Data Damage on Your Company File.

Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any other concerns. I’ll be here to help you.

Good to see you here in the Community, @Mibanco1527,

I appreciate your efforts in performing the steps provided by my colleagues. Allow me to guide you to get the correct support to get this addressed as soon as possible.

QuickBooks should automatically download the update when it is released. However since you keep getting notices, I suggest disabling  the reminder through Preferences.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit tab.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. In the General tab, click My Preferences.
  4. See if the Bring back all one time messages feature is enabled. If so, you may unchecked the box and see if you'll still encounter the same thing.

If you still get the same results, I'd recommend contacting our Desktop Chat Support. They can access your account in a secure environment and investigate the issue.

Here's how you can reach our Desktop Specialist:

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

2. Click the Help tab at the top menu bar (you can still do this without opening a company file).

3. Click QuickBooks Desktop Help or press the F1 key.

4. Click Contact Us.

If you need anything else, please post a comment. Helping you will always be my pleasure. Wishing you and your business continued success.

I accepted the free update to 2019 and my company files were converted to 2019. I had six licenses for 2018 before this happened and now only one user can be online. QB demand that i buy the additional licenses and since the host computer updated and the files were converted i can't go back without losing a weeks data.

There was no warning that this would happen and no notice of additional costs. The rep and their supervisor won't help us. I have five people not keeping up until i pay what i consider a ransom.

If this has happened to you contact me   [email address removed]
