My QuickBooks 2019 Pro Desktop is set up for automatic updates but I keep getting notices when I open the program that updates are available and asking if I want to install them. Isn't the whole point of automatic updates to avoid this?
Solved! Go to Solution.
No. You're always asked if you want to install the updates.
No. You're always asked if you want to install the updates.
Thanks. But will the update install automatically since I'm set up for it if I ignore the update messages? I set up auto updates thinking I would avoid the manual method but it sounds like that's not the case. Maybe I'm missing something.
Hi there, @jam11.
Thanks for reaching out to us for your concern. I can help check why your getting an update notices when opening QuickBooks.
QuickBooks should be automatically downloading the update when it is released since you configure the program to this feature. Now, you have one option to check why you're still prompt to update.
This can be a one time messages and may be disabled through Preferences.
Here's how:
This information should help you disabled the update reminder. Let me know how things go after following the steps above. If you have other questions aside from this, just leave a reply below. I'd be glad to answer.
We updated to 2019 yesterday. It is extremely slow! It take a minimum of 10-20 seconds, after clicking anything, for it to respond. Never had this issue with previous versions. Is this a glitch that will be fixed/addressed asap?
Hello, @kelenburg.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Let me help determine why you're Desktop version is having this kind of issue.
There are possible factors that can affect the performance of QuickBooks. Below are the most common reasons:

Same issue!! I had Geek Squad check my computer and they said it’s the QuickBooks program. I have nothing but problems after I updated to the 2019 version
Thanks for joining this thread, @wgilliamRN72.
I'll share some steps to help speed the performance of your QuickBooks Desktop.
Just to confirm, did you already perform the steps outlined in the article provided by @Anonymous above? If not, I suggest you to do so.
First, please make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements to run the program. The program's performance decreases as the size of the company file increases.
If you have a large file and still experiencing performance issues, you can reduce your file's overall size by using the Condense Data utility. You'll first need to create a backup of your company file since the steps below are irreversible.
Here's how:
If the first option doesn't work, you can perform the other solutions through this article: Fix QuickBooks Desktop Performance Issues.
Stay in touch with me how things go after performing the steps above, @wgilliamRN72.
Please drop me a line below if there's anything else you need. I'll gladly help.
If you click "NO", it closes down QB. So you're not really given an option.
Hi @lmuetzel,
Let me get into the thread to assist you on the issue you encounter.
Would like to verify if you have followed what my colleagues suggested as a fix.
If you did, please repair your QuickBooks desktop to make sure that there are no file corruptions on your software.
For Windows 7 here's how:
Once steps above is done, please restart your computer.
That will make sure that there are no issue on the Quickbooks file.
For further assistance I would suggest to contact our Tech Support team.
Hi there, @lmuetzel.
I appreciate you for providing me with that clarification. The option to update the clients' files all at once isn't available. You need to install the latest release to each company file.
Additionally, you can see this prompt if the update is not complete. Thus, you need to download the release manually, then install it to update the file. Make sure you're in single user mode, and the file is not over the network.
Since the automatic update is set up in each client's file, you can also turn off the pop-ups in QuickBooks. This way you won't see the notification once the new release is available.
Here's how:
For additional reference, the following article contains information about the recent changes, improvements, and fixes for you product: Latest release available for QuickBooks Desktop 2019.

Let me know if you have further questions. I'll be happy to help you out.
"Automatic Update" is and option to update the QuickBooks application with patches.
Sometimes mid-year, the updated patch needs to update your company file. This is the message you're seeing. Answer yes and then the updated QB will update your company file - one time for each file.
Hey @lmuetzel,
You can try running the Verify & Rebuild Data utilities in QuickBooks. Let me discuss this further and guide you how.
Running these data utilities allows you to identify errors in your company file which causes these notifications to update.
You can follow the steps below in running the data utilities:
Once done, you can update again your company file in Single-user Mode.

QuickBooks should automatically download the update when it is released. However since you keep getting notices, I suggest disabling the reminder through Preferences.
Here's how:

I accepted the free update to 2019 and my company files were converted to 2019. I had six licenses for 2018 before this happened and now only one user can be online. QB demand that i buy the additional licenses and since the host computer updated and the files were converted i can't go back without losing a weeks data.
There was no warning that this would happen and no notice of additional costs. The rep and their supervisor won't help us. I have five people not keeping up until i pay what i consider a ransom.
If this has happened to you contact me [email address removed]
it didn't give me an option but when it did i lost the additional 5 licenses i had paid for for 2018
When i allowed the update to 2019 it only update d with one license and QB demands i buy the other five licenses i paid for with 2018
Thank you for providing details about your concern, @GuyfromMontana.
