How can i get a report of billable and unbillable/billed expenses for a specific customer or project? Am i missing something?

I do not see "client" in my options for this report.  Is there another way to do this?

Thanks for joining the thread, LizCBayer.

Just to make sure that I'm on the same page, do you mean that the Client box on the Transaction Lists with splits is unavailable? If so, let's try some troubleshooting steps that can help us isolate this.

Let's try opening your account in a private (incognito) window. Using a safe browser and accessing the program from there can usually fix the issue.

Check out these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Command + Shift + N (Safari)
  • Ctrl+ Shift + N (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox)

Once done, try to run the report again. Check if the Client box is now available. If it works, go back to your default browser and clear cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online for more information.

Otherwise, switch to a different browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. The one you are currently on may be having a temporary issue with QuickBooks, and using a new browser for the moment will allow you to get back to work.

On the other hand, if you’re referring to something else, let me know so I can provide the most accurate resolution.

How can i get a report of billable and unbillable/billed expenses for a specific customer or project? Am i missing something?

I mean it doesn't exist as an option for me to select in the "gear" area.  I was able to select the "billable" box but there is NO CLIENT OPTION to select.  Going in cognito is not going to change that.

I'm here to ensure you're able to customize your report showing the data you needed, @LizCBayer.

Customizing your report from the small gear icon only allows you to add or remove a certain column. Since you wanted to filter it with the client's name, let's customize your report from the general customization instead. I'll show you how.

  1. Go to Reports.
  2. Enter Transaction List with Splits in the Search address.
  3. Open the suggested report.
  4. Select Customize.
  5. Under Filter, select Name.
  6. On the selection, choose the name of your client.
  7. Click Run report.

For more details on how you're able to customize a report, check out this article for information: How to Get the Most out of your Financial Reports?

I'm also adding this reference for the steps in saving your preference to access reports easily in the future: Memorizing a Report to Save it with its Current Customization Settings.

Don't hesitate to post again here if you have other questions about customizing your reports. I'm always around happy to help. Take care and stay safe!

How can i get a report of billable and unbillable/billed expenses for a specific customer or project? Am i missing something?

I did that and it clears out all my information. It does not recognize what I want.
We do not have "clients"; we have customers.  I cannot find an option that will allow me to filter this report by customers.

I can imagine the hurdle you've been through in customizing the transaction report, @LizCBayer.

I'll help you filter the report by customers name.

After running the report, you'll have to go to the settings and change the columns from there. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. On the Search field, enter Transaction List with Split.
  3. Open the report.
  4. From the report, select the Gear/Settings icon.
  5. Check the Customers box.
  6. Hit Save customization.

How can i get a report of billable and unbillable/billed expenses for a specific customer or project? Am i missing something?

Thanks for the suggestion. I already have "customer" selected.  It will show the customers but I cannot sort on customers.  Also, when I try to filter so that it only shows certain customers the entire report ends up completely blank.  For some reason it won't allow what I'm trying to do.

How can i get a report of billable and unbillable/billed expenses for a specific customer or project? Am i missing something?

Hey there, LizCBayer.

Thanks for following the solution shared by my peer and sharing the result. I’m here to make sure you’ll see the sorted customers’ names on the report.

We’ll have to open the report to determine where the issue is stemming from. This process requires us to access your company. For safety purposes, we’ll have to connect you to our QuickBooks Online (QBO) Support Team. They can perform a thorough investigation about the issue and then guide you on how to apply the permanent solution.

Here’s how:

  1. Press the Help icon at the top to open the QB Assistant window.
  2. In the Assistant tab, scroll down to the Type something field to enter the issue. For example, customizing reports.
  3. Click the Get help from a human link and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process.
  4. In How would you like to connect with us? section, choose Chat for real-time assistance or Callback to speak with an agent.

Seriously, I've been on with Intuit customer service for over 2 hours now and we cannot get this figured out! Even the rep I'm speaking with is frustrated by it.

QBO should be able to do all of the reports the desktop version has. This report is so simple, yet it's been over a year and a half since the first post about it and you still haven't implemented it?

Hi, @Zamman.

I appreciate you joining this conversation. Allow me to jump in and help make sure this is taken care of for you.

You can pull up the Unbilled Costs by Job report in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). This will show you the billed and unbilled expenses by the clients.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu at the top.
  2. Proceed to Jobs, Time & Mileage.
  3. Select Unbilled Costs by Job

If this is not the report that you're looking for, I suggest sending feedback directly to our product developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QuickBooks.

Here's how to submit:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online.
  2. Tick the Product Suggestion from the dropdown menu.
  3. Fill out the on-screen instructions in the QuickBooks Feedback window.
  4. After that, click Send Feedback.

In case you need it, I'll add this article that tackles managing and customizing reports in QBDT: Customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop.

You may also visit our website for more tips and other resources you can use in the future: QBDT self-help articles.

Please post again or leave a comment if you have more questions about reports or anything else. I'm always here to answer them. Keep safe and have a good one.

Search Balance sheet. Click on Construction in Progress. Then customize for one customer. This will list all transactions where the box is not checked and ones that are checked.

What is the point of sending feedback on this when clearly qb never does what the users ask?  Make a report so people can pull the data- just like desktop? SIMPLE

this actually does not do what the op asked for - nor what any other person has stated- it does not pull a report for billed expenses to a customer - sorry you have no clue what you are talking about.  Maybe use your reading tokens again- they asked for a billed expenses report-  ironically the software I actually use to bill my client's- why? because it does what quick books won't - makes easy reports, tracks time and expenses easily, does all the invoices super easy and best of all super user friendly- it just doesn't do accounting...so I use both- but what sucks is- while I can easily pull a report there with a few clicks to produce a report to show me all expenses billed to a client - I have to spend hours matching the data in qbo because there is no report to show build expenses to a single client.  I searched the help- and have discovered people pulling their hair out to ask and re-ask how to build this report-going back YEARS! YEARS!  WHY YEARS!?  that is ridiculous...I say this every time I make a comment- make online identical to desktop- learn from microsoft!  Office desktop birthed office 365!  like for like! then build from there...and LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!

My brilliant assistant helped me get what I needed after hours of screaming and cursing at Quickbooks. It isn't perfect, but it pulled everything I needed. Maybe it will help you as well.

Hit the MAGNIFYING GLASS at the top right of the page. Type your CUSTOMER NAME in the search bar. When the page opens, adjust the search fields to find what you are looking for. I used the search "bills" then selected "customers" and "contains or equal" and then entered my keyword, which is the customer name. After that, I searched "expenses" the same way.

Doing it this way pulls everything that is associated with that customer name which is good enough for me after wasting too much time! I hope this helps! Good luck!

Roger,

Go to reports and in the find box type "time activities by customer detail".  This report will show you billable yes, billable no items.
