How to stop QB from requiring a password change every 90days QB 2019

RE: How to stop QB from requiring a password change every 90 days.

I don't know of a way to stop it, but you can easily defeat it (which of course makes it a stupid thing for Intuit to have added to QuickBooks.)

QuickBooks remembers the last 5 passwords you used (or their hash value or something.)  So, to continue using the same password you want to use, all you have to do is change the password five times and then you can change it back to the desired password.

To do this, pick Company | Change Your Password from the QuickBooks menu and then enter a new password. Repeat 4 more times, each time entering a new password, and then once more to re-enter your fave password.

I do this by entering an easy password with a sequence number. For example, QuickBooks will accept the worst password ever, "Password1".  So I enter that and then repeat the process and enter "Password2" and so on until I get to "Password5" and then finally I re-enter the password I've been using, the one I want to use.

Each time you change your password in this way, QuickBooks will automatically close and then reopen the company file without input.

Note that if you're the Admin and you want to change your password (or someone else's), you can do this on the Users and Roles window when using Enterprise or the ~same window titled User List using Pro and Premier:

To get there, pick Company | Users | Set Up Users and Roles (Enterprise) or Company | Set Up Users and Passwords (Pro/Premier) to open the window. Then, to change the password, select the user and click Edit. When doing it this way, QuickBooks won't close and open the file each time, so it's faster. I use this method and it takes me about a minute to complete the process. So, four minutes a year.

How to stop QB from requiring a password change every 90days QB 2019

Hello there, jleo.

I'm here to share some information about the security on your QuickBooks Desktop file.

The Password Security in QuickBooks Desktop can't be stopped. It is designed this way to protect your critical data such as your Social Security Number, Company EIN, Bank Information (Routing Number, Account Number), or Vendor Tax ID. Changing it every 90 days helps your file to be more protected.

I've added this article for more information about the process:  Password security for QuickBooks Desktop.

How to stop QB from requiring a password change every 90days QB 2019

But now that Quickbooks is no longer supporting Internet Explorer 11, I'm very worried this is going to cause a HUGE problem on my QB Desktop 2019.

Does login use IE 11 to login? If so that would be terrible. And what if I get a new PC that won't have IE 11 on it.

I'm not going to pay $350 when I don't need QB now or in the future.

But I must keep 24 years of QB files for tax purposes and for selling my business or my real estate properties which need verification of expenses since I've owned the properties.

Please verify for me that login won't require Internet Explorer to work!!!!!!

Thank you!!!

Hi there, @moonslice2.

Yes, QuickBooks Desktop 2019 doesn't require Internet Explorer when logging into your company file.

You don't have to worry about browser requirements since the product you're using doesn't require internet access to log in. Just make sure to use the correct username and password when opening your file.

Moreover, for supported versions of QBDT such as 2021 and above, the product uses Google Chrome as a new default browser to access your Intuit account log-in.

Also, our Help articles might have something that can help you with your QuickBooks concerns, too. Just make sure that the topic is set as "QuickBooks Desktop" to browse for related posts.

I'm just a reply away if you have other questions with the QuickBooks Desktop. Just add the details of your concerns in this thread and I'll help you out.

ReymondO - It will coma as a very big surprise to users of QBDT 2019 to know that it doesn't require Internet access or a login. Have you actually read through any of this thread which is entirely a series of complaints about Intuit's requirement for users of desktop versions to log into an Intuit account in order to use the product. If your statement is based on an assumption that the desktop version could be installed on a machine that was not connected in any way to the Internet and that the software would recognize that and not require login, well, maybe in some universe there are users who have installed desktop on a machine that has no NIC and no Wi-Fi, but that's not the other 99.998% of the real world users.

Thanks for helping me ReymondO

Although QB 2019 doesn't require Internet Explorer to login every time I open quickbooks - it DOES every couple of months want me to verify my account or it won't let me login.

And that Verification does take me to a browser and require me to login to my main Intuit Account. So what happens when IE 11 no longer works - I won't be able to use quickbooks 2019 because I can't verify my Intuit account in the browser.

Hi there, moonslice2.

QuickBooks will route you to a built-in browser that replaces Internet Explorer 11 once you're required to log into your Intuit account. Check out this article to learn more about the internal browser: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm also adding this site in case you need more information about the Intuit account and why you're required to have it: Intuit account – Why now for QuickBooks Desktop?

Stay in touch with me if there's anything else you need about accessing your Intuit account. I'm always around to answer your questions.

Unfortunately - the built-in browser won't work on QuickBooks 2019 as explained in that article ...

Thanks for following up with the Community, moonslice2. I appreciate your screenshot.

You're correct, QuickBooks 2019 doesn't utilize Intuit's internal custom browser. Instead, it works with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11).

If IE11 stops working with QuickBooks because it was removed from your computer, you can reinstall it.

Here's how:

  1. From the computer's desktop screen, go to Start, then Settings.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Hit Operational features.
  4. Press View features.
  5. Type in "Internet Explorer".
  6. Choose Internet Explorer mode.
  7. Select Next, then Install.
  8. After your installation's complete, be sure to restart the computer so it can recognize your changes.

If you have any specific questions about Internet Explorer 11, I'd recommend getting in touch with Microsoft directly. You'll be able to find more information about contacting them on their website.

I've also included a detailed resource about using QuickBooks Desktop 2019 which may come in handy moving forward: Service discontinuation policy

I'll be here to help if there's any additional questions. Have a lovely day!

Thank you for trying to help.

But QB said that since IE11 is no longer being supported by QB, it may stop working properly.

Or... maybe since my QB Desktop 2019 is no longer connected to the internet, QB will no longer even try to force me to login to my Intuit Account???

I'm probably not explaining clearly what I need and don't need.

I don't want to use QuickBooks for anything past 4/30/22, the time QB 2019 stopped having access to the internet. I don't need access to updates or payroll or anything at all.

All I want to do is to be able to reference files from older years if I get audited, etc. Or if I have to return something to Costco I bought 2 years ago I need to find that older transaction.

I'm just worried that QB will still try to force me to login to my Intuit Account every so often, like it was doing before 4/30/22.

Hey, @moonslice

Thanks for joining in on this thread.

With the Intuit Account, you'll be required to sign into it every 180 days.

I'll send feedback to our Product Developers with the other details you gave so they can consider them in the future. Check out our Blog site to keep up with what's new in the system.

I'm only a post away if you need me. Have a wonderful day!

Can I do this outside of QuickBooks? Can I just go to my Edge browser and sign in manually there? Or will QB still force me to sign in every 180 days directly in QB?

And... will it still make me do this even though I'm on the old QB Desktop 2019 which no longer connects to the internet?

Thanks for getting back to us, @moonslice2.

I'll share some insights about the QuickBooks password requirement. Yes, you can access your Intuit account outside of QuickBooks and sign in from there.

About QuickBooks Desktop 2019, you can still access and view your file even if you no longer connected to online services.

More details about the discontinuation can be found here: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.

In case you're interested to upgrade to a newer version, you can check this article for details on the process: Upgrade to newer versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns concerning your file. I'll be around to help. Take care and stay safe.

I don't think that is correct. I just opened a file I hadn't used in a few years, and after it updated the file to match the QB Desktop 2019 software update - it said I had to login to my Intuit Account to continue. Instead of logging into Intuit through the popup window (which uses QB Internet Explorer 11) - I went to my browser outside of QB and logged into my Intuit account.

But... QB 2019 still wouldn't open. It was still forcing me to login to Intuit account directly through QB in that pop-up window.

So this is still a big problem. If IE 11 stops working because QB no longer supports it or if I get a new PC which won't allow install of IE 11, I'm very worried that QB 2019 Desktop will no longer function - even though supposedly QB isn't connected to the internet anymore. But of course it is connected, as it forces me login to Intuit directly through QB popup window.

Please get Intuit to revise this issue so QB doesn't try to force us to login to Intuit through QB, as that may/will stop working.

Again - I am not using QB anymore (only Quicken) but I need access to OLD files if/when I get audited, or have to return an item to a store, etc.

I appreciate you for putting your voice out and providing more details about your concern, @moonslice2. I’ve got other option you might consider to get the files you need out of QuickBooks.

I understand you want to access your files on QuickBooks Desktop 2019 which was discontinued after May 31, 2022. I also recognize how useful the files for your business.

In this case, you might need to consult your IT person or an IT professional for assistance with accessing your files.

See this article to learn more about the discontinuation: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy and upgrade information.

I'd be glad to hear back from you if you need assistance about QuickBooks. I’ll get back to help and make sure you’re taken care of. Keep safe.

1) I am an IT, and I completely understand the issues. In fact, no one has even addressed the issue I'm bringing up.

2) I went to the page you said I should look at about what has happened with QB 2019 Desktop being no longer supported.

You can see it says there "If you don't use any of the add-on services in QuickBooks Desktop 2019, your product will continue to work for you."

But this will probably not be the case, since IE 11 is no longer supported, but yet QB is apparently still going to make us login to Intuit account THROUGH QB software using IE 11.

This needs to be addressed by the QB developers so we can still access the files as guaranteed by QB.

How to stop QB from requiring a password change every 90days QB 2019

I have just wasted another hour getting signed into QB over the unwanted password issue. It tells me I have no internet connection, this is a 2012 non subscription but happens on 2 later years of QB I use. It seems that a poor internet connection means I cannot use QB even though I don't even want to be connected. Message to try again later, kept trying until it said too many attempts and have to change passwords. Then phone verifications and reposting the password on the computer. QB said it is a security law but have ignored my requests to see this supposed law.

Quickbooks DOES NOT LISTEN TO CUSTOMERS. We are very unhappy about password requirements.

Please explain what you mean by being required to sign in every 180 days. Is this just for subscription? You should not change existing programs to make them harder for customers to use. As it often takes several hours to get signed in, I am finding myself mainly turning on QB once a year for tax entries and leaving on as it is so difficult to sign in.
