Create a company file for each company - you can have as many companies as you like.

I have 3 companies on my QB for Mac. Upon switching from one company to another, QB frequently, almost always crashes. I have sent repeated reports to Intuit with no response.

We don't respond to individual crash reports. They are aggregate by crash type and then the top occurring ones are pursued for fixes. We then contact people if we need additional information to solve the crash.

Switching shouldn't crash obviously. Does it still crash if you first quit QuickBooks? Note that holding down the option key when launching QuickBooks will prevent it from defaulting to opening the last used company file.

Let me know here if that works. Either way, lets talk through what is happening here and since it is occurring so frequently for you we may be able to fix an outstanding bug. Are you on QuickBooks Mac 2015?

Duplicate the QuickBooks Mac application in the finder and then each copy can open its own company file.

I'm sorry for being so long in replying to your answer, IntuitBiscotti. I didn't know anyone had responded. Quickbooks for Mac 2014 v15.0.5 R6 is still pretty unstable. Crashes when I am doing any number of different things almost every day - seems pretty random. I have checked for updates. I rebuild the data almost every day in all three companies because of another issue. I will try quitting first then opening in the new company. I have to rebuild the data so often because after printing checks or doing some accounting like reconciling an account the balance in the account does not match the balance in Chart of Accounts. When I'm writing checks, I can see the balance go down, when I print the checks the balance goes back up as if the checks were never written (in the Chart of Accounts). So the first thing I have to do when I open a company is check to see the balances are correct. The Chart of Account balance is accessed by other functions and when it is wrong it can throw off other stuff.

Lets start with the crashes. Usually when there are crashes when interacting with the Mac file system (like switching companies) the culprit is bad third party software. In particular so called "adware" discussed here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

In particular I know Genieo crashes in this way (the instructions to remove it are at the bottom).

So, I have done everything as instructed at the link you gave. I did not have any Genieo. I don't use Safari, I use Firefox, but I did all anyway. I don't use Google, I use Duck Duck Go. Did not seem to have any malware.

Thanks - sorry that wasn't it. Try rebooting your Mac and when it restarts hold down the shift key. This disables third party extensions. Then see if the problem continues.

Beware of ONLINE version if you want multiple QB files. Apparently only one allowed per subscription. More $$$ basically. Stick with desktop version for multiple QB files.

Thanks for posting your concern here in the Community, @Anonymous.

I can help you create multiple company files in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you run more than one company, you don’t have to purchase a new copy of QuickBooks to manage each company’s finances. You have the option to create multiple company files that are entirely separate from each other.

Here’s how:
1. Open QuickBooks and click File on the top menu bar.
2. Select New Company from the drop-down list, and click Express Start.
3. Enter the new company’s name, address and contact information in the appropriate fields, and click Create Company.
4. Repeat the process to set up other companies.

To switch between companies, click File from the top menu and select Open Previous Company. Navigate to the company file that you want and click Open.

Take a look at this article for more information: Create QuickBooks Desktop Company file: Overview.

This should answer your question for today. Please post again in the Community if you have follow-up questions. I’ll be here to help. Take care and have a good one!

So can this be done by your client sending you their company file through a jump drive, drop box, etc.. and uploading their files? I can still have unlimited companies??

I can share some insights about restoring company files in QuickBooks Desktop.

Yes, there's no limitation on the number of companies you can open. I'll show you how you can restore the company files sent by your clients.

  1. Click File.
  2. Choose Open or Restore Company.
  3. On the next window, you can choose the appropriate radio-button according to the file type you're opening or restoring.
  4. Click Next and continue the prompts.

For more information, you can use this article as a reference: Restore a backup of your company file.

That should get you on the right track, Steffi. Let me know if there's anything else you need or you have additional questions. Just add a comment or mention my name. Have a wonderful day!

What is the best QB desktop product for 1 Business 1 DBA and 1 personal Account? I have QB online but I do not want to pay extra fees or don't know how to report personal expenses and income separate from my corporation profile.

I'd be glad to share some resources about provisioning access to your QuickBooks authorized users.

When you add a user, that authorized person can only access the specific company file where you add him or her. Also, the data he or she can see depends on the type of user access you've provided.

For more insights, you may check these articles: QuickBooks Desktop Users and Restrictions.

Drop a post below if you have other questions about managing your authorized user's access in QuickBooks Desktop. I'm always here to help.

I have more than one company. Can I set up multiple companies?

Can you setup multiple companies with Quickbooks Online? I have clients with multiple companies that they own and manage and QBOA support advised that we create a separate company account and login. My issue is not being able to have one login for my client to use to then be able to run reports for all the companies (P&L, BS, etc). Currently we have to run them separately and then combine them manually. A pain. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

As an attorney I don't want to be combining books and sharing bank accounts for transactions. As an accountant, I want to be able to run consolidated P&L, BS, Cash Flow., etc. any thoughts?

Hi, @teddyj19.

I'm here to help share information about setting up or creating companies in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

In QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA), if you're client's companies have the same Employer Identification Number (EIN), then you have to option to combine the companies and use the same log in. In this case, you can separate the transaction using class tracking.

On the other hand, if the companies have different EIN, then the companies have different sales tax tracking. You really have to export the reports and combine them manually.

To learn more about class tracking, you may check this article: How to set up and use class and location tracking.

Please don't hesitate to add a post/comment below if you have any other QuickBooks questions, I'll be always here to help you. Have a good one!

I can guide you on how to create multiple company files, Rosie217.

When creating multiple company files, you can add or set up a new one in QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Click File on the top menu.
  2. Choose New Company.
  3. From the EasyStep Interview window, select Start Interview.
  4. QuickBooks opens a wizard that guides you through setting up your new company. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the information for your new company file.
  5. You can export lists from your old file and import them into your new file, so you do not need to set up any lists in the wizard.

You can check out this article for more details about creating a new company file: Start a new company file.

I've got an article for your reference about creating a new company file to replace your existing company file:
