Error message: A search for bank accounts in QuickBooks has caused an error
Just after the beginning of the month, in QB Pro 2019 desktop, I go to Banking>Make Merchant Service Deposits. This downloads and records my monthly $15.95 Intuit merchant services fee into my checking account register. Have tried several times now in September and get the error message above. I do not know if the same message would appear should a client pay by credit card and I attempted to download the payment because I get paid via that method so rarely. Can anyone help?

Found the answer. Recalled that some things don't work in QB desktop unless you right click on the icon and select Run as administrator. Have never had to do that before to get my Intuit merchant services fee to download, but that fixed the problem this time.

When we run the program as administrator
the ability to open the company file from a mapped network drive disappears.
it will only allow local drives in this mode.
I still can not open Deposits or Registers with "full access" account.
Windows 10 1909 with no updates pending.
I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue, PhoenixArizona.
We received reports from customers that they’re getting an error when opening the Merchant Service Deposit window. Our engineers are all hands on deck getting this feature working back to normal.
As a workaround, let’s perform some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. To begin, log in to the desktop program as the admin. Then, reset the QuickBooks update to remove the previously downloaded releases.
Here’s how:
Next, go to the Merchant Service Deposit window and check for any transactions. If you continue to get the same result, uninstall and reinstall QuickBooks to start on a clean slate. For detailed instructions, perform the recommended steps in this article: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.
If none of these suggestions work, I suggest you get in touch with our Technical Support Team. One of our support specialists will add your company to the list of affected users in a secure space. You’ll receive an email once there’s progress about the investigation.
For future reference, I’m adding some articles that contain troubleshooting steps on how to resolve payment issues in QuickBooks and your Merchant Services account.
Reach out to me if you have any questions or clarifications. I’m always here ready to answer them for you. Have a good one.
It is now 2022 and I am just now getting this same error. I has worked perfectly for me until last month. Tried QB support chat...took 35 minutes to tick me off because it was going no where. And when I mean no where, I mean it took the support guy 5 min to respond to anything. And after 35 minutes, he tried to confirm what the issue was and was TOTALLY wrong as to what I had asked in the first place. He then started re-asking questions that he had asked 30 minutes earlier. Total crap service. I am now looking to leave QB because service is JUNK. Any suggestions.
Oh yeah, and none of the solutions in this thread work.
Good morning, @CJC54.
Thanks for taking the time to share your concerns here in the QuickBooks Community. Please know that this is not the impression we wish to leave you with.
The investigation (50048) that my colleague mentioned above has been closed by our Engineering Team. Since the workaround steps that my colleague shared aren't working for you, I recommend reaching out to our phone support team. This way, one of our tech support agents can review your account in a secure environment and resubmit this investigation for further review. You can use the link I've included below to connect with our team directly.
I'm always here if you have any additional questions or concerns. Take care!
Thank you for your reply. I will try calling then tomorrow to see if they are any better than the chat support. However, I have an extremely bad taste in my mouth for the lack of support I've received so far. Shouldn't take me posting a negative comment to get a phone number from someone. I asked the chat person for a phone number, searched QB home page, help menu in QB and even asked the sales team. Nothing. Customer service should always be easy to find and better than the product itself. I wasted 2 hours in total yesterday and go no where. That is not acceptable. I do not pay people to make my life harder.
Yea, I had the same problem. I think it was a computer algorithm, because no human can be that stupid. I literally said, I was having the problem over the past few days, but this is the first time I have contacted anyone about this issue.
The very next response was, "How long have you had this problem." Also, my first response I said exactly what I did and exactly the error message I received. The response was, what are you trying to do and what is keeping you from getting it done.
I can't believe Intuit even thinks this is acceptable. Believe me, I need to find a new product because this is just crazy how bad it is.
If this was being actively worked on in early 2020, WHY IS IT STILL POPPING UP? I am having this issue in 2021 Quickbooks desktop!
I am getting this same error and cannot fix it. Has there been any explanation yet as to why this problem is still happening 3 years later?
Any help is appreciated.
Any update on this error? I have never gotten it before and now it will not go away and I cannot add payments through the Merchant Services.
I have tried going through the help menu, which only yields yet another error mesage.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hello there, @10bethany. Thanks for reaching out to us.
When the company file cannot be read properly by QuickBooks or when the data in QuickBooks is damaged, error codes or notifications will appear. Installing the QuickBooks Tool Hub will isolate the issue. Here's how:
Then, follow these steps to run the Quick Fix my File.
Please visit this article for more detailed steps: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.
If the issue persists, I recommend fixing company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor or uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks using the clean install procedure. This tool can assist in quickly correcting frequent errors and returning to normal operations.

This has just started happening to me as well, in Desktop Pro 2021. It seems like if it is happening to this many people, it is a sofware problem that should be fixed on Quickbooks' end, rather than those of us who pay so much money to have to run fixes. Customer service does not know what they are doing 9 times out of 10. The last three times I have called they have given me fixes that I later learned were not the correct way to fix my problem, so I had to redo all of my work. Anyone have a software program with better service? QB is absolute junk now that they have gone to yearly subscriptions.
Same thing started happening to me as well. First it started with being unable to load the merchant deposit page due to an error, which was resolved by closing the company file and exiting quickbooks and restarting it. Now I get the "A search for bank accounts in quickbooks has caused an error" message on all 7 of my company files trying to enter merchant service deposits. Obviously something on quickbooks end has messed up for all of us to start randomly getting these errors. I've tried everythinig short of uninstalling and reinstalling quickbooks, its just a pain because I have a total of 11 company files I have to load back in if I do that. Seems to be no work arounds at this point. Will report back in unistalling/reinstalling does anything.

I have found an easy fix for this that does not involve completely uninstalling the program, you can just repair the installation instead and it fixes it.
To do on on windows 10 -
1) In the bottom left hand screen of the computer - In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel and select Control Panel from the results.
2)Select Programs > Select Programs and Features.
3)Right-click the program you want to fix and select Repair, or if that's not available, select Change/unistall. Then follow the directions on the screen.
4) This will take you to a window that seems like you will uninstall quickbooks, but it is okay, just click next and it will give you an option to starf repairing the program. Let the repair run and relaunch quickbooks (I do it as administrator) and it should work.
This appears to have fixed my merchant service issues.
This fix of repairing Quickbooks worked for me. Thank you!
Hi there, AimeeR.
Thanks for getting back to us. I'm glad repairing QuickBooks works for you. Anyway, if there's anything else that you'd like to help us with, let us know so we can get back to you as soon as possible. Have a nice day ahead!
This worked for me! Thank you so much for sharing!!
I have had this error message for weeks. I could still see transactions in the history on the bottom of the page, but was unsure if payments would come in. I tried the tool hub-no errors found, updated quickbooks (2021 pro desktop). Read through this thread. Decided to do a clean install of quickbooks. When I went to windows control panel to uninstall Quickbooks, windows have me the option to repair (uninstall/repair) the files. I chose repair. It fixed it. Apparently windows had some files related to quickbooks that needed patches. Now when I access merchant services I get no error message and can see all transactions.
