error OL 222

When trying to import transactions from Suntrust I am getting error code OL 222 for one of the accounts.  I have googled an d read and tried everything.  What do I need to do to get these transactions into QBs?  Can I import a csv?  If not - what?

You may need a converter app.

Let's get rid of the error so you can import transactions successfully, knapiks.

The Error OL-222 you're getting means QuickBooks didn't receive a valid response from the financial institution's server. This happens when you try to import one or more characters.

You'll want to correct the unsupported characters in the .QBO file which causes this error:

  1. Right-click the .QBO file and select Edit.
  2. Select any text editor app to open the file.
  3. Find and remove &amp from the text as it is an invalid character.
  4. Save the file again.

Visit this article for more details on how to fix the Error OL 222 in QuickBooks Desktop: Error: OL-222 after downloading a Web Connect file from an approved bank.

l

Otherwise, use Excel to edit the .QBO file and search for a QBO to CSV converter online. (Like the one Fiat Lux - Asia suggested) After editing the file, make sure to convert it back to .QBO file format.

Once done, you can import the file again to QuickBooks Desktop.

So I started downloading one week at a time, then one day at a time and found the day causing the problem.  No & amps.  Could it be anything else?  At least I can bring one day in manually but something is stopping it and it would be good to know what other characters are problematic.  Thanks.

We'd want to make sure that we get this sorted out so you can import your banking transactions, knapiks.

As mentioned by my colleague @Charies_M, the Error OL-222 you get means QuickBooks didn't receive a valid response from the financial institution's server. This is often caused by when you try to import one or more characters.

To get this resolve, updating the QuickBooks Desktop release version is a good start when it comes to fixing program-related issues.  And make sure to create a backup copy of your company file.

After that, rectify the.QBO file format and try to import the transactions again.

If the issue persists, you can visit this article and follow the next troubleshooting steps (proceed to Solution 3): Error: OL-222 after downloading a Web Connect file from an approved bank.

Additional troubleshooting steps are also provided here on how to fix import issues in QuickBooks Desktop: Fix Web Connect import errors.

I'm also adding our page about bank and bank feeds for future reference.

TY for responding.  I have read all these already and tried them.  I did narrow it down to one day by imporitng a little at a time.  So the feed is fine.  But there were no & symbols in that one day.  What other symbols should I be looking for?

Hello, knapiks.

I appreciate you for reading and trying the solutions on the links provided by my colleagues, and good job that your bank feed is working fine. When you try to import characters .QBO file that isn't compliant with the Open Financial Exchange (OFX) standard for exchanging financial data with QuickBooks.

An example of invalid characters would be &. By simply editing the .qbo file in Text Edit and removing all instances of this, it can allow QuickBooks to properly import the file. To edit the unsupported file, you can follow my colleague's steps above.

Also, I suggest following the steps in downloading a new FIDER.txt file. Take note that before doing the steps, make sure to back up your company file and close your QuickBooks.

For detailed steps, feel free to open this article and proceed to Solution 3:  Error: OL-222 after downloading a Web Connect file from an approved bank.

Is there a published list of invalid characters anywhere?

error OL 222

Thanks for actively responding, @knapiks. At the moment, QuickBooks doesn't have a list of invalid characters.

QuickBooks follows the OFX Consortium's specific Offx guidelines. If a financial institution fails to meet these, QuickBooks won't be able to import the .qbo file.

At this point, I'd suggest you contact your financial institution as this could be a formatting issue that they need to correct. Web Connect banking companies and financial institutions know how to deal with this kind of problem.

Additionally, it's best to get your Bank Log files before contacting your bank to help them find the issue or error.

You can also follow the steps to review the Web Connect file for errors under Next Steps: Advance troubleshooting outlined in this help article: Fix Web Connect import errors

Wow, this is so typical of QB support. I had this same issue like 8 years ago before I trashed it. I've recently been forced to return to desktop due to the outrageous costs of QB online, and still the same issue exists now as it did then. My first online download failed, same stupid, nonsensical, error message, which pretty much says "f*** you, we don't care enough to actually fix this or tell you what's wrong with the file."

Thanks a pantload QB support. WTF did I pay for - the same piece of crap from 8+ years ago? really?

What you're actually telling us is that we need to just ignore the massively broken download/sync and manually enter everything - like any of us have time for that. Nice.

Intuit still sucks.

@zog

Consider to use the converter tool to import your data as a workaround.

Otherwise, time to explore other accounting apps to migrate your data.

When I used to download I would get an option to save as file or import to QBs.  The was an option for "always give me the option to save"  or something like that.  Now it just goes directly to QBS - or not.  I may have accidentally unchecked the option box.  Is there a way to get the option back?  I am pretty sure it is a QBs option because I have seen it with 3 different banks.

Thanks for joining us here today, @knapiks.

Let me share some information about downloaded transactions. To verify, are you using Direct Connect? If so, QuickBooks will automatically download your bank transactions available from your bank. That could be the reason why you're unable to see the save option.

To see this option, you'll have to download your bank transactions using Web Connect. Right after you download the .qbo file, you'll be prompted to save the file before importing.

Here's a guide on how to upload bank transactions via WebConnect file: Download Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

After downloading the file manually, you'll want to proceed with matching your bank transactions with QuickBooks.

Please let me know if you still have questions or concerns with bank transactions. I'm always here to assist you. Take care and have a good one.

I am pretty sure it is web connect.    I did not set it up.   But I didn't change anything so whatever it was before it should still be.  And I should get that message unless I unwittingly check the "don't ask me again" box or whatever it is.

It is web connect and it does not give me the option to save.  It immediately goes to QBs.  Sometimes there is an error but without saving, I have no way to find it.

I also have been having the same problem with error OL222.  I just spent 32 minutes on the phone with support and was finally told to call the bank and they should fix it.  So do I call my client and say, call your bank, ask for technical support,.......etc.   This used to work.  Every change and update, something else has to be fixed and it involves someone else.  Seriously I pay a lot of money for this software yearly and I am so tired of being on the phone with support.  Doesn't leave much time to work.  So do I bill my clients for QuickBooks failures.  I think its time to look at other software.

What I am asking is:  Is there a setting I can change to bring back the option to save rather than automatically improting?  This seems like it waould be a QB's setting but I cannot find under preferences.

Hi there, knapiks.

Welcome back to the thread to add some clarification about an option to save as a file or import to QuickBooks when using web connect. I'll ensure you're able to view the option that you need it.

When downloading entries with Web Connect, there are two ways to import transactions: inside and outside of QuickBooks Desktop. However, you'll have to use Web Connect outside of QuickBooks Desktop to see the option to download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file before importing them into QBDT.

Here's how:

  1. Open a web browser and go to your bank’s website.
  2. Sign in to your bank account using your normal process.
  3. Download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file.
  4. After you have the Web Connect file, follow the steps to import it into QuickBooks Desktop.

Please note that every bank has various methods for downloading QuickBooks Web Connect files. If you're not sure how to do it, you'll have to go to your bank's website and look for their steps. If you can't find any, reach out to your bank for advice.

For further details on how downloading transactions from your banks to QBDT works, you can click this article: Download Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once everything is good, you can review your entries by adding and matching them in QuickBooks Desktop to avoid double transactions.

Lastly, you may refer to this article to see the detailed steps on how you can reconcile your accounts so they match your bank and credit card statements: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Desktop.

Please let me know how the call goes. I'm always here if you need anything else or should you have additional questions. Have a great rest of the day.

I am running into the same error message.  I narrowed it down to one day. But I still have not found anyone that can answer as to why I am no longer being given the option to open the file in QB or save it.  Whenever I downloaded to QBs, and then clicked on the download in the lowere left corner of bank webpage, I was given this option.  It is not longer there so I cannot save the file to look for errors.  Do you have any idea how to get the option back?

error OL 222

It isn't the kind of experience that we want you to come across, knapiks.

The error OL-222 indicates that the system receives an invalid response from your financial provider's server. This is often caused by one or more characters in the .QBO file that aren't compliant with the Open Financial Exchange (OFX) standard for exchanging financial data with QuickBooks.

This may also happen if the downloaded .qbo file is formatted incorrectly and needs to be fixed by the financial institution.

With this, try updating your QuickBooks file to the latest release. If the same error persists, try correcting the invalid formatting. Here's an article for the detailed steps of the process: Error: OL-22.

I'll be around to ensure that this gets resolved. Stay safe!

Why is no one answering my actual question?

I have been sent this same answer 5 times.  I am not using a Mac so that solution is moot.  I cannot open the QB's file anymore.  I no longer am given the option to save the file when I download from bank.  That is what I am tryng to solve.  It goes directly to QB's without the option to save or import;

CAN I GET THAT OPTION BACK?

This is the question I have been asking.

This isn't the kind of service we want you to experience, @knapiks.

I'll share some information about the save option. Currently, when using the WebConnect file, you can only download transactions for a specific account or download transactions for all your accounts at the same bank.

If you wish to save a copy of the transactions, you can save them manually on your computer or an external drive.

I'll be adding this link here in case you need help managing bank-related tasks: Find help with bank feeds and reconciling accounts.

whenI exported a file from a bank, I used to get a window that gave me the option to save as a file or import directly.  I no longer get that window.  So i cannot save them.  The option is gone.  My question is how do I et it back?  Is it a QB's setting?  I don't know why it went away.
