Hello, DonnyMc.

Thanks for posting to the Community.

There are several reasons may fail to open the company file. Some of them are listed below:

  • QuickBooks company file is damaged or corrupted.
  • The same file is opened on a shared network.
  • Using incorrect methods to open certain files.
  • Using the wrong QuickBooks version to open files.

To resolve the issue, we need to follow some recommended steps in order to open our company file.

Step 1: Make sure you are update the latest release of QuickBooks.

Step 2: You'll need to open a company file (QBW) with a .qbw extension at the end of the filename.

Step 3: Let's identify what's causing of the issue by following the steps below.

        a. Open the Windows Start menu.

        b. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.

        c. Search for and find the QuickBooks.exe file. It’s usually in your QuickBooks folder.

        d. Hold down CTRL on your keyboard and double-click QuickBooks.exe

If still persists, please don't open your company file. Instead, click Open a sample file. Then, if the sample file open successfully, you can now move on to Step 4. Please check out this article for more detailed steps on fixing the issue of company file won't open.

Thank you for the prompt response last night.  There was an H505 error message and I was able to walk through the steps and get everything working correctly.

Again, thanks!
