QB desktop 2020 no longer importing QBO file that I downloaded to my computer from my bank.

I get an error OL-222. These have worked fine until I updated today. I know that QB2020 desktop (mac) is no longer supported, but cannot understand why I cannot even manually import a qbo file from my hard-drive.

If the update forced my software to no longer import my own documents (qbo), am I able to downgrade to the previous version using my Time Machine backup (mac)?

Hello, gatehealing.

I'm sharing some details about the Error OL-222 you've encountered in QuickBooks Desktop for MAC.

This Error occurs when downloading and importing a QBO file from your bank. It shows a pop-up message on a screen like this "QuickBooks was not able to complete your request. Please get in touch with your financial institution. (OL-222) ". It looks like the issue you're experiencing is related to the format of the .qbo file or the list of Financial Institutions in QuickBooks. To fix this, you can try updating the list of Financial Institutions in QuickBooks or double-checking the format of the .qbo file you're trying to import.

To get this resolved, back up the QuickBooks company file, then make sure you've most recently updated QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release, and make sure you're on a supported version of QuickBooks. Then the file you downloaded from your bank is a .qbo file.

For more detailed steps and other troubleshooting steps, you can visit this article for more details on how to fix the Error OL 222 in QuickBooks Desktop for MAC: Fix Error OL-222 in QuickBooks for Mac

Please get back to me if you continue to get the same results so I can look further into this. Keep safe, and have a good one!

QB desktop 2020 no longer importing QBO file that I downloaded to my computer from my bank.

Thanks, but I don't use QB 2020 desktop for Mac to connect directly to my bank. That never worked, so I have always downloaded a QBO file to my computer, then clicked the Import QBO file from the downloaded transactions window. I actually tried to import the last successful qbo file and got the same error . . . so I know for a fact that one is in the correct format because it downloaded previously.

I am thinking QuickBooks may be trying to force people to move to the subscription-based products, but I only use QB to keep track of transactions, not for payroll, I don't need it to connect to the internet for anything at all as I manually download my QBO file, and manually input my credit card charges.

(so I do know that QB2020 desktop for mac is discontinued, but I should be able to manually import files as that involves no connection to internet, or any online services of QB.

I have tried restoring from my Time Machine backup to a point prior to this latest update, then chose a backup data file from where I start QB. I still get the same error, both with the current qbo file, and the last one that I know imported from my hard drive just fine.

How can I get rid of this latest update and revert to the previous one? Not needing to go back to QB2016, just want to get rid of the update from today as that seems to be what is causing the problem.

Thanks

Jon

I'll chime in and share my thoughts about why you're getting this error.

As far as I know, the QuickBooks Desktop 2020 software discontinuation is after May 31, 2023. It includes all 2020 versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions v20. Other Intuit products are affected by the software discontinuation.

Part of the discontinuation is the unavailability of manual bank import. That said, you're getting the error because the QBDT Mac version is not supported anymore. You can visit this article for more detailed information: QuickBooks Desktop 2020 service discontinuation policy. Although this link is for QBDT for Windows, the same concept applies to Mac.

If ever you upgrade to a supported version and the same error occurs, you can check out this article to learn how to fix it: Fix error OL-222 in QuickBooks for Mac.

So upgrading to this latest update screwed me up? Is it possible for me to just roll back my updates to the previous one that worked, then not update after that? I can move QB2020 desktop mac to a computer that does not connect at all to the internet, thus no need for security updates.

Upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop Mac is irreversible, gate. Once upgraded, you can no longer roll back to a lower version.

It's still possible for you to use the QBDT Mac 2020. The discontinuation also causes the unavailability of some functionalities including payroll, Credit Card processing, and banking. Therefore, the option to import to QuickBooks Online is also unavailable unless QBDT is supported. See this for more details: QuickBooks Desktop 2020 service discontinuation policy.

I screwed myself by doing the upgrade then. I do not understand why a non-internet-based functionality has been turned off. I download my qbo statement from my browser to my hard drive, then import it.

Have you tried downloading a CSV or Excel file from your bank?

In Excel you can format it correctly and then copy and paste it into the bulk transactions window. It may take more steps but it

might be a work around for you. I also think it's ridiculous that they are pushing people to the newest subscription model. But when they have a monopoly and they have no competitors they can do whatever they want 🤷🏻‍

I'll try it! I have mac Numbers instead of excel, but I am able to download as qbo so I may not have to try to reformat a xls file. I'll look for the bulk transactions feature and see if it works.

They sort of do have a monopoly, except for people like me that are small with no inventory and don't do payroll via qb. There are free softwares out there that I am going to switch to if this doesn't work. Just a drop in the bucket for Intuit to lose me, but hopefully plenty of people will read this thread and a few can drop QB altogether. Won't change anything whatsoever at Intuit, but I'll not be contributing to their profit. If I can keep QB2020DT mac, then that'll be even better as I am still not paying anything in addition to what I spent on the original product.

Yes, I am just going back to MS excel.  QB is a waste if Intuit makes business decisions to cancel service.  As you mentioned, while they don't care about small business/personal customers with this latest decision to "reneg" a purchase contract, then it is not worth purchasing again.

Explore a free accounting program to install and run it on your machine.

I just want to report the same issue.  But I have NOT installed updates, and rarely do, because I don't want things changing.  I don't use anything that needs updates, just need to get out invoices and track my checking accounts. I have this same issue, QBO file has always needed a manual download and import.  I'm on at least 1 or 2 years back on QB updates and see no reason why a QBO manual import won't work.  Kind of makes me think all imports use an API to check something and , in this case, maybe its blocking the use of the file imports.  If that's the case, Intuit is forcing disabled the use of software we paid for, and that's wrong, just so wrong.  Some of us don't need constant updates for taxes.

I'm looking into Moneyworks or something else.

I'm not seeing a Bulk Transactions window? Is that just my register? Or should I be looking someplace specific for this?

Ridiculous that they have blocked manual import for web connect.

@TheWorst

If you are using an outdated QBD (Windows), you can use a 3rd party tool as a workaround.

.csv doesn't work either - total money grab from Intuit to get people over to the online subscription which is extremely expensive for the small business owner that doesn't use payroll, invoicing, etc. I'll be finding another option,

@casadolce

You are using QBD 2020, correct? You need to have a 3rd party tool to import bank statements from *.csv file format. Another option, use the trial version of QBD 2021 to import the bank feed directly from your bank. Contact me in private for details.

Apologies for the delayed reply - I'm sure you've already found it, but just in case: It would be the "Batch Enter Transactions" option under the Accountant menu. And, yes, unfortunately it seems to work only with excel even though you're just doing a copy paste. Very odd but it's the best I've found.

@casadolce

I was able to copy (ctrl c) the data from my excel spreadsheet and paste (ctrl v) it into the batch transaction entry screen. I used keyboard shortcuts specifically.

It requires some formatting but it may save some bucks on third party software.

However, I have been using Transaction Pro to do some "back end" time activity entries into QBO. I haven't had any issues.

If it makes you feel any better, I have Quickbooks Desktop 19 for Mac.  I have NEVER updated the software to a newer version, but I am still being locked out of importing QBO files.  It seems illegal the Intuit has sent some data to my purchased software (without my knowledge, or consent) and basically made my software purchase obsolete.

So I don't think you updating to the latest version had any effect, even without accepting an update they've managed to rip-off their customers!

You are using an outdated QB Desktop for Mac and no importer tool support it. I can share another option and you can use QB Desktop for Mac with a non-subscription license. You can use the bank feed feature again. Click on my profile name and you will find our email address to send an email to.

Actually this article helped me solve the problem:

I downloaded the 2023 FIDIR.txt and replaced my old 2019 txt file.

Thats how i feel also, Win 11, reinstalled version QB "Pro" 2020 after Microsoft crashed my laptop with an "update". Intuit has intentionally crippled my legally purchased software by not longer allowing me to download/import transactions manually, never mind automatically. The greedy control freaks out there want us continue updating to "remain compatible" or to go online on a subscription service where you have to pay monthly for each set of books you keep (we keep 4 sets, 3 self-employed accounts and 1 personal-  which would cost a hell of a lot more )
