How do I fix the account balances on the home page. It shows that there is a negative balance in the bank account, but the check register shows a positive balance, which is correct.
Hey there, @kkerley.
Thanks for reaching out to the Community for support. I know it can be rough when your balances in QuickBooks aren't showing the correct amounts, but don't sweat it. We will get you back in balance and sort this out in just a few simple steps.
Typically when we see unusual behavior such as your account balances showing one as positive and one as negative, we check the file for potential data issues. To do this, we run a Rebuild and Verify on the company file. A Rebuild and Verify is designed to scan the company file for integrity issues and resolve them. I've included the steps below to run a Rebuild and Verify.
Rebuild:
Please note: Your computer may display the message QuickBooks is not responding. However, as long as you can see your mouse cursor move, the Rebuild is still ongoing. Wait for it to complete.
Verify:
You can see additional details in Resolving Potential Data Issues.
Once you're finished with the Rebuild and Verify, check your balances to see if they're corrected. If not, you can Merge the two accounts into one. This will combine the two and resolve any damage in the Chart of Accounts. Please note: Be sure to create a back up before merging the two accounts.
Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns. I'll be here every step of the way. You can reach out to the Community any time you need a helping hand. We got your back. Take care and have a fantastic week!
I had the same problem with the Home page account balances not being correct.
I am currently running the Rebuild Data and am currently on 3.5 hours and it is only about a third done.
Is this normal? Our data file is very big.
How much longer do you think it will take?
It will take a while since you have a large file, Tracy112.
As long as you see the mouse cursor move, you can wait for it to complete. Click OK and proceed to the next step once you get the message Rebuild has completed.
If it take that much longer, you can restart your computer. Then, run again the verify and rebuild data.
I've added this article for instructions and complete detailed steps: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Stay in touch with me if you need additional information about rebuilding the data on your file. I'm always around to help you @Tracy112 .
The rebuild data task just aborted after 4.5 hours and it was just about half done.
Do you think there is a bigger problem? Should I try again tomorrow?
The only problem we are having is that the home page checking account balance is not correct. It all started after the last QB update the week of 11/16/20.
Thank your providing us an update after trying those steps, @Tracy112.
Yes, you can try to run the Verify and rebuild tools once again. The Verify Data will identify any data issues within your company file. Then, the Rebuild tool will self-resolve it. You can follow the steps provided by Tori B in running the verify and Rebuild Data tool.
If you get same result, then I suggest reaching out to our Customer Support. Their tools can get into your account in a secure environment, isolate the error you're having and help you resolve it. You can follow the steps below on how to reach them:

We are having this same issue with a customer who was running QuickBooks 2017. Rebuilding fixed the problem but a couple of days later it was back. This time we rebuilt then upgraded them to QB 2021 - problem solved. Two days later, the problem is back. Must be something wrong in the code. There also must be some other way to fix this once-and-for-all other than a constant rebuild.
Hello there, @miradorit.
I appreciate you for upgrading QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to its latest release and rebuilding your company file to solve your customer's account balance issues.
When the Rebuild Data tool temporarily fixes an issue, you can use the QuickBooks File Doctor to permanently repair your customer's company file. Let me guide you how.
You'll first have to download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub and install it on your customer's computer. Here's how:
After that, let's run the Quick Fix my File feature to resolve this matter accordingly. Here's how:
However, in case the problem continues, I'd recommend performing the resolution provided in this article starting Step 3: Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.
I'm also adding this article to learn more about the different methods in fixing minor data issues with your company file: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Please let me know how it goes. I'll be right here to help if you need further assistance in fixing company data matters in QBDT. Take care always.
Hi miradorit.
I encountered the same problem in this past week. We were running Enterprise 19 and upgraded to Enterprise 21 hoping that would correct the problem and it didn't. Running a file rebuild corrects the balances but does not prevent the problem from happening again the very next time we write a check. Did you find a solution in the last few months?
Thanks.
I can share some troubleshooting steps that can fix this issue, rwlthree.
The unusual behavior that you've encountered is an indication of a potential data integrity issue. Verifying and rebuilding data is good practice to maintain a healthy company file. However, there are times that the program is unable to detect certain data damages and errors.
To fix this, you can install QuickBooks Tool Hub and then run the File Doctor utility. This is a collection of tools that can help resolve major issues and errors that a user might face while working with QuickBooks Desktop. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague, Rea_M to be guided in doing the process.
However, if the issue persists, I'd recommend getting in touch with our technical supports. This way, we'll be able to look into your account in a secure session and conduct an investigation. Here's how:

Having the same problem. Hoped that upgrading to 2022 would fix it but it hasn't. There has to be a permanent fix for this in the code. It's ridiculous for you to keep suggesting we rebuild or run the file doctor. Why can't QuickBooks fix this issue? It runs across all versions apparently.
We are an IT company and have been battling with issue for sometime. Had done all the fixes avaialble. Would work for awhile and then act up again. We have a 4-user QB Premier setup. I started to notice when our book keeper was on VK that after the fix was done we had no issue until she returned.
I deleted and recreated all the users, did the complete list of fixes/rebuilds and now it seems stable. Worth a try if you have the recurring issue post fixes.
