If I close a bank account, will I still be able to see past transactions in quickbooks?

Glad to see you in the Community, meg13.

If the account is connected to online banking, you can still see past transactions when you disconnect it. This will only stop QBO from downloading new entries. Make sure to add and match all pending transactions on the Banking page since it will delete any entries in the For Review tab.

Here’s how to unlink the connection:

  1. Go to Banking on the left pane to select the Banking option.
  2. Choose the account you're working on and click the Pencil icon.
  3. Hit the Edit account info menu.
  4. In the Account window, tick the box next to Disconnect this account on save.disconnect.png
  5. Press Save and Close.

However, if you’re trying to delete the bank, you’ll no longer see it from the list of accounts. This is because the process is permanent. You’ll hold on to your old information on financial reports.

If the data on the removed bank shows in other accounts in QBO, it will stay from there. For more insights about these processes, check out the following guide: Disconnect or delete an account connected to online banking.

If this is for a manually added account, this link provides an overview of what will happen when you inactivate it and instructions to delete an account on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

For future reference here's an article that will guide you on how to: Manage default and special accounts in your chart of accounts.

Reach out to me if you have any clarifications or questions. I’ll be glad to lend a helping hand. Have a great day ahead.

Hey there, meg13.

Have you tried performing the troubleshooting steps I shared above? It’s my priority that you can see past transactions after closing the account.

If I close a bank account, will I still be able to see past transactions in quickbooks?

Hi Rasa-LilaM,

Question from your previous response:

"If the account is connected to online banking, you can still see past transactions when you disconnect it. This will only stop QBO from downloading new entries. Make sure to add and match all pending transactions on the Banking page since it will delete any entries in the For Review tab."

What should ido if I didn't match all of the pending transactions before I closed my bank account? Are these transactions lost? Should I add a journal entry with these transactions?

Thanks!

Hi there, kimmyc.

QuickBooks deletes transactions that still need to be categorized in the For review tab once you disconnect the bank.

Also, we don't recommend entering journal entries for bank transactions. If they no longer appear on Banking page, you can download transactions from your bank. Then, manually import them to QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, then Transactions .
  2. Select Bank transactions, then Upload transactions.
  3. Click Drag and drop or select files and then select the file you downloaded from your bank, then select Continue.
  4. In the QuickBooks account  drop-down, select the account you want to upload the transactions into, then select Continue.
  5. Follow the onscreen steps to match the columns on the file with the correct fields in QuickBooks, then select Continue.
  6. Select the transactions you would like to import. Then select Continue.
  7. Click Yes.
  8. When you accept your transactions, select Done.

If you see an error message, don't worry. Here's how to fix errors while uploading your transactions.

Now that your transactions are in QuickBooks, it's time to match and categorize them. The transactions go into your accounts after you review them.

Let me know if there's anything else you need. I'll be right here to help you.

If I close a bank account, will I still be able to see past transactions in quickbooks?

Hi kimmyc,

Did you happen to figure out your question?

I currently have two accounts that were closed before adding transactions and now can't reconcile the accounts because I have no data to import.

Hi kimmyc,

Did you happen to figure out your situation?

The moderator answer didn't make much sense for me.

I, too, didn't match all pending transactions before the account was closed and now can't reconcile the account because there's no data to import.
