Bank Balance does not match Ending Balance

If I am viewing my check register my "ending balance" shows the correct amount. However, if I view my "Chart of Accounts" my bank balance shows substantially more. When I click on my bank account in the chart of accounts it opens up the "Check Register".

Why wouldn't the bank "Balance" on the Chart of Accounts match the "Ending Balance" in the "Register".

I am going crazy trying to figure out why the two numbers don't match and how can I get them to match.

Any help would be appreciated.

Possible file and/or data damage. With the chart of accounts open select edit>resort list, if that doesn't do it run file>utilities>verify data and rebuild data.

Unfortunately this does not work for me.  Accounts on home page and inside register match, but chart of accounts does not.

When you run File->Utilities->Rebuild Data it is still off? Please try it another time and let me know here.

Great. The Verify will only report the error but won't fix it. Rebuild fixes it.

Thanks it worked for me too. but why did this happen?? Ive been using QB since 2009 on a PC and never experienced this. this is my first month on MAC 2014 - is this going to happen all the time now??

It's just a computer thing. Files and data get stored in whatever space is available, sometimes these get fragmented (windows term) and need to be resorted and/or indexed.

The value in the chart of accounts is cached - its a copy that is maintained and then adjusted (rather than summing up the transactions from scratch every time something is changed). Rebuilding should detect if it is off and correct it.

So it should be indicated to MAC users to do this daily or weekly in order to rely on QB for accurate account balances. Otherwise we would need to keep manual chi registers to cross reference balances which is not practical.

It should stay synched up automatically. Occasionally, for some users, it doesn't - there's a bug somewhere that we haven't yet been able to identify. Sorry it is occurring.

Thanks again for the feedback and help with the rebuild data but I still don't understand why this is happened to my new MAC 2014 that I bought only 3 weeks ago as well as my new QB 2014 that I installed at the same time. I never had issues like this for over 6 years with my PC and QB. This is quite difficult to rely on especially when running a small business and every penny counts when paying vendors. I would not recommend MAC QB to others.

My theory about this (which I can't prove but makes sense to me):

New data enters the system mostly around the current date. Over time a lot of data gets created but after it is entered it mostly isn't changed.  The older data is mostly just read but not modified.  Staying on the same system (QuickBooks Windows Desktop for instance) means that the data does not change. When you switch to another system (even QuickBooks Mac Desktop) every bit of the data is read in, modified, and written out to meet the needs of that platform/system.

If there were any errors anywhere along the way (including in the older system) these things are more likely to show up after all of the data has been "touched".

Running rebuild corrected the issue you saw. I'm hoping it stays corrected without taking away any additional time from your work.

I have tried this fix several times and still my end balance is thousands of dollars higher than my bank reconciliation balance (which is correct).  Any other suggestions?  I have checked the chart of accounts and all entries are correct.  Thank you in advance

Glad to see you again, @Lhermitage,

Having to go through multiple troubleshooting steps can be time-consuming when you have more important things to do.

Since you already did the recommended steps but keeps getting the same hitch, I would recommend getting in touch with our QuickBooks Support for further assistance. They can open an investigation specifically for the problem, and provide further troubleshooting to complete your work.

Here's how to contact support:

  1. Go to your QuickBooks Home page, then click the Help menu at the top.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help from the drop-down.
  3. Hit the Contact us icon.

Let me know how the call goes by adding a comment below. I want to make sure you can open the company file and I'm here if you need additional help. Have a good one!

Your best best is to ignore it or customize the report to not show a balance. I have searched extensively and Level 8 Quickbooks folks say it is a bug. For some folks the verify/ rebuild procedure works.  It doesn't for me. I hate modifying formulas in my small excel/ sheets programs because of fear of cascading issues. I can't imagine messing with the full Quickbooks coding.  Just ignore it.  Maybe Quickbooks will remove it entirely soon so we can't see it.
