Can I file 1099s from Quick Books Self Employed online? I thought I did last year, but I don't see the Payroll or Expenses menu the instructions tell me to go to.

Thank you for visiting the Community, jodaemail.

Filing the 1099-MISC form in QuickBooks Self-Employed is unavailable. What you can do is ask your employer or client to send the invite to fill out your W-9.using the email address you use to sign in to your QuickBooks Self-Employed account.

After your employer or client submits your 1099-MISC to the IRS, you will get an email when it's ready for download. Then, sign in to your QuickBooks Self-Employed account and view or print your 1099-MISC.

Here are the steps:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed.
  2. Go to the Clients menu.
  3. Select the Forms tab.

Thanks for the reply!

I am actually trying to send 1099s to three people I hired in 2020 as independent contractors, rather than collect 1099s from an employer or a client.  Is that function possible in QBO for self employed folks?  Or in Turbo Tax (I have the combo QBOSE/Turbo Tax package.)

Let me share some additional information about creating and sending 1099s, @jodaemail.

QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) and QuickBooks Online (QBO) are two different subscriptions.

If you're using QBSE, the feature to create and send 1099s to independent contractors is unavailable. It's designed to track your income, expenses, mileage, and tax info to help you file an annual return and pay estimated tax quarterly. Check this QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview article for more information.

If you're subscribed to our TurboTax bundle, it'll help you send your Schedule C data to TurboTax so you can file your taxes. Here's what your TurboTax Self-Employed subscription lets you:

  • Make online payment for federal estimated quarterly taxes
  • File faster since you can export your Schedule C directly to TurboTax
  • E-file one state and one federal return without filing fees

See this article for more information: Upgrade to the QuickBooks Self-Employed and TurboTax Self-Employed bundle.

You may also consider subscribing to QBO, to let you create 1099s and send them to your contractors. You can refer to the following article for more information on how to create and file 1099s using QuickBooks Online.

I'm always here if you have any other concerns in creating and sending 1099's to your contractors. Take care and have a great rest of the day!
