Hello,
I just printed my 2023 1096 form for our 1099-NEC and it is marking the "X" in box 95 and it should be 71. Please check your form when you print it. I suggest printing on plain paper first. I contacted QB and they have assigned an investigation case for it. To me it looks like the IRS has changed the lineup on the boxes in area 6, which is throwing off the alignment in QB. Maybe I am wrong, but we will see what QB has to say. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I'd also feel the same way when something isn't printing correctly, @kris1.

Thank you so much for your response. I will reach out to them again to follow up. And thank you for the links, although it is not a printing issue on my part, rather it's a formatting issue on QB's side with the additional "square/field" on the IRS form for this current year. Hopefully it is fixed soon.
Has there been an update to this issue? I just tried to print my 1096-NEC and am having the same formatting issues.
This is definitely still an issue. I just updated our Desktop Pro Plus 2024 hoping that would have a fix. It still checks the MISC box instead of the NEC box for the 2023 1096.
Thanks kris1 for contacting QB and getting a case started.
You are so welcome!! I hope they resolve it very soon.
I truly understand the challenges you've encountered. Upon checking here, there's an ongoing investigation (INV-97494) about the 1096-NEC form print format issue.

Not that I know of yet. Hopefully soon!
Having the same issue with 1096 form.
We are having alignment issues with W-2's this year as well. Spoke with support but they could not help unless we purchased the forms from QuickBooks Intuit. Any suggestions?
Added myself to the affected user list. Thank you for the info jeanbiverly_
I do not have any suggestions at this time KJ-10. I have not started my W2's, which I did not buy from QB. Shame on QB for suddenly not supporting other forms that state "compatible" with QB. Besides the 1096 is an IRS "change" that QB should comply with. It really has no value that you have to buy QB forms, in my opinion. I have used QB for over 20 years and now they decide against correcting some format issues on their side?? I am confused. It may be the last year I use them. I am still feeling confident they will correct this issue. They have way too many clients not to. The statement from where I bought my forms states the forms are compatible with Quickbooks.
kris1, it appears that our alignment issue for the W-2s was not QB's fault, but had to do with Microsoft Edge (probably an update) taking over as the default pdf reader. We switched the reader back to Adobe and were able to make alignment adjustments that actually worked.
Now when QB's gets the 1096 Box Error issue fixed, We can all celebrate! I'm sure they are working on it.
I am having the exact same problem. I have all my contractors mapped correctly, coded correctly and QuickBooks still puts the X on the 1099 box for 1099-MISC and NOT box 71, the CORRECT box for 1099-NEC, as it should be.
I'd like to see QuickBooks get these things right now that we are paying over 67% more for the same product.
Come on QuickBooks, these forms have deadlines.... sigh
Quickbooks has to fix this, those of us who did everything correctly are still dealing with the problem of QuickBooks not handling the 1096 correctly for form 1099-NEC.
Good questions, has QuickBooks done anything to fix THEIR error? Ever since Covid I have found QuickBooks to excessively expensive and declining in product and this just proves it

I am glad you were able to figure out your W2 issue and it was not related to QB. This gives me hope they will fix the 1096 printing error.
I totally agree!! Keeping my fingers crossed they correct it SOON!
I am doing a work around. I have put a removable tab over the box it is printing to in error. I print the form, remove the tab and then mark the correct box.
Is there any update to this issue?
I am having the same issue, I have multiple companies, this is a real inconvenience.
QBOOKS / INTUIT, please resolve this issue immediately.
ict2,
That is a great idea! I will do that also, except QB really needs to adjust this easily correctable printing error. We all pay enough for their software. I am still confident they will send out an update by next week. Thank you for sharing your idea.
Has there been any progress on this issue?
