I want to set up an employee to be paid by the piece instead of by the hour. If I use timesheets, I can post to the correct item within the job budget by then I have to use hours which doesn't work. If I don't use timesheets and just create a paycheck, I can use a quantity of 1 and enter the amount of the piece work but in my perfect world, I would be able to enter a quantity and a price per piece associated with it. Anyone know if that can be done?

Yes, use a Commission type item, which will let you enter a Qty and a Rate.

Now that I have it set up properly and am entering line items for payroll how can I run a report to see what I've entered before I committ it to a paycheck? I have several line items with several different jobs and I can't see it all in the Preview Paycheck window. I would like to print out the info to double check my data entry before I process the paycheck and post to the job. I can't find any report so I ran the payroll but the paystub lumps similar rates as one line item and the jobs don't print on the stub. Any help in where I can find a report that give me this info would be great!
Hello, @cp1014.
Allow me to join the thread and help share information about running payroll reports in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
As of now, we don't have the option to open/run a report showing the items entered for payroll before creating a paycheck. I want to ensure customers like you are having the best possible experience while working with QBDT. If you want to run a report showing the items you've entered before creating a paycheck, I suggest sending feedback straight to our Product Developers/Engineers.

Keep me posted if you have any other questions about running reports, I'd be glad to help you. Have a good day ahead!
Thank you for that info. I submitted the feedback. One other question is that the line items that I enter in the Payroll Preview screen do not show up on the paystub so the employee also doesn't know what jobs they are getting paid for. Is this a setting somewhere? I can't find it if it is but it seems useless to enter all that info on the paycheck and not have it show up for the employee to see.
Hello there, cp1014.
Let me share some insights about the information displayed on pay stubs.
If you're referring to the Customer Job entered on the paycheck detail window, this will not show on the pay stub. All Employee paid taxes will show on your employees pay stubs.
I'd appreciate if you can send us this idea as a product suggestion. Sending your feedback online is a big help for us to determine the features that need to be added to our product.

Hello my name is Julia. When I do commission, I cannot see the quantity? thank you for all and future assistance.
How do I enter the quantity, I have Quickbooks Online?
Hi there, MAGEXPRESS.
Allow me to join the conversation and point you in the right direction about setting up employee’s pay by the piece.
Adding the piece rate wage is currently available in the desktop version. In QBO, you can use the Other Earnings option and rename it.
After adding the pay type, you’ll have to manually multiply the amount to the quantity. Once you have the information handy, enter it to the paycheck.
For more in-depth information about adding a custom pay type, check out this article: Other earnings.
We strive to provide better features so customers can efficiently manage their business. Rest assured, I’ll let you know once there’s an update about this.
You can also visit the QBO Blog to look for updates on what products, services, and apps are available.
This should point you in the right direction.

There is nothing more frustrating than reading an article like this and being unable to find the menu items mentioned. Here, the responder instructs to go to "Workers" and "click on how much do you pay this employee?" Okay. Well...in my version of QBO there is no such question. When I click on "Workers" I must then choose between "Employees" and "Contractors." I choose Employees. It then brings me to a list of my employees. Nowhere is there a question that asks how much I pay this employee. Thinking that perhaps I must choose to edit an employee, I pick one to edit. It brings me to the screen attached. Once again, nowhere does it ask me how much I pay this employee. Incredibly frustrating. Useless help.
Please know that this isn’t the type of service we want you to experience, @MVG1.
You need to click the employee's name that you want to pay. Let me show you how to do it.
Here's how:
Once done, you’ll have to manually multiply the amount to the quantity. Once you have the information handy, enter it to the paycheck.

Yes. An active QuickBooks Payroll subscription should be enabled in the system, so you'll get through adding an earnings or any additional pay types to the employee's profile.

When are time tracking and payroll companies going to really address the pay-by-the-piece problem that so many companies have. The best they have to offer are crappy work-arounds that always create other problems.
Come on QuickBooks, come on Gusto, come on ADP, come on TSheets... solve the probem. With the gig economy, this is only going to get bigger.
I too am having the same challenges with the KB articles provided.
I use QB online and follow the below.
1. Go to Workers
2. Go to Employees
3. Select Employee (Add Employee (Edit Employee details) record opens)
4. Scroll down to step 3. How much do you pay X?
5. Click on "Add additional pay types (like overtime, sick, and vacation pay)
6. Scroll down to bottom of page and click on (Even more ways to pay X...(not common)
- Nothing happens
- In order to get this option, you MUST select Commission Only (the very first question "How do you pay X?"
7. Repeat step 6
8. Select "Other Earnings"
9. Select (Add other earnings type Recurring amount:$(optional))
10. Give it a name
11. Select Done
- here is where it gets tricky
a. Unable to see the other earnings type for other employees to add to them
b. Try to recreate them and receive error it already exists.
Other KA's such as Add or Change Pay Types in Online Payroll does not show how to remove any that you have and don't want anymore.
Very frustrating and just signed up, but ready to cancel and go with something easier to use with proper instructions. This is crazy and shouldn't be this difficult to find solutions. I do the Chat and they send me to the KA's that are of zero help.
Good Evening, @crutch0316.
Other than using a commission pay type to enter a customer dollar amount to be paid on the paycheck, you'd need to create a time-sheet. However, with the trouble that you're having when you're navigating through the steps, it relates more to a browser issue. But don't worry. You can try using a different browser or a private window to open QuickBooks in to remove the message. Here's how:
Use a private browser or incognito window
If this works, then go to your regular browser session and clear your browser's history.
Use a different browser
We recommend using Google Chrome because QuickBooks was made around Chrome.
Let me know if this helps. I want to make sure that you're able to get back to running your business. Bye for now!
Hello
I am trying to set up a new employee that is paid by the piece not hour. I have quickbooks desktop and cannot find this info anywhere. Thank you for any help you can give.
I'll help you set up new employees where you can pay them by piece in QuickBooks, @Charries.
We can use the payroll commission item to track your employees by piece in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). If you haven't set up your employees yet, we can follow the steps provided in this article to add them to QBDT: How to add an employee in QuickBooks.
Once done, you can follow these steps to add a new payroll item for your employees.
You can repeat these steps for the rest of the employees that you need to pay by piece. Then, you can now create paychecks for them. Just select the payroll item that you've created.
That's it! Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to be of assistance. Wishing you and your business continued success in all that you do.
Hi, please advise how I setup employee to show as complete - I pay per job, not regular and not hourly rate. I know I can add Commission but it will not let me complete employee set up unless I select / enter into these boxes?
I can see other earning but it still does not allow you to complete setup of employee without adding, salary, payrate and contracted hours to their profile?
I appreciate you for joining the thread, @Darren65. I'll outline a couple of handy details to ensure you'll be able to complete your employee setup.
The system requires you to set up an employee pay type aside from the other earning for completion. To sort this out, we can create a dummy rate and enter zeroes under the Set default hours.
Once you run the payroll, we can enter zero (0) under the Regular pay section.
For more information on managing your employee, I'll add this article for your guide: Add your new employee to QuickBooks Payroll.
Also, QBO has several ready-made reports that you can access to view your employee and business information. To get started, see this link: Run payroll reports.
