QB Payroll Core: "Error while exporting transactions. Please try again later."

I added a new kind of pre-tax deduction for a single employee today. QB Online Payroll Core would not allow me to run payroll until I assigned an Export category for the new deduction.

Cool, I thought. It's good that the software caught it. I followed the instructions to map the deduction to the right QBO account -- but was never able to log in successfully, literally ending up in an infinite loop (credentials accepted, validation code accepted, return to log in screen. Root cause of this might be the was QuickBooks migrated us from Inuit Payroll to QB Core Payroll. We have a QBO account and a QB Payroll account that are accessed through a single log-in, but I have a feeling the export permissions don't understand this. The screens asking for passwords look dated and "back end" ish.

With payroll due today, I deleted my desired new deduction category and used another category to process the check accurately. Payroll went through (hooray) and I now have a list of checks to export. But every export attempt yields this error:

"QB Payroll Core: "Error while exporting transactions. Please try again later."

Two calls to QB support have not yielded an answer. I've tried different browsers, incognito windows, toggling export on/off, etc. Granted, I shouldn't have to have had to remove my desired deduction category, but this is now even worse. How can it be that QB Payroll fails to export to QBO?

Has anyone else noticed this? During my second call to QBO, I was told it's a "known issue that engineers are working on". I've heard that sort of line before but without a ticketing system, I don't have much confidence.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...this should be simple stuff.

I hear your sentiments, @slbradio.

I appreciate you letting us know you've performed some troubleshooting steps to get around the issue. I'll make sure you get the best help available so this gets sorted out immediately.

While the Community can provide answers and troubleshooting solutions to certain questions, there are things that only our phone support can do to resolve the problem.

In situations like this, we’ll have to review the setup of your QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QBO Payroll Core accounts. The process requires us to open your account, which I’m unable to perform here in the Community since this is a public forum and for security reasons.

That said, I recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team to check your account securely. I understand you've already contacted them multiple times. However, it would be best to reach out to them again. They have the proper tools to look into your account and investigate the reason why this occurs while trying to export your payroll data.

I've added this article for future reference about running payroll reports in QuickBooks Online: Run payroll reports. This will help you identify what specific report you're going to use to keep track of your books about payroll.

If you have any other concerns or questions about your payroll or QuickBooks, please let me know your reply. I'll be around to assist you. Keep safe!

Kevin, your answer is bewildering at best and would be insulting to many.

First, I spent over an hour in each of two sessions with your "official" support channels. Neither call was helpful at all; the first actually resulted in the loss of a "saved" payroll draft that I had to spend 90 minutes recreating. The second ultimately reported this is a known issue with know timetable to fix. He then told me to "use the gear to give feedback" since he could not offer any timetable for resolution or even a ticket number. The usual pacifier I get when a problem can't be solved.

Your response and links have *nothing* to do with my issue whatsoever. It's not an issue of exporting data to a report; it's one of exporting payroll data from *your* software to *your* software in a system *you* designed to be seamless and all-encompassing. For 10+ years, Intuit Online Payroll and it's agents served us flawlessly and resolved issues immediately and efficiently. QBO Payroll is a step down in reliability and support. I didn't come here to rant, but it's hard not to given your reply...and earlier attempts by your colleagues.

Hence, I turn to the user community. The best thing QBO has going for it at present is a large and experienced user base. I sincerely hope it isn't dwindling, but have concerns there as well.

QB Payroll Core: "Error while exporting transactions. Please try again later."

I understand this error has caused the delay in exporting your payroll, workha.

I'll provide you some basic troubleshooting steps so you can export your payroll transactions.

In the meantime, let's export your payroll transactions in a private window to test if the issue is browser-related. Sometimes local internet cache files stored in the system can cause unexpected behavior in the product. You can press the following keyboard shortcut keys to access incognito:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

If it works fine, we can clear the cache of your regular browser: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues. This helps remove any browser-related issues and refresh your browser's settings.

Aside from that, we can use other compatible browsers in QuickBooks Online.

  • Google Chrome: version 78 or newer
  • Mozilla Firefox: version 76 or newer.
  • Microsoft Edge: version 75 or newer
  • Safari: version 12 or newer (Mac only)
  • Opera: version 68 or newer
  • Samsung: version 10 or newer

For more details about moving your transactions, please see this article: Export Data.

If the error persists, I'd recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team to investigate the cause of this.

Additionally, I've added these articles that'll help you learn more about paying your employees:

You can always reply to this post if you need assistance managing and running payroll. It's always my pleasure to help you out.

I am having the same error. Have tried Safari and Chrome. Regular browser windows and private/incognito window. I have contacted QB Payroll Support 2x - I was told known issue but no estimated time to resolution, no follow up feedback on status. If I try to edit Export Preferences I get a blank window. I am trying to Export to QBO and not successful for the past 3 payrolls. Has any one heard of a solution or work around or another product that would successfully export payroll transactions to QBO?

Thanks for getting involved with this thread, Lori B.

If you're trying to export data from QuickBooks Desktop into QuickBooks Online, there's a few important things you'll want to check beforehand and be aware of:

  • QuickBooks Desktop needs to be up-to-date with its latest release.
  • You have up to 60 days from the day you create your QuickBooks Online account to move the data.
  • Your company file can't exceed a Total Target limit of 750,000 or higher.

You can find your current version and release by pressing F2 (or Ctrl + 1 simultaneously) to open the Product Information window. Intuit recommends having one of the following versions and releases (or higher) for greater success with exporting data into QuickBooks Online:

  • 2019 - R17
  • 2020 - R15
  • 2021 - R10
  • 2022 - R5

In the event it needs to be updated:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Help, then Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Update Now, then Get Updates.
  3. When it's finished, close and reopen QuickBooks.
  4. Select Yes to install the update.
  5. Once it's completed, restart your computer.

Since you're working with a QuickBooks Desktop Payroll subscription as well, also be sure to confirm you're using Intuit's latest payroll tax table.

To make sure your company file's Total Targets are less than 750,000, press the keyboard keys Ctrl + 1 simultaneously. If your file exceeds the target limit (750,000), data from it can't be converted to QuickBooks Online. The only option in this case would be to import lists and balances into QuickBooks Online, or start fresh.

In the event you're using QuickBooks Desktop 2018 or older, you'll need to utilize our QuickBooks Desktop file restoration tool to upgrade your file. Afterwards, you can move data into QuickBooks Online.

If you meet all of the requirements for moving data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online, but are still encountering a "Error while exporting transactions. Please try again later." message, I'd recommend initially troubleshooting with your Verify Data utility.

In the event you continue seeing this message each time you try moving data, you can also troubleshoot with Intuit's QuickBooks Tool Hub utility.

If you continue encountering the message after confirming you meet each of our requirements for moving data to QuickBooks Online and have completed the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up the account(s) in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

I've also included a detailed resource about moving data which may come in handy moving forward: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online

I'll be here to help if there's any additional questions. Have a great Tuesday!

QB Payroll Core: "Error while exporting transactions. Please try again later."

It took multiple calls, but I was finally able to resolve this. In my case, as a former Intuit Online Payroll  (IOP) user that was converted to QuickBooks Payroll (QP), the export functionality to QuickBooks Online (QBO) had to be connected by QuickBooks tech support. In short:

1. When I was converted from IOP to QP, the export mapping/link to QBO was also converted and established by QuickBooks. It was working as usual when I began using QP.

2. The export QP to QBO system broke after I had to make some changes to our mapping preferences. Symptoms were identical to yours (the blank window).

3. After multiple calls to QP, I finally found a first tier support person who kept me on the line as she spoke to the "back office" team as they re-established the export connection.

I think this is a known issue. Connecting QP to QBO should be user-implementable. With former IOP users, it appears to require intervention every time you make a change.

My problem has been resolved. I contacted support via phone - the support person was great. She got the problem logged and the right resources involved to investigate the problem. After doing a screen share and showing her and the "back end" support person what was happening, the Export function was "disconnected" and then we set up Exporting again and the transactions were then able to be exported from Payroll to QBO. I wish that she was the first person I connected with (she was the third call in for me - but I am very happy that she was able to resolve the problem.

The Export error started again month after being resolved. Multiple calls to QB Payroll support, even providing dates when the previous export problem was resolved, and it is still not working. I was told this is a known issue and I will get an email when it is resolved. I got an email with a resolution to a problem - but not my export issue? Will try calling again as I need to set up a new export category and not able to because I get a Blank Screen when trying to edit Export Preferences. I have been manually entering payroll transactions in to QB Online at and extra hour of time each pay period due to employees getting varying paycheck amounts due to overtime, temporary employees and holiday bonuses. Would a discount be in order for my client for the continued lack of functionality between to 2 Quickbooks products?

Thank you. I just contacted tech support and was transferred to payroll tech support. I showed the resolution outlined in this thread thru Glance screen recording and was told the problem would be resolved in 2-3 business days. I am hoping that may be the case as since November my weeks have been: payroll week spend extra hour entering payroll transactions in to QBO, non-payroll week spend extra hour with tech support.

Lori, my problem never got resolved for nearly two months! It took me calling and calling until I finally got ahold of a representative that determined my login was the issue!  We had to reenter the administrator's credentials. It was that simple and yet nobody could figure this out. Aggravating to say the least.

OK thank you. The administrator will call Intuit and see if that could be our issue. Got an email that my concern was resolved but running payroll today and export is still not working.

What is the status on getting this issue resolved?

I've been waiting on it for two weeks now. And, I can't do our taxes until this is resolved.

This is a ripple effect that doesn't just effect our business, but our employees, partners and contractors, too.

Hello, Nickie.

I can only imagine how affected your employees, business partners, and contractors are on the current issue. I would also become worried since we're talking about taxes here, and the deadlines are just around the corner.

At the time of this reply, our engineers are still working and investigating the issue. As mentioned by my JessT, you'll be receiving an update through the email attached to your case.

I see that you've already called us before. I would still recommend contacting our phone support if you have additional questions or need to add more details about the issue.

We can give the investigation or case number to the next agent. They can also look up the status and give you updates if needed.

This reply was posted 4 weeks ago and the problem has still not been resolved. I received an email that the problem was resolved but it has not! This has been an issue for us since November 2022. It takes extra time each pay period to manually enter the payroll transactions for employee's, many of whom have different hours each pay period,  tax amounts change, some deductions change so a simple cut and paste doesn't work for 1/3 to 1/2 of them each pay period. Please confirm this problem is still being worked on?

Thanks for getting back here in the thread, @Lori B. I'll share some updates about your query on not being able to complete your payroll tasks in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Before anything else, know that I understand the urgency of this matter, and I want to ensure this gets resolved as soon as possible.  I've checked here on my resources, and yes, our engineers are still working on it, and you'll receive an email update once it's fixed and troubleshooting is available on our end.

I have the same issue the past couple weeks and your payroll support are largely idiots. I've called about this and was told they would look into it and get back to me, heard nothing for 2 weeks.  Was on a chat with someone a couple days ago, they left the chat.  It seems your employees are well versed on blowing us off when they have no clue.  As if I have time to chase an issue that is squarely YOUR issue.  You guys should be aware of this and fix it rather than making us call a bunch of time and go through a 20 process to learn absolutely nothing.  I've attached my chat for reference.
