Will QB have the Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance payroll deduction available Jan 1, 2023?

Hello;

I've been working with QB for the past six weeks trying to get the FAMLI tax created. The amounts defaulted in QB are incorrect and can't be changed. I was told last week they were working on it. Today I've been on two chats with screen shares and both disconnected after 45 minutes.  I need to process paying within twenty minutes. Anyone have a solution?  We have less the nine employees so the rate should be .45% for employees and 0% for employers. The rate defaults at 50% (not .50%) for employees. When I try to change the rate to .45%, it changes the employer's rate to 5%. And it's .45%, not 45%.

it was confirmed to me by a payroll staff member of QB that the rates are not correct in QB (showing .9% for each employee and employer. The rate should be .45% on the payroll item list and .00% for employers if less than 9. and .45% if more than 10 employees. And the employee only pays .45%

We have a hold-off on payroll until the 12th of January for QB to send new payroll updates. No manual entries can be made.

Is this correct or is there another way to process payroll this week?

or do we skip the first payroll - and if so - can we go back and add what they have?

Let's make sure you'll be able to create the FAMLI tax, Kris Colton.

Generally,  you'll get disconnected with your chat if you have issues with your internet connection. You'll want to make sure that both shouldn't be idle for several minutes. Sometimes, this is one of  the reasons why it gets disconnected.

On the other hand, as @GiovanniG mentioned, Our payroll compliance team is now working on adding these additional tax items, You should be able to get an email alerts with step-by-step instructions in setting the Colorado Paid Family Leave tax details in payroll.

If you're not receiving any updates, I recommend reaching out to our support team so then can double-check this further. They have the tools to pull up your account in a secure environment. Here's how:

  1. Click the (?) Help icon and enter Talk to a human (then type it again when prompted).
  2. When asked by the bot, enter your concern
  3. Select I still need a human, then proceed with Contact us or Get help from a human.
  4. Choose either Chat or Callback.

In addition, QuickBooks offers wide range of payroll reports that you can use to view useful information about your business and employees, To know more about this, check this out: Run Payroll Reports In QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Please let us know if you have any other concerns a about the FAMLI tax. We're here to get you covered.

Today is January 2.  I just prepared a payroll and the new Colorado Family Leave tax is not calculating at all.  It also shows that both the employee and employer amounts should calculate at .9% which is incorrect.  How do I get this to calculate properly?

update: The Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program (FAMLI) is already available in both QB Desktop Payroll and QBO Payroll. Just follow the steps in the mentioned article for detailed steps.

Hi Cheri58,

As of the moment, we're still working to finalize this tax, so stay tuned for some updates. If you haven't already, please contact our QBO Support, so they can add notes to your account about the Colorado Family Leave tax. In this way, they'll be aware that you've already run payroll this day.

If you have other questions in mind, feel free to go back to this thread.

This is unbelievably frustrating.  We've known this is coming for a year, and yet intuit still doesn't have it running correctly as of the 1st of the year?

I use both QBO and QBD.  The QBO set up was easy.  The desktop version is the problem.  As other's have stated, qbd didn't give us the option to input the % rates ourselves.   Now that they've entered it incorrectly, they don't give us the ability to correct it.

If you have to run payroll immediately, the workaround is to go into each employee record and enter the rates individually.  Click on your employee, choose payroll info, click on the Taxes tab.  Then choose Other.  Both employer and employee payroll items should be listed.  You'll need to add .45% for each, unless the company is paying the entire thing.

I GOT IT TO WORK!!
3 hours with support ( Thank you Rosabella!)

This is for QuickBooks online.
Payroll settings
Colorado Tax
Add FAMLI deduction and make sure it says active.

Now you need to update ALL employees. It's not like UITR where it auto populates all employees.

Select Employee
Tax Withholding
Just below State Assign Policy (This opens a tab with drop down) Select FAMLI
Save and Save again.

I ran a payroll and it showed for employee and employer

Becky -

I'm so glad you got it to work!

It's a DEBAUCLE that you have to go into each employee record for a withholding that is REQUIRED by the state (just like unemployment).  You can't pick and choose a percentage for each employee.  I have over 250 employees and it's going to take hours and hours.  Can you imagine large companies with hundreds of employees?  I guess those companies would be smart enough to not be using quickbooks.

I agree!  This was not what I expected!  I, too, have over 250 employees and had to go into each one separately.  It took a full day!

hello, QB automatically inputted the % to be deducted, however it is wrong.  It should be 0.45% for employee and 0.45% for employer, however QB as 0.90% for both which is double the amount required.  how do I change this?

Thanks

FAMLI is a post tax deduction. I was excited to try this but it is calculating as a pre tax deduction.

I too am very frustrated.

I understand internet issues; however, I would have expected to receive an email or call asking if the problem was resolved.  I've had five screen shares yesterday and today and the problem still isn't fixed.

Does Anyone know the setup for just the employer to pay the .45%?  I keep getting .5% for Employees and .45% for Employer. We have 4 Employees.

No solution yet. I finally reached someone yesterday who actually repeated the rates to me and the fact that I can't correct the rate. Today, I cannot access the rates at all. I am hoping this means they are working on the problem. I had to run payroll without the tax.  One of the reps told me I need to run a zero paycheck when the issue is resolved.  I explained that funds are actually taken from the employee's pay so it can't be a zero paycheck. I haven't gotten an answer on that either.  The last of the five screen shares I completed, I asked for the call/chat to be escalated as I couldn't get the rep to understand what I was telling him/her. That's when I reached a person who finally understood what I was saying. I would recommend asking for the escalation.

Will QB have the Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance payroll deduction available Jan 1, 2023?

Hi,

So I set up the new paid Family Leave when Quickbooks prompted me to do so. Having some issues though.

The total tax to pay is.9% split between employee and employer, but when I pull it up in the "Payroll item list" under the AMOUNT column it is showing 0.9 for both employer and employee. Maybe I did something wrong so I thought I could just delete the item and start over...but no, QB states "This payroll item is used in employee records. It cannot be deleted." YIKES! What do I do now? I have not run payroll in January yet.

Also, ran a mock payroll test and $0.00 was recorded in both the employee deduction and the employer contribution. It should have deducted something right?

I do have my account numbers as I had registered in December and I recorded them in QB's as well as the name of the agency receiving the tax.

Another issue...sorry I have two companies that I use QB for and ran mock payroll in both companies. In one company the payroll item appeared both in the employee summary and the company summary (still zero for the amount though), but in the other company it does not appear in the employee summary. I did verify that it is listed as a payroll item in the payroll item list.

Hope you can help.

lol replying to my own post....

I FIGURED IT OUT!

I don't use quickbooks online, so this may be slightly different but should make some sense.

Each employee needs to be added individually.

GO TO EMPLOYEE CENTER

select an employee

select payroll info

select taxes

select other

you should be able to see the item name CO - Paid fam med leave co. as well as CO-paid fam med leave emp.

select one and a box below gives you an option to enter the rate

do this for both items

Thank you so much for this information! Why QB didn't explain this last step in their "help" section on setting up CO Paid FML is ridiculous!

For some reason, I only have the company portion of the CO FAMLI tax as an option to choose for each employee individually. Both the company and the employee are items on the payroll list - and they are active, so why isn't the employee portion available from the drop-down list.  And, as many others have said, the amounts of the tax are wrong also. Since I run payroll bi-weekly, for now I am planning to deduct the tax only every second paycheck of the month, since I run a small payroll. However, I won't be able to do that in two weeks when I run payroll again, unless I can figure out why the employee portion is not available to choose.

PLEASE ADVISE!

Thanks for joining us here in this thread, @c4ring1

Ideally, the option to choose an employee is available when setting up CO FAMILI. You'll want to browse this link for reference: Set up Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program (FAMLI).

We're here to help. However, please understand that we have limited access here in the Community, and therefore we would normally route issues that can't be resolved here to our phone or chat teams. That way, they can look into your QBO company and use more tools to investigate the issue.

It's best to contact our Phone or Chat teams so that they can check this further. They should be able to tell you if this needs to be investigated. They can do a screen-sharing session, and therefore would be able to determine a workaround in case they need more time to check this further.

Here's how:

  1. Tap on the Help at the top menu bar.
  2. Click on the Contact Us button.
  3. In the What can we help you with? box, provide a brief description of the problem.
  4. Press on Let's talk.
  5. Tap on Get a callback.
  6. Type in your contact details, then tap on Confirm my call.

Additionally, I'm sharing this link that can help you handle taxes: Manage taxes in QuickBooks.

Please know that I'll just be around here in the Community if you needed any help. Have a good one and take care always!

Do new policies have to be created when the employee number fluctuates between 9 and 10 regularly? Some businesses have high turn over within the percentage calculated range. One payroll might be 8 employees and 4 payrolls later there could be 12 employees. Please describe how to handle these type of situations. Editing is not an option because the effective date is greyed out and changing the percentage could cause retro adjusting errors.
