Is there a way to avoid getting error messages when making tax payments through QuickBooks? I am in private browsing mode. Thanks.

Hi there, aedelm.

We received an update that users should update their EFTPS credentials before making payments through QuickBooks.

If you haven't done it yet, I'd suggest updating them to get rid of the error messages. Once done, try making a payment after an hour.

You should be able to make a payment without getting an error message.

Please follow the instructions on the EFTPS website to update your password: https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/direct/FAQGeneral.page#getPassword.

Keep me posted with the results. I want to make sure this is taken care of.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't receive a message about updating my credentials in EFTPS, so I appreciate the alert. After doing that, I waited more than an hour and made a payment. This time I didn't receive an error message, but rather an alert that said, verbatim, "Well this is taking a while," and that I should receive a confirmation that my payment goes through. Thanks again.

Hi there,

I also had this problem when I tried to submit a payment (but thankfully I found this question!) Under "Pending EFTPS Payments", it still lists my current attempt to pay, but that it had an EFTPS error. I just updating my password with EFTPS, but my question is will the pending payment go through, or should I hit pay now (after an hour) to submit a new payment? I don't want to accidentally pay twice. Thank you!

Thanks for joining this conversation, @CaitlynEJ.

You're seeing the "Pending EFTPS Payments" in the QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) Quarterly Taxes page, correct? If so, there's no need to hit the Pay Now option again. The status will automatically update once the payment has cleared your bank.

Additionally, the payment is processed immediately after you submit it electronically. It may take 5-7 days for the payment to post to your EFTPS payment history log. To learn more about the process, consider checking out this article: Pay Federal Estimated Quarterly Taxes.

Please let me know in the comment if you have any other issues or concerns, and I'll get back to you as quick as possible. I'm always here to help. Have a great weekend!

Hi y'all,

I just attempted submitting my payment three times before I found this thread (probably should have looked for this first...), each time getting the "EFTPS Payment error". Is there any way I can delete these so that they don't update and go through when I update my info on EFTPS.gov?

Hello there, Viegon.

Once the EFTPS payment got rejected, rest assured that it won't go through even if you'll update your credentials with EFTPS.

You can update the PIN and password through https://www.eftps.gov/eftps/. Once done, let's go ahead and reprocess the payment in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Comment again if you need anything else. Have a great day!

For what it's worth, I updated my profile on EFTPS and attempted to make a payment on Quickbooks, only to receive the error message, "payment not submitted." I might have to make payments directly through EFTPS at this point.

Thanks for updating your profile in the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) website, aedelm.

The EFTPS change the password requirements to enhance their security. Once you updated your EFTPS password, try submitting payments after an hour or two again.

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest contacting our QuickBooks Self-Employed Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and trace what's causing the payment rejection.

Just check out this article to reach out to them: Contact QuickBooks Self-Employed Support.

In the meantime, you can process the payments directly on the EFTPS website.

Thanks for the update. I will contact QuickBooks support during business hours and either have an online chat or request a call, because I've followed all the steps mentioned here to no avail. I don't know if there's an issue with my account in particular. Anyway, I wish I had better news, but I figured I'd provide an update in case anyone has a situation similar to mine. Thanks again.

Hi @FritzF, Thanks for answering my question. Just to clarify, if it says "payment error", but I've updated my EFTPS credentials, it should still clear in 5-7 days? Or should I keep checking daily to see if it hasn't been processed yet?

I appreciate your help!

I’d be glad to assist you on behalf of my colleague, @CaitlynEJ.

About that pop-up notification about payment error, your payment did not go through. In that case, even when you have already updated your EFTPS credentials. You can do it again after an hour to check if you still have that prompted message.

Also, if the same thing happened after doing it, I suggest contacting support so that they can perform screen sharing.

For future reference, please check this article about Federal Estimated Quarterly Taxes.

Please comment below if you have other concerns. I’ll be around to help. Have a good one.

How do you cancel/delete/remove a pending payment (due to EFTPS payment error)???

I have already paid over the phone with EFTPS directly.  I don't want the pending payment to go through.  I want to cancel/delete/remove it now.  How do I do that, please?

I'm here to make sure you get the right support, @rhpdaddy.

For you to know if the pending payment can be canceled or deleted, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Self-Employed Support team. They can pull up your account and check if they can cancel your pending payment.

Here's how to contact QuickBooks Self-Employed Support team:

You can connect with them through live chat, over the phone, or with a community of other self-employed users on both mobile and the web.

  1. Go to Assistant from the top bar.
  2. Connect with us directly, type or say “Talk to a human.”
  3. Select your preferred support method: Message an agent (Live chat), Call an agent, or Get a callback. Keep in mind, some options are only available at certain times.

Note: The wait time for agents is about 5 minutes.

I'm always at your back if you need further assistance. Have a good day!
