Converting from Quickbooks Pro 2012 to Newer Desktop Version on Windows 11 PC

I had to replace my 8 year old computer with a new one.  The old one was Windows 10 and was able to handle my old Quickbooks Pro 2012 software.  My new one is Windows 11 and apparently will not accommodate this software.  I am close to retirement and will be shutting down my use of the software in a couple of years.  The online version seems a little pricey for my expected tenure and the complexity of my company (I run payroll on Gusto with 1 employee).  Therefore, I seeking to purchase a non-subscription version of Quickbooks that will work on the new Windows 11 computer and also be able to convert the Quickbooks Pro 2012 files.

I can't seem to find any documentation concerning the various years and versions of the desktop version to confirm which will successfully convert the old Quickbooks Pro 2012 files.  Can anyone assist in letting me know which years and versions will do this?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Todd R

Converting from Quickbooks Pro 2012 to Newer Desktop Version on Windows 11 PC

I appreciate you for posting here in the Community space, Todd. I'm here to assist you with your concern about upgrading to a newer desktop version for your Windows 11 PC.

QuickBooks Desktop's newer versions support the Windows 11 operating system but for 64-bit only. However, the recent versions are only for the annual subscription type.

Here is the list of recent versions that support Windows 11:

  • QuickBooks Desktop 2022 R3 or later.
  • QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2023 and Enterprise 23.0.
  • QuickBooks Pro or Premier 2024 and Enterprise 24.0.

QuickBooks Desktop 2021 and its earlier versions offer a non-subscription-based type for users. However, it doesn't support the Windows 11 operating system.

If you want to convert your company file from your QuickBooks Pro 2012 to a newer version, you'll need to back up your company files and transfer them to your new PC:

  1. Open QuickBooks Pro 2012.
  2. On the top menu, select File and hover over Back Up Company.
  3. Select Create Local Backup.
  4. Choose the Local Backup option and click OK.

Do these to all company files you own and save them to your local file. After that, transfer it to your new PC using a flash drive or upload it to an online cloud-based storage, then download it to your new PC.

The next step is to restore the backup files to your new PC after downloading the newer QuickBooks Desktop version. Save the company files to your local storage, then open it with QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu in QuickBooks and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  3. Select Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
  6. Select Save.

@ToddSki

You can purchase QB Desktop 2024 Pro Plus to upgrade your version. You have to call Sales team to purchase it. Another option, you can contact selected partners to purchase it tax exempt, no credit card required, and can get $100 cashback.

You may also need to upgrade your data gradually. You can use the trial version of QB Desktop 2015, 2019 and 2021.

I googled and it says quickbooks desktop 2021 are compatible with windows 11, why are you stating otherwise?

Allow me to dive into this thread concerning QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) compatibility requirements, @DLCFencing.

My colleague, MarkAngeloG, is correct about the inability of QBDT 2021 to operate on Windows 11. The mentioned version of the application only operates on the following Windows servers:

  • Windows 10, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows 8.1, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows Server 2019, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2016, Standard and Essentials

If you currently have Windows 11, you may also consider upgrading to higher versions of QBDT, as QuickBooks Desktop 2021 software will be discontinued by May 31, 2024. To upgrade, you can refer to this article for complete guidelines:  Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Let me know if you have additional questions about system requirements or the compatibility of the application. The Community always has your back. Take care!

@DLCFencing

You should be able to run QBD 2021 on Win 11 but we also found many reports to the contrary. What is your experience?
