Opening a Company file located on a network drive

I have a 3 user copy of QB Premier 2020 (Contractor Edition) and have been using a Company file located on a my computer with another copy on another computer on the same network. but the other computer runs so slowly accessing the co. file from my computer I have moved the company file to an external hard drive connected via USB to my Nighthawk router. I have been able to get the file to work in single user mode from both computers but if I try to switch to Multi-user mode I get error "H202 This company file is located on another computer and QuickBooks needs some help connecting. .

Here's how to fix this problem

On the computer where the company file is located open... QuickBooks Database Server Manager. The database server manager will scan your files and restore the connection."

Obviously this cannot be done since the Company file is not located on a "Computer" but rather is located on a hard drive "on" the router.

anybody know how to deal with this?

I appreciate for sharing the details with me, Glen.

I'd be glad to help you get around the error you received in opening your company file.

The error H202 will prompt when your company file is located on another computer and need some connection. To isolate this issue, You'll want to ensure your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software is updated to the latest release. This way, we can ensure the program is packed with the newest features and fixes. Let me show you how.

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Go to the Update Now tab.
  4. Select Get Updates to start the download.
  5. When the download finishes, restart QuickBooks.
  6. Then accept the option to install the new release.

You can also check this link for more details: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

If this not the case, I recommend copying or moving your company file to your computer hard drive. Let me also add this article that you can use for additional troubleshooting steps : How to fix Error H202 and H505.

I'm also add these links that you can utilize for future tasks. These can walk you through the steps on how to back up and restore your company file from other computers:

Quickbooks is up to date on both PC's I am using to access this file

As I mentioned this file is on a network drive and we do not want to move it to a PC

You have ignored my question

Why wouldn't you get someone who actually knows the answer to my question rather than ignore the question hoping that updating will fix it. If you don't know the answer just say so and then find someone to help you who does know... Would you please see if someone has solved this issue, Please?

Can you please have a supervisor look at my question...

Opening a Company file located on a network drive

Hi there, GlenBurton2010.

I appreciate you for letting us know your QuickBooks is up to date. The information shared will guide us on the next steps we’ll have to perform to open the company file.

We’ll have to run the QuickBooks Tool Hub to resolve the error and then perform the troubleshooting in the main drive or server. Let me guide you on how to download the utility.

  1. Make sure to close QuickBooks.
  2. Next, download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Then, save the file where you can easily find it.
  4. Next, open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  5. Follow the on-screen steps to install it.
  6. Once done, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool.

To run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the server:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub screen, tap the Network Issues menu on the left panel.
  2. Pick QuickBooks Database Server Manager. If QuickBooks isn’t on your server, it'll prompt you to install it.
  3. Inside the QuickBooks Database Server Manager, choose Start Scan if you see your company file folder(s).
  4. If you don't, browse to the location of the company file and then select Start Scan.
  5. The QuickBooks Database Server Manager will repair your firewall permissions automatically.
  6. When the scan finishes, hit Close.
  7. Open QuickBooks on each workstation where you see Error H202.
  8. Choose File and Switch to Multi-user Mode.

If the issue persists, perform Solutions 3-6 in the following guide. From the article, you can also get the download link for the QuickBooks Tool Hub: How to fix Error H202 and H505.

For additional resources, these articles contain solutions on how to resolve if you’re unable to open the company file and other multi-user issues.

Don’t hesitate to leave a comment below if you have additional questions about QuickBooks. I’ll get back to answer them for you. Have a good one.

Opening a Company file located on a network drive

Hello there, rad6.

I'm here to hare information about NAS compatibility with QuickBooks Desktop.

NAS is no longer applicable for the later versions of QuickBooks Desktop like Enterprise 2019 to host in multi-user.

To get the best experience, we use the QuickBooks Desktop Database Server Manager in a multi-user setup for QuickBooks Desktop. You may take a look at our system requirements.

You can also check out this article about specific types of networks you can use to run QuickBooks: Recommended networks for QuickBooks.

So storing the quickbooks data file on the NAS is not supported?!   We have to store it locally and run the database server?

So are you saying we can not store the company file on a NAS server?

@bkoehn

A network drive (NAS) should not be used to host the multi-user Company file. QuickBooks will not work reliably and may give H505 or other errors. This is because the QuickBooks database manager needs to run on the same computer hosting the Company file. A 3rd party solution can be used if users in one of the shared locations need to use QuickBooks in multi-user configuration. The folder containing the Company file can be hosted on a server. It can also be hosted on a peer computer by using the Windows drive mapping technique to emulate a network drive on the peer computer, as required by that 3rd party solution.
