Quickbooks 21 failed to fully uninstall after installing 22

I installed the new Quickbooks 2022 on two Remote Desktop Servers. When I performed the installation, I did not uninstall 2021. Later, I performed the uninstall, however on both servers, the uninstall process took over an hour, on both servers, and I finally exited out of it. Now 2021 seems to be partially uninstalled. Under Control Panel, I still see 21, but when I go to uninstall, it says it can not find the uninstall file. The icon appears broken. And the icons under the Start Menu for Quickbooks 21 still appears to be there.

Are there steps to completely remove 21 after a failed installation?

Quickbooks 21 failed to fully uninstall after installing 22

Hello, James.

I'll show you how to uninstall QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

There may be hundreds of files to be deleted that's why uninstalling a program may take longer. Some files may have been corrupt if you exit during the process. Please restart the server computer to apply the changes.

If the issue persists, you can download and install QuickBooks Tool Hub. This helps fix some QuickBooks Desktop issues including problems uninstalling the software.

Here's how:

  1. Download QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  2. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  3. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  4. When the installation finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  5. Once the tool hub is already open, select the Installation issues and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process.

For your reference, you can review this article for more details: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub

In addition, I've included this resource for the complete guide on uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.

Quickbooks 21 failed to fully uninstall after installing 22

Installed the QuickBooks Tool Hub

Went to Installation Issues

And I am running into the  same thing as when I was trying to run the Uninstall. I have this "Please wait while we configure this for you ..." and it's been running for over an hour.

Quickbooks 21 failed to fully uninstall after installing 22

I first got everyone to log off, and rebooted the server.

I installed the QuickBooks Tool Hub

Went to Installation Issues

And it has been stuck on "Please wait while we configure this for you ..." for two hours.

Quickbooks 21 failed to fully uninstall after installing 22

Hi jroper73!

Thanks for the reply. Let me further assist you in uninstalling the QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

Let's manually rename the installation folders. This can help us in uninstalling it.

  1. Display hidden files.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu, then search and open File Explorer.
  3. Find and open the folder that holds your QuickBooks company files.
    • C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)
    • C:\Users\(current user)\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)
    • 64-bit version C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks (year)
  4. Right-click the folder and select Rename.
  5. Add the word "old" at the end of the folder name.

If the same thing happens, please reach out to our Technical Team for investigation:

  1. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Enter "Uninstall", select Let's talk and then choose a way to connect.
