Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Just finished 2020 books on a "Numbers" spreadsheet.  Exported it to XCEL and emailed to our accountant.  Couldn't have been easier.  And at ZERO cost.  He will take my totals and make a few General Journal entries and I'm done.

Also dumped TurboTax last year for personal returns.   Exact same cost as using our accountant to file returns.  No more downloads and INTUIT customer service.

Let me share some information, Gory523.

The Big Sur 11.0 version  is under beta testing. It's not yet compatible with QuickBooks for MAC 2015. It means that we're unable to test the software in the new operating system.

Some features may not run correctly. You'll want to go back to the old operating system while we're working on Big Sur.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Saw this thread continues so I'll post again. The latest versions of QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019, 2020, and 2021 are all compatible with Big Sur. The updates are free - just run QuickBooks->Check for Updates from within QuickBooks.  If QB won't launch (because you installed Big Sur before updating QB) then you can download the current 2019, 2020, and 2021 from Intuit's download site.  There's no charge for any of this but you do need a valid 2019, 2020 or 2021 license.

The 2016 and earlier versions are no longer supported. But the 2016 version may run on Big Sur - you should first upgrade it to the most recent version or try re-installing it.  Sometime during the 2016 version's life Apple stopped supporting a form of memory management that the application used (this occurred in the Catalina macOS release). So make sure you have the latest version of 2016 as we updated it to support that.

The 2015 and earlier versions won't run because of Catalina and Big Sur won't allow them to launch as Apple stopped supporting their previously recommended memory management scheme.

Let me provide you some information about the updates, NWG2020.

As mentioned by @IntuitBrooks reply, you'll be able to use the latest versions of QuickBooks Desktop  for Mac 2019, 2020, and 2021 with Big Sur. However, outdated versions are no longer supported, that's why it's best to upgrade to the most recent versions so that you'll be able to use QuickBooks.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

So let me provide you with some information.  This is a business model that Quickbooks follows, forcing either a monthly subscription or spending $500 on a software update.   An update that will only last 2 to 3 years before forcing another software update.   I have been running the same programs on MacBook Pro since 2013.  All other software updates from Apple, Adobe, and a half dozen other companies provide free and timely updates and those  systems all work perfectly just as we purchased them to do.   Quickbooks, Intuit, Turbotax while at one time great have turned into hacks and will continue to lose their customer base.

For those users of Quickbooks 2016 there will never be an update to work on Big Sur.  Only option is either to spend more money conveniently for Intuit, a nice revenue stream, or to find a more stable, reliable solution.  Different more reliable accounting program.

For those of you that do purchase Quickbooks 2021, that program will only run for 2 years.  They (Intuit) should make that known to the purchaser.  This product expires in 2023!

Thank you very much. Finally after these many AI responses, what appears to be human. Here's the issue. Yes, I know that at some point Intuit will create a new version to work on Big Sur. My complaint is that I can't re-load my 2016 software even on my older imac (now that I'm cut off until the magic day comes). The point is that I bought the software, it still works, and ethically I should be able to continue using it on the computer I bought it for. I'm sure that dozens of lawyers have created fine print that I "accepted" when I bought it. It's just a way to trick people though isn't it? Even Adobe allows an older version to continue to run in the event of an OS failure. Quickbooks does not. This, to me, is no different than robbing me. It's a con game. I've still got one computer that runs the 2016 and I'm fine using it. And if any other vendors decide to get into this market, I will take a look at those. Eventually I may buy the Big Sur version. But I won't ever have a good feeling of working with Intuit and buying your products. And since no one at Intuit seems to care what the Mac Community thinks, there it is.

I agree! I am getting ready to do my taxes and had no idea that they were not compatible.  The answer that it may be available in a 'week or two' is not acceptable.

Sorry but this is not an adequate answer - as large as your company is, you didn't know that Mac was working on a new OS.  Tax time for me and I can't get into QB 2015.  Going back to an earlier version of Mac is not an option.

If you think this is a nightmare DON'T try QBO. Added payroll aspect and it was a disaster.  Shame on Intuit.  If and when there is another company that does accounting - I am gone.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

We updated 2021, 2020, and 2019 to support Big Sur. These updates are not trivial. You can continue to run older versions on the macOS versions that they support.

Old software doesn't always continue to work as Apple releases new macOS versions. This isn't the fault of the old software - its Apple that has broken the software with their changes in the new macOS. They are very aware that this is occurring and have decided to do it anyway.

2015 doesn't launch because Apple won't allow it to.  It uses Apple's older memory management and Apple's library code for that memory management is no longer present. Apple decided on a new technology that also works on iOS.  We rewrote QB Mac 2016 for that to support macOS Catalina. If you have 2016 you can try downloading the latest version - it likely will launch on BigSur.   But it will probably have some issues - its best to run a version that is qualified for Big Sur (2019, 2020, and 2021).  We worked for months on getting those versions to run on Big Sur.

It took a long time to test and update each version of  QuickBooks to work on Big Sur. We can't update all the older versions - in many cases the development tools we used will no longer even work on Big Sur.

We do our best to provide updates as long as the software is supported. I have a lot of old software that no longer runs on Big Sur - my own strategy for dealing with it is running a VMWare Virtual Machine with an older version of macOS installed in it.  But I only do that for things I can't upgrade. And I have to update VMWare with each macOS release because VMWare is subject to the same issues.

Apple provides their software largely for free and sells hardware. The copy of Mail you get when you update to Big Sur isn't the same copy of Mail you used in Catalina or Yosemite.  The Mail from those earlier versions won't run on Big Sur.  Its just you don't notice it because Apple ships most of these apps with the OS itself. However at some point Apple no longer allows the new macOS to be installed on older hardware.

Adobe runs on a subscription model so they update their apps for the new macOS as part of that subscription.

Anyway - if you want to run QuickBooks Mac on Big Sur you should be running 2021, 2020, or 2019 as those are supported.

All of that being said why not offer software updates that will work on BigSur.

ie... Dear valued consumer,  your software you bought, paid for and use on a daily basis will not work after your iOS update.   Please download the latest version on our website free of charge and thank you for being a valued customer.

Not sorry about your luck, please downgrade your iOS for our software to work.    Or go spend another $500 on Quickbooks/MAC 21'.    How long will Quickbooks/Mac 21 work?   Just long enough for the next  iOS from Apple.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Hi there, @jdzanecat

Let me assist you with backing up your company file.

Here are possible reasons why QuickBooks won't open and how we can fix it:

  • Your company name is too long
  • There's a damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file
  • You may have corruption on your hard drive
  • Your program files or QuickBooks Desktop installation may be damaged
  • You may have a damaged Windows operating system

To resolve this, let's run the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Here's how:

  1. Download and install the QuickBooks Tools Hub.
  2. In the QuickBooks Tool Hub, choose Program Problems.
  3. Click the Quick Fix my Program.
  4. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

If the issue persists, let's use the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool. This automatically diagnoses and fixes issues with Microsoft components.

  1. Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  2. In the Tool Hub, choose Program Problems.
  3. Click QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool. It can take up to 20 minutes.
  4. When the tool finishes, restart your computer and relaunch QuickBooks.

For more details, please review this article: Solutions for when QuickBooks has stopped working.

If everything works, you can start creating a backup copy of your file. Then, install the newer version of QuickBooks.

That should do it. Keep me posted if you need more help. Take care and stay healthy.

I'll share a solution to help you run the QuickBooks Desktop program, @EricV-ville.

Since QuickBooks will not open, let's download the latest maintenance release by following these steps:

  1. Tap the QuickBooks drop-down to select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, choose Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens when the update is complete.

Once done, try to open your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Hello QB will NOT OPEN AT ALL therefore you can't "Tap the QuickBooks drop-down to select check for updates" It does not open at all...

Try holding down the option key when you launch QuickBooks. This prevents it from opening your company file. If that allows you to launch it you can run QuickBooks->Check for Updates.  Then you can apply the update and try opening your file.

If you can't get it to launch even holding down the option key download the latest version of QuickBooks from Intuit's support site and re-install.  That will get you to the latest version.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

Hey there,

Are there any updates to this ?. I have QB 2020 (Mac) and I also noticed that I was prevented from using the software with Big Sur. I am noticing in the language, that the first update was not compatible with quickbooks, but now that Apple has updated the software a few times; I am wondering if this lock out has been fixed.

Thanks for following up on this thread, @AliveHolisticCounseling.

Let me provide you the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac running on macOS 11 Big Sur updates.

Computers update their OS every few years to advance their performance. Also, Apple recently released macOS v10.15 a few times. As my colleague, Angelyn_T mentioned above the compatible versions of macOS is Mac 2021 R32020 R6

If you already have these versions, then you're able to run the QBDT Mac with Big Sur. The R3 and R9 versions fix the macOS Big Sur 11 and general concern.

I'd also encourage you to visit this article about how to handle the new macOS, Catalina: Risk of data file corruption and data loss for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac users who attempt to run Q...

Additionally, to learn more about how to resolve a performance issue, check out this page: Resolve QuickBooks Desktop performance issues: Manage your data file.

How to I look to see which version I have. I know that I have 2019 QB Mac desktop, but I don't know if it is "R9". I am also having another issue where I am trying to re download the install file from my digital locker at Amazon (where I purchased the original software). When I download it to my newer computer, I am not able to run the initial installation - it says "disk busy". So I need help to troubleshoot this too.

This is all so difficult, I wish it were more straightforward to be using Quickbooks desktop software.

Quickbooks Won't Open After Big Sur Update

 Hi,

On my Mac Desktop Pro I  get the Update notification that it is not compatible with the new iOS.

I had already updated to Big Sur before finding out that Mac Desktop Pro 2016 does not work with it.

Bottom line, what are the steps required to download the supported version and is it really going to work and not corrupt my file?

i.e.

1. Purchase a newer version or run the update program?

2. Somehow backup the file or retrieve from a previous file?

Please answer so that it is not confusing as some previous comments states that things are working and then further down it states it is not working and try downgrading to a previous MacOS version.

Thank you!
