Get 50% OFF QuickBooks for 3 months*
Buy nowSo I just went through this nightmare myself - we had an old laptop which we used our 2008 QB pro (3 licenses, btw, but we only have been using it on one computer). The laptop crashed, and we re-installed QB on another computer - a desktop. Anyway, we were getting this same message and I called to register because it could not be done online and met with a brick wall. "So sorry - we no longer support and therefore no longer can register." I found this thread and got my hopes up that I just had an unhelpful rep on the phone and logged in and chatted with Jane M. got another hard stop. After much back and forth in the chat where I even copied and pasted the moderator's replies here (which infer that help is possible), she abruptly cut off the chat. Sorry not sorry - basically! I continued to click through replies in this thread and I came across a link to troubleshoot activation/license issue and found this:
[LINK: Fix activation, license, and product numbers issues]
I did this and inputting the zeros and closing out (through step 3) bought me another 30 days! LOL, so I figured, I'll just have to go in once a month and input the license and the following month do the zeroes, etc. However, I'm sure there's some limit there also...? Anyway, the point is, I continued with the next two steps and input the license number again, as well as the validation code (which thankfully, we had saved), and it APPEARS to be working just fine. I guess time will tell if the message to register will repopulate (giving us 29 days as of tomorrow)...But for now, I THINK it worked because previously it would prompt the registration mandate every time we opened the program (and not just once a day), but I could be remembering incorrectly. I pray it's resolved, and if it is, I hope this helps someone in the future. I can't imagine there are too many of us clinging to our old software like this but for those us who are - Godspeed!
Thank you Lulaesq
Unfortunately my 2010/11 version does not have the option of Help, Manage my license, then Change my license number
You can purchase QB Desktop 2016 or 2017 to upgrade your version.
Why should I have to purchase another version.
I have purchased and paid for the version I have and should be bale to continue to use it however Reckon Australia refuse to activate the version I have
A license is simply permission to use something. You never own the product. That's why a developer can refuse to reactivate the license at any time.
the other issues I am in Australia and purchased the software from Reckon in Australia. The 2016 US software will not open my file
You need a 3rd party service to open your file on QuickBooks Reckon or convert it to QuickBooks Intuit.
not worth the costs or effort

I'm replying to my old post because I need to update my statement and let QB know what happened.
I have since moved to Win10(from win7), I was able to get my 2008 Pro to work.
What happened years ago was that when I went to instal the software it prompted me to call QB. I had written down a code on the cd cover and labeled it "V code". I did this years before, the day I installed it after buying it new. Back then I called the number, then they told me to press Cntrl+R+P , then they gave me a Validation code to enter. They told me to hang onto the code. This is something any user would forget about after 10 years. It's a shame the software doesn't prompt the installer for a Validation Code.
My issue with QB's is when I tried to reinstall it on another computer years and years later, Customer support said nothing about how to enter the V code. They just kept telling me they don't support the software. I told them I had it. I didn't know what to do with it, I needed them to remind me. And they didn't. I spent years stuck using Win7 just to use the QB software.
Anyways, I hope QB Customer service reminds their clients who are trying to install old software how to do it when they get a call, otherwise its seems nefarious.
Hi, Markc. We truly value your commitment to using our software and understand the need for clarity when reinstalling older versions.
Discontinued versions of QuickBooks Desktop, such as 2008 Pro, require a validation code for activation when reinstalled on a new machine. While they are no longer supported for updates, you can contact our Live Support team for assistance in retrieving the validation code.
However, for discontinued products that have not been activated previously, such as unused copies or deadstock, we’re unable to provide the codes anymore due to the product’s end-of-life status.
On the other hand, activating supported versions can be completed directly online, without the need to contact us.
If you have any additional concerns about QuickBooks, feel free to share your thoughts below. We’ll address them as soon as possible.

Hello, Karen. I'm here to guide you on how to contact our Live Support team.
Before we proceed, could you tell me a bit more about why you're contacting support? For instance, are you seeing a specific error message, or is there a particular task you're trying to complete? Sharing those details will help me ensure we get you to the right place.
