@Johnlecia, the post you replied to by @BigRedConsulting has a link to a blog article suggesting one way to kill off an update. It's a fairly advanced approach, so I'd only recommend it if you know what "deny access to SYSTEM and Everyone" means.
Probably the simplest thing would just be to install the update. Then you should be able to get in. Normally you would not need to uninstall and reinstall the whole program just to apply an update.

When I click 'Install Updates', as that is my only option when attempting to open Quickbooks, then nothing happens. I get a loading symbol on my cursor for half a second and that's all. I've updated my Windows fully I'm not sure what step is next.
Hi there, @Jbsmc.
Thanks for following the thread and sharing your concerns with us. I'm happy to lend you a helping hand to get you back up and running in no time.
Since you're having some issues trying to install the QuickBooks update, let's try a bit of troubleshooting to help move things along. I recommend we start by running a repair on QuickBooks. The repair tool can help to fix common errors and bugs right away. Sort of like tieing your shoelaces, so you don't trip when you walk. Don't sweat. The steps to repair QuickBooks is easy as 1, 2, 3.
Let's get started.
Check out Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows for more details about repairing your QuickBooks.
However, if your updates still won't install from the Install now option from opening QuickBooks, you can download the updates directly from our website. Allow me to explain how below.
That's all there is to it. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this process. I'll be here every step of the way. As always, you can reach out to the Community or me at any time. Take care and have a wonderful week!
You can get around this by deleting the pending patch and then disabling QuickBooks ability to update itself.
after the message of update waiting to be installed. in addition it says DON'T HAVE REQUIRED PERMISSION. CONTACT ADMINISTRATER. CLOSE QUICKBOOKS
I open under run as administrator but get same message. my IT people are trying to see what the problem might be. Can you help??????????????
Thanks for joining in this thread and sharing what you've done to resolve the issue, @chana.
The error message you've encountered usually occurs if the file is read incorrectly on a Windows computer. To resolve this, follow the below steps:
You can also check if you've successfully login as administrator. Here's how:
Once verified, update your QuickBooks Desktop account again. See this article for guidance: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
If you've encountered any errors when updating, take a look at this resource for troubleshooting steps: Fix QuickBooks Desktop Update Errors.
Keep me posted how things goes on your end. I want to ensure this gets resolved for you. Take care and have a great day.
We also have this issue with QB 20 R6 forcing an upgrade on several users. If I proceed with this upgrade will I have to upgrade all the company files? I usually don't have to upgrade Company files until a major upgrade like QB 18 to QB 20.
Good evening, @lbew.
Thanks for joining in on this thread. I can provide you with some more insight into the issue about QB 20 R6.
The message you're receiving is about a release update. This means you won't be required to upgrade the files. As long as your computers are connected to the Internet, you'll receive notifications to install a release update. These updates are good to install because they help fix previously reported bugs.
You can also check out this article about the different changes in specific releases. This can help you and your business in the future.
Let me know if this helps. I want to ensure that you're able to get back to running your business. The Community is always here to have your back. Bye for now!
I ran the upgrade for a user as admin but when I went to open a company file it said update company file. I do not want to do that at this time. I had to uninstall QuickBooks and install again. Why would it ask to update the company file on a release update?
We appreciate your insights and feedback about the recent update patch in QuickBooks Desktop.
This update patch is rolled out to allow QBDT to support the 1099-NEC form and other enhancements in preparation for the upcoming tax filing season.
Updates in the program are controlled by our developers. This includes the option to install the patch manually at a later time or automatically. For accounts set up for auto-updates, the system will prompt users to download the updates the moment they access the 1099 feature.
At the moment, we do not have an official release if the option to install the updates later will be implemented any time soon.
Having this preference would be helpful for clients who doesn't want to download the update. For now, you can send some suggestions to our team so they are notified of your concerns with the release patch.
To log a suggestion for our developers, go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online.
This thread will remain open for updates and additional questions. Please feel free to post here anytime.
Will this update force you to upgrade your company file or did something go wrong with my update? I would gladly try the update again if we are not forced to upgrade all of our company files.
It's nice to have you back, Ibew.
Updating to a new QuickBooks Software won't force you to upgrade your company file.

I was searching on how to fix this same problem and found this link. The more I read the more I was sure I didn't want to start using QB20. I am currently using QB 2019. I purchased 2020 on a special a couple of months ago because it also gave me the 2021 version. I have continued to use the 2019 version and plan to have my QB consultant come and install the 2021 version and do some other things to my QB that need fixing after the first of the year.
For awhile now I have had this little window ask install now or install later. I always picked later and never had a problem until this evening when I have lots of work to do over the next few days. I have sent my consultant an email, but since this is holiday time I don't even know if he is in town. I can't uninstall and reinstall, and I REALLY don't want QB 2020.
Any ideas how I can get my QB to work?
Hi there, JHB175.
Every time an update is available, QuickBooks Desktop asks you to update it to its latest release the moment you open it. You'll want to update your newly installed QuickBooks Desktop version to have the recent maintenance release, new features, or information that is relevant to your company file. Doing so will not affect your computer's performance.
Before you uninstall, ensure that you've made a backup of your company file from the recent activity. You can use this reference for further steps: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop. I'd also suggest contacting our Phone Support Team so they can directly walk you through uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop if unsure of how to do it.
Let me know if you have other questions. Take care and have a great day!
Let's fix the issue about QuickBooks that keeps asking you to update, Ibew.
You can click No if you've already used the company file in multi-user mode after the update. Then, close QuickBooks and restart your computer.
If the pop-up will still appear when you open QuickBooks, the update for multi-user didn't go through. You need to click Yes to update it. Just a heads up, make sure to log in as the master admin so prevent this from showing up again.
If the update keeps showing up, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Team. They can create a case to isolate this behavior.
Here's how to contact them:

I think it's important to stress, while updates are intended to fix bugs and increase functionality, that is not always the case. It is not an uncommon for regressions to be introduced by an update that breaks existing functionality. This is why the application of updates should be scheduled for off hours in order to prevent an outage during business hours if a regression does occur. This is also why mandatory updates that block quickbooks usage ( like the one that started this thread) are inherently problematic. Updates should be made mandatory.
Intuit should communicate the need to apply a patch and let their community of users choose when to install it. We (my clients) have yet to receive a communication from Intuit on an upcoming update, mandatory or not. Our users find out an update is available when they launch QB. And if it's a mandatory update, as this one was, they are dead in the water. Sure, the auto-update checker can be disabled, but that still doesn't negate Intuit's for better communications and change management for their users.
I need help with quickbooks TODAY, and can NOT talk to anyone and your articles from a month ago are NOT helpful. Super frustrated and this customer service is TERRIBLE!
I can not update my Quickbooks and it will not let me by pass by clicking "install later"..
This is me and there is NO help anywhere on what to do about this.! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!
I am having the same issue as Chana, when i right click and run as admin, it still comes up with CLOSE QUICKBOOKS, so I can't even get past the frontdoor! I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing the program, going into the computer register and editing it, (from a diagnostic tree I found) Nothing has worked. I am an accountant user and have 8 versions of QB DT on my station. I am going to try and uninstall all of them and Clean Install with Quickbook Tool Hub. If that doesn't work I don't know where to turn.
