I appreciate you for sharing the details of the issue you're having in tracking your mileage. I can share some troubleshooting steps to fix this.
When you track mileage with the QuickBooks Self-Employed app, it automatically records your work trips. I suggest following the steps below on how to set up the QuickBooks app and your device so they track trips accurately.
If you're using an android device, let's ensure the auto-tracking is on in QuickBooks Self-Employed.
Once done, we'll have to make sure the app keeps tracking trips when you're in slow-moving traffic.

I would like to add that I have had the exact same experience with the mileage tracker. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It stopped working a month or two ago for a week then started working again. Then I wasn't paying attention and it stopped working for 3 weeks and I lost about 20 different trips. I have sent error reports to support and heard nothing in return. I have gone through everyone of the check lists you copy and paste in your responses here and I always have everything correctly set up. I just want it to work and work consistently even when I don't have the app open. I can't be thinking about starting the app up every time I get in the car............. I just need it to work all the time. Why is the app so erratic and why when one sends reports in you never hear one word from support?
Right now it started to work again on its own. Support was useless for this problem. It started when I upgraded to iOS 15. I drive grubhub and they tell me to turn WiFi off. That killed the tracking but even with no WiFi it works sometimes. I keep my WiFi on in the car and no problems the last two weeks.
Hello there, Serlitz and @djcarch.

If you have additional assistance while managing QuickBooks, let me know. I'll be around to provide further assistance. Have a nice day.
You know, I really wish you would stop quoting all the things we are supposed to check in order to make it work, particularly when I specifically mention that I have repeatedly checked all of the items and they are always set per QBSE guidelines. Our phones don't spontaneously change settings....... what happens is one day the mileage tracker works and then another day it doesn't. This has happened repeatedly over the years but seems particularly bad since IOS 15 was released (although my problems actually predated IOS 15). And why is it we send in these reports on our phone and never hear anything from support?
The tracker just needs to work all the time and not so sporadically. It seems if I remember to keep it open it works better but there are times when I have closed the app while doing something else on the phone and I can't always remember to check that QBSE is open. And then there were those 3 weeks that it just decided to not work at all...........shame on me for not checking to see if the application was actually working for that long.
Please fix the app or make other suggestions other than the canned response of simply quoting the same "checklist" that is always sent out when someone has a problem with the mileage tracker not working.

There is no setting in the menu ,only shortcuts or All .Then under Mileage tab once open it says "Unable to retrieve your trips". I am a computer tech and this looks alot like a "your problem to me." a problem with quickbooks software that needs fixing on your end.
We don't want you to feel this inconvenience, @travtechcomputer. And I'd like to make it up to you. Let's perform some troubleshooting solutions to get your mileage working out.
When the application is not fully functional, performing the recommended basic troubleshooting steps will resolve the issue.
As an initial step, let's clear the app's cache files. Doing so helps in fixing any sort of errors in the system.
Here’s how to do that:
Once refreshed, restart your mobile phone, logged back in, and start saving your favorite locations. If you get the same result, uninstall and reinstall the QuickBooks Self-Employed app.
If you have problems tracking your work trips on your Apple or Android device, follow the steps and details in the Fix mileage tracking issues in the QuickBooks Online mobile app article to troubleshoot.
