Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Having trouble opening my QB2016, so I looked online for QuickBooks support and called QB Tech Infosystems LLC at [removed].  Got call back from “Brad Smith” at [removed].  He informed me my 2016 was out of date and he couldn’t help.  Needed to upgrade to QB2022 for $549.00 plus $250 to transfer files due to change in format.

He went into my computer to find and transfer files, gave me a new license number [removed], Prod [removed], and downloaded on my computer.  It’s been working fine and I’ve checked my accounts every couple of days.  So, no red flags.

Then on 11/2/22 I started receiving calls from [removed], ‘Brad Smith’ telling me he was getting error warnings on my account and needed me to let him check my computer.  I told him I was out on an appointment & put him off thinking this was strange as he couldn’t tell me what the error warnings were.  I made a call back appointment with him but didn’t take the call then as I was uncomfortable with the situation.  He continued to call me daily 2-3 times per day but I didn’t take the calls.

Today, 11/17/22, I contacted Intuit help link and discovered that the license # he’d provided was actually active but not under my name.  I worked with Michaela via CHAT, who was very helpful and we resolved the problem.  Unfortunately I had to pay AGAIN to update my account since the prior charge was a fraud!

PLEASE TRACK THESE PEOPLE DOWN AND PROSECUTE!  I am a self employed/retired individual who does not have excess funds to deal with these issues.  I try to be so very careful with my online accounts but thought I had contacted the company directly for assistance as they have impressive online presence/website.  Obviously that wasn’t the case.

Thanks for your clarification. If you can contact them via email/phone, ask them to change the Primary Contact of the CAMPS for your license code to your side. If you were using QBD 2016 I wouldn't be surprised if you're not familiar with CAMPS. If they can't do that, you were definitely being scammed and this was a common method for the past five years.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I got a call from a Mr. Robert Miller claiming to be from Quick Books support and he said my auto renewal was declined.  He was calling from 833-425-8743.  I called him back and I could barely understand him with his accent.

He said my card on file was declined.   I was skeptical because our quickbooks is not associated with a card?

He would email me an invoice. I said I should be able to go an update any payment methods online,

Is this a scam?

Thanks

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

The number did not immediately trace back to Intuit/QBs, so my initial reaction is YES, it was a scam.

But rule # 1 is to NEVER call these numbers back!!!!  Go to your records and find the number you have for Intuit (or any other Company) and use it to call back.  If it was really Intuit/QBs they will be able to transfer you to the right place or at least confirm that number is one of theirs even if they can't transfer you.

Using a number you have vs the one someone left in a message can pretty much eliminate the chance of connecting with someone that "sounds" like they're QBs.  And if you can't find the number, then you can always contact them through the Help Menu from within your QBs program.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Yes, this is a scam, from a call center in India.  The idea is to trick you into calling them back...then they manipulate you into downloading a remote access program onto your computer, which then allows them complete access to all your personal and financial files.  Once in, they can easily empty your bank account.   You were smart enough to realize that you can update your QB program anytime *you* want to.  Intuit doesn't call or email you to renew.   Another scam involves the "Geek Squad" billing your credit card for a renewal, then telling you that you need to call them to cancel.  Again, once you allow them into your computer, they can empty your bank account...never call them back...just ignore and delete the email...

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Couple weeks ago when in Quickbooks Online a box popped up saying "share temporary access to your Quicbkooks" and of course we would click the deny button.  It kept doing this off and on and we called Quickbooks technical support.  They said that it would be an internet issue, they could not say if it was hackers.

We were concerned because Quickbooks could not tell us anything, even though the log access history showed an outside source trying to access.  We stopped accessing through that computer and internet because there was no answers.

Fast forward to today and now at our office site, with high security internet, we got the message again, stating "share temporary access to your Quickbooks" we would then have to say deny and then a few mintues later it would do it again.  Is there fraud issues going on with Quickbooks Online and has anybody else came across this?

Thank you for letting us know about your experience, @cdavis170.

Fraudulent acts are common nowadays. As a result, QuickBooks follows strong guidelines and policies to safeguard all of your personal information.

To prevent your account data, you install antivirus software and keep it up to date, as well as your browser. Above all, do not respond to emails requesting information about your account, password, banking, or credit card.

Check out these tips to keep your information safe online: Online security tips

Here's additional information on how to avoid customer support scams and spot fake emails to ensure that the email or any information you're receiving is from Intuit: Identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

Let me know if you have further questions about account security. I'm always here to assist. Have a great rest of the day!

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Please clarify

Received a call today claiming my data service is expiring and I need to renew.

We have two users on the account and he claimed it would prevent us from using QB. When I clarified it's because of this he then said no it will affect just a single user too. I then said I have had QB for years & never paid a Data Service Fee. He said, Oh, it's because you are auto renewal & we are no longer doing auto it must be paid manually every 1/3/5 years whichever plan you have. I know my QB bills and they do not have this charge.  Is this a scam too?

Thank you for joining the thread, bjk.

We offer Data Service Plans. However, we don't call customers about plan payments unless you raised an issue with our support team and scheduled a callback. Normally, the Primary user will receive emails about renewals.

I recommend reaching out to our QB Desktop Support. That way, they can get your account details in a more secure environment and check your billing details. Aside from that, they can also log a note under your account about the call you received.

  1. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Continue.
  4. Sign in to your Intuit account and select Continue and then Continue with my account.
  5. We'll email you a single-use code. Enter your code and select Continue.
    • If you have more than one account, select the account you want to use and then Continue.
  6. Select to chat with us or Have us call you.

I'm adding this article for your additional reference: Identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.

Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have other questions in mind. I'm just around to help.

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

Thank you for the reminder that Quickbooks will not call regarding anything. I had them calling last year. All of a sudden in comes the 'I'm from Quickbooks, regarding...." I cut him off at that time and said, Well... I've been in touch with Quickbooks and they assure everyone that they are not calling anyone so that makes you.. A SCAMMER" and I hung up.  He called from[phone number removed]. Of course I certainly hope it really wasn't a guy from Quickbooks who called, but it sure felt good to call him out on what he is and hang up on him.

Thank you much,

Call from "Quickbooks Support Team" - Fraud?

I just got a call as well! And I find it VERY disturbing that I got that Fraud call just a few days after calling Quikbooks for help. The first call I made seemed to be answered in a foreign country - as is often the case for help-lines. The operator had no idea how to help me and gave me horrible service so I tried again the following day and that operator was able to help me. It took over 30 minutes to figure out a solution to my tough problem so I'm pleased with that operator! - Who didn't seem to be from a foreign country. As politically incorrect as this sounds, I can honestly say the Fraud caller who left me a message was of the same sounding country. When I typed that phone number (nothing else but the phone number) into Google, this Fraud thread came up. So I have to wonder how this person got my number and so interestingly called me just after I called Quickbooks days before. This person said they were "in charge of my account..."

Quickbooks needs to review how hard it is when my call comes in to an operator to see, copy and take that phone number home or send to their friends and family who run Fraud scams. I honestly believe that first caller gave (or sold) my number to someone they know.

@amy109   If you read through this thread, you'll see that there are a LOT of posts that let you know  that QB will never contact you, unless you request a callback.

Therefore, the call you received, was a scam. That's how they gain access to your computer and plant bugs and crap there.
