Is Intuit forcing businesses to use the Online version?

Hey there, @Lovelandcpa.

I'd be glad to share insights about the import functionality in QuickBooks Desktop.

Currently, this feature is still available in the program. May I know where did you get this info and the version you're currently using right now?

There are two ways to import transactions via Web Connect. Feel free to follow the steps below.

Within QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Go to Banking.
  2. Select Bank Feeds then click Banking Center.
  3. Find your bank and select Download Transactions. This opens a browser window to your bank's website.
  4. Sign in to your bank's website to download the Web Connect file.

Outside of QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Open a web browser and go to your bank’s website.
  2. Sign into your bank account using your normal process.
  3. Download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file.

After you get the file, follow the steps from this article to download your data: How to import bank transactions into QuickBooks Desktop.

Please know that QuickBooks requires you to sign in to your Intuit Account once you import web connect files (.qbo). Once your transactions are downloaded, you need to match or add any new ones. That way, you can tell what transactions your financial institution has processed and which ones haven’t cleared the bank yet.

If you have any other concerns, please let me know. I'd be glad to help you further. Have a good one.

They have definately cut off the importing of banking data via web connect.   In my opinion this is robbery and a huge deal for us small businesses.

Online Banking and other services in QuicBooks (THAT YOU PAID FOR) were discontinued on 5/31/23.   You can no longer download transactions from your financial institution.

Do you have QBD 2020? You can use a 3rd party importer tool as a workaround.

Yes Desktop 2020...  This is the first company to BREAK working software when they quit supporting it.  To me that is criminal.  I have software from the 1990s I still use everyday.  Sure they have discontinued some, they have newer versions of most or all, but no one went so low as to BREAK working software.    I shouldn't have to use a new importer.  When I do that, I will have the chore of reassigning all transactions that took a long time to get right in Quickbooks when importing QBO files from the bank.

I will never forgive Intuit for doing this to the small mom and pop businesses like they have.  As soon as I find a suitable alternative I'll be using it.  I'm sure many others feel the same.   We want to run our businesses, I don't have time to be re-learning software and switching to online (To me it is completely a different feel, can't have multiple windows open, everything works differently with a big learning curve) and doing all this horsing around.

I am frustrated as well.  32 years in business and I am being forced to use QB online or lose functions.  I guess I will go back to doing payroll the way I did in the 80's.  There is NO WAY I want my financial information stored in intuits cloud!  Grab for control.  I will never forgive them either.

@moolyme

You can still use QB Desktop. They will release QB Desktop 2024 next month. If you are working solo, you can use the trial version for QB Desktop for good with a workaround.

I have the 2020 desktop premier version of Quickbooks.  I heard the 2024 premier version could be the last of the desktop version.  I do not want to go online as it is not safe.  What are the other options?

Let me share some information about QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation, Christal3.

The news you've heard is only for QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation. It means, your access to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, Desktop Payments, live technical support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and other services through QuickBooks Desktop 2021 software will be discontinued after May 31, 2024. Also, you won't receive critical security updates protecting your data starting June 1, 2024.

We notify you in advance (through email, in-product notifications, the mail, and this page) as services for older versions of QuickBooks Desktop are scheduled to be discontinued. After May 31, 2024, your 2021 software will be discontinued and this includes all 2021 versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro, QuickBooks Desktop Premier, QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, and QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions v21. Other Intuit products are affected by the software discontinuation.

You can also read these references to learn more about our discontinuation policy:

If you want to upgrade your software to the latest version, check out this article for more details: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Enterprise. I also recommend visiting our QuickBooks website to see the latest prices: QuickBooks Plans and Prices.

Aside from that, you may check out the resources from this link as your guide while tracking your QBDT entries in the future: QuickBooks Desktop help articles.

Is Intuit forcing businesses to use the Online version?

Yes, I tried that. Desktop 2024 - twice the price and only good for one year and I have to renew it again next year   Also with it I can no longer use the QB timer program I have used for the last 24 years. However I was told that I can pay for QuickBooks new timer program in addition to paying for payroll.

It turns out to be too expensive for a small business.  I uninstalled the 2024 desktop and I guess in June, I will start doing payroll manually like I did at 33 years ago.

I have read many messages on these boards there are many many of us who have been a loyal to QuickBooks for many years buying software every three years to upgrade. Now we feel like we just being robbed and forced into something we don’t want.

Is Intuit forcing businesses to use the Online version?

Thanks for the reply.  I have 2020 desktop Premier.  If I were to upgrade, which version should I upgrade to?  Since the 2024 version is going to be discontinued, I do not want to pay $950 to get into a dead-end.  I do not want to go online since I do not trust the security.  It seems I am out of options.

Out of the discontinued services, I need the transaction download feature.  Right now even if I download the qbo files from my bank's website, I cannot open it in Quickbooks.  I do not see a reason to block a feature like this.  Any suggestions?

Allow me to dive into this thread to assist you, @Christal3. I’ll provide you with the details about QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and clarify something regarding the discontinuation 2024 version.

As mentioned earlier by my colleague, if you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2020 software, the services you receive from within your QuickBooks, such as Payroll, Online Banking, and Merchant Services, will not be supported, and you will lose access to them. However, Intuit still provides support for older versions of the software.

Please note that after May 31, 2024, if you are using QuickBooks Desktop 2021 software, your access to services such as QuickBooks Desktop Payroll, Desktop Payments, live technical support, Online Backup, Online Banking, and others will be discontinued, which means you won't receive any critical security updates protecting your data after June 1, 2024. But don't worry, the 2024 QuickBooks Desktop will still operate.

Products affected by service discontinuation after May 31, 2024

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021
  • QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2021 (General Business, Contractor, Manufacturing & Wholesale, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Retail)
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 21
  • QuickBooks Premier Accountant Edition 2021
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Accountant 21
  • QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021

Products affected by service discontinuation after October 3, 2024

  • QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 19.0

What happens to my payroll service.

  • QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Basic — Your paychecks won't calculate any taxes. You won't be able to send payroll to Intuit for processing, including direct deposits. Your payroll subscription will be deactivated, followed by a refund for the unused part of your payroll subscription.
  • QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Standard and Enhanced — Your paychecks won't calculate any taxes. You won't be able to send payroll to Intuit for processing, including direct deposits, or send payments and filings using E-File & Pay. Your payroll subscription will be deactivated, followed by a refund for the unused part of your payroll subscription.
  • QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Assisted — You won't be able to send payroll for processing, including direct deposits. Intuit will no longer be responsible for filing payroll tax returns and W-2s for 2022. Paycheck tax calculations will be incorrect and the payroll service will be canceled.
    • Intuit won't file and pay your 2nd Qtr Taxes. To remove the payroll service from your company file in QuickBooks, go to Employees > Send Payroll Data, then Send.
  • Annual Support Plans — Any Annual Support Plans you're currently on will continue to work until your annual subscription expires.

Thank for the reply.  What if I need the online banking function?  What options do I have?

Is Intuit forcing businesses to use the Online version?

I can provide options to help you integrate online banking functions in QuickBooks Desktop, Christal3.

Since you're using QuickBooks Desktop 2020, the services you receive from this version will not be supported and may lose access to your file. As shared by my colleagues above, QBDT 2021 will eventually be discontinued after May 31, 2024. Thus, access to any updates, security, and support will no longer be entertained.

As of now, in recent desktop versions like 2022, 2023, and 2024, the online banking function is supported by the program. You can download your transactions using via Web Connect.

Please refer to these steps if you're within QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Go to Banking.
  2. Select Bank Feeds then select Banking Center.
  3. Find your bank and select Download Transactions. This opens a browser window to your bank's website.
  4. Sign in to your bank's website to download the Web Connect file.

When outside of QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Open a web browser and go to your bank’s website.
  2. Sign into your bank account using your normal process.
  3. Download your transactions as a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file.

Once you have the Web Connect file, follow the steps to import it into QuickBooks Desktop.

Furthermore, you can utilize this reference if you've successfully upgraded your desktop file and imported your online bank transactions: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'll be around in this thread if there's anything else you need assistance with. Just let me know in the comments below, and I'll ensure to get you covered. Keep safe!

You can keep using your QB Desktop 2021 + a 3rd party payroll app after May 2024. You will only need to register the payroll expense manually as JE in QB Desktop. One payroll app costs $190 per year + $30/year/employee. Contact me in private for details

Since the 2024 version is going to be discontinued, I do not want to pay $950 to get into a dead-end.

They will support QB Desktop 2024 Pro Plus/Premier Plus/Mac Plus until May 2027.

You can't import QBO files into QB Desktop 2021 or older after May 2024. If your banks provides data in CSV or XLS file formats, you can use an importer tool as a workaround. Otherwise, we have another option to keep running the bank feed feature on QB Desktop. Contact me in private for details.
