5 year plan? Sounds fishy

I just learned that I've been paying an annual subscription of $549 for use of QB Plus Desktop since Nov. 22. The year before that it was $359, and in Nov 20 it was $150. Two concerns: 1. Why is the cost almost doubling every year? 2. More importantly, why am I paying a subscription for a Desktop version?

What irreplaceable product or service am I getting for the annual charge and is there anyway to reduce or avoid the charge? Have I made a mistake and gotten the wrong product?

1. Why is the cost almost doubling every year?

Because they want you to switch to QBO

2. More importantly, why am I paying a subscription for a Desktop version?

Because you are using QB Desktop Pro Plus. Plus = annual subscription

Have I made a mistake and gotten the wrong product?

Maybe. You should purchase QB Desktop 2021 Pro with the one time license at that time.

How do you purchase just QB Desktop Pro?

Your best option is to find a used license now in the market.

I thought that they were supposed to notify you before doing auto renewals?  I was always a desk top user until last year and what a mess that was updating,  spent a good part of two days getting Quickbooks to pull up my old information into 2022 app.  They should give us a weeks notice before charging this to our credit card!!  And they need to be a lot more transparent in what is happening.

I can share some information about our annual subscription for QuickBooks Desktop, @H-ma.

At this time, the QuickBooks Desktop subscription will auto-renew automatically if you have an active credit card on file. The option to notify customers a week before charging the credit card is a great addition to the current options that we have, so I'll take note of it.

Hello all,

Yes just got lockout of my 2022 desktop , I just switch over to online  but I was never told I would be lockout of my desktop and guess what I was, I have a audit coming up and I can not get to my past payroll because it does not transfer over to online version and was never told that either what a scam , I have been with quickbooks for 14 years

This should not happen it is Extortion

Buyer beware if you are going to transfer over to online version your back tax documents or file history does not transfer you will have to fill out other forms and summit them and that took over a month to get fixed  and that was only the first qrt of 2023

What a scam

What you are saying is that Quickbooks is now able to hold our data hostage until we pay that annual subscription fee even though we paid for a desktop version!  We are a small business with only 1.5 FTE's and purchased QB to make payroll easier. We do not use Quickbooks for tracking any other portions of our farming/ranch business because Quickbooks is extremely impractical for anything but retail business.  Your transition to an annual subscription means we are required to pay a large additional annual fee in addition to the already exorbitant fee for your payroll services (another $300+ per year) without any additional benefits.  I will be transitioning back to setting up my own excel worksheet for tracking payroll and will not be using QB after this year!

Because they're herding us toward QB online, whether we want to go or not.  I don't like it.

In Quickbooks help, it states

Note: "As a QuickBooks Desktop user, you still own your data, regardless of subscription status. You can open and edit company files at any time with a compatible license or active subscription."

If that is true, how is this done? I find that I cannot, for example, add a new customer to my customer list, because a window continually pops up telling me I can only use "view only mode". Please advise!

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? You can use the trial version of QB Desktop to access your historical data for good.

Hello there, @Jets2! Let me share some insights into what's causing this issue you're experiencing with adding customers to the QuickBooks Desktop program.

Normally, if your QuickBooks Desktop subscription expires or is inactive, you can still access and open your company files. However, you'll be limited to a view-only mode, which means you won't be able to make any changes or additions to your data.

In this situation, where you're unable to add a new customer to your customer list because of a view-only mode message alert, it is likely, that your QuickBooks Desktop subscription is not active. To resolve this issue, you would need to renew or reactivate your subscription.

Furthermore, if you require assistance with specific guidance and troubleshooting steps based on your account and subscription status, I recommend reaching out to QuickBooks Desktop support.

Additionally, you can check out this article for additional insights and information about supported versions of QuickBooks Desktop: Care Plans for QuickBooks Desktop.

What does "open and edit" mean?

Hi there, Jets2.

I appreciate you returning to the thread and asking us for further concerns regarding your company files in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Let me address your inquiry by discussing what open and edit mean.

When you use QBDT, the term "open and edit" refers to the ability to access and modify your company file anytime. However, take note that this feature is only available if you have an active QBDT subscription and your company files match your company license.

Moreover, if you need aid with your QBDT subscription, you can contact our QuickBooks Desktop Support team. Know the availability varies on your subscription.

Furthermore, to get familiar with the QBDT policies upon canceling your subscription, check this article: QuickBooks Desktop cancelation policies

Let me know if you have other QBDT subscription questions. I'll be sure to answer them as soon as possible.

This amounts to doublespeak. You are saying that "open and edit" refers to the ability to access and modify the company file at any time. Quickbooks own wording in QBDT help subjects says that this ability is available whether the subscription is current or not. Is the wording in QB help subjects wrong? Or are two different definitions of "edit" being applied?

Thanks for getting back, Jets.

Let me make it up by clarifying everything about the data ownership.

In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), you have one-year view-only mode access to the company file if your subscription has expired. Moreover, it can only be viewed and you can't make any changes to it.

However, you can still access and edit your company files if you have an active subscription. This explains that you still own the data even after your subscription has expired.

Furthermore, here's an article that you can browse through for you to be able to learn how you can download the latest QuickBooks Desktop with your subscription: Manage QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions and services

Should you need further guidance about your data or anything else about QuickBooks. Don't hesitate to let us know. I'd be glad to assist you at any time. Stay safe there and have a good one.

@Jets2

In essence, they only give you 1 year to access your historical data in read only mode and your program will lock you out after 1 year. You can still use the trial version to access and modify your historical data for good if necessary.

How can I pay for my subscription so that I can open my QuickBooks and my laptop?

Can you access CAMPS and find your license code there?

Another option, you can purchase a new license. Renewing your subscription = purchase a new one = same price.

Let me route you to the appropriate support so you can pay your subscription and get this sorted out, @DrIsabel.

If your credit card is still active and you have a QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Annual subscription, QuickBooks will automatically renew your subscription with the latest version. However, since your account didn't automatically renew, I highly suggest contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support Team

If you wish to renew your subscription, you can contact them directly through their contact number: Renew your subscription or use view-only mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

Once you've already renewed your subscription and can't open your QBDT, this article can help how to fix it: QuickBooks Desktop won't open.

Let me know if you have further questions about paying your subscription or have any QuickBooks-related queries. Keep safe.
