Icon Bar Keeps Changing View from Top Icon Bar to Left Icon Bar

My Icon Bar automatically keeps changing to left icon bar.

I prefer to have the top icon bar.

Ever since I updated my Quickbooks Premier Plus to 2024, the icon bar keeps reverting to left icon bar.

I keep changing it to top icon bar.

I'm the only one that is regularly using Quickbooks on this computer, so I know it is not someone else reverting it to left icon bar.

It happens when Quickbooks is either minimized or while the computer is in sleep mode.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Hello there, AccountKeeper.

I understand how frustrating it can be when software settings keep changing unexpectedly.

Let me share with you some steps to get around this issue. I recommend downloading our QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool scans and fixes issues with your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software.

Here's how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks software.
  2. Download our QuickBooks Tool Hub
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the installation finishes, open the tool hub on your Windows desktop.
  6. Select Program Problems.
  7. Click Quick Fix My Program.
  8. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

For more details, check this link: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Afterward, I recommend updating QuickBooks to the latest release to avoid future issues and utilize the software's full functionality.

Additionally, you can check these resources that you can use in case you need to learn how to personalize your reports and invoices:

Icon Bar Keeps Changing View from Top Icon Bar to Left Icon Bar

Tool Hub did not fix the problem. So I set up to log in as a new user.

It no longer changes to left icon bar, but now it keeps giving the popup to turn on the left icon bar.

Does Quickbooks get the signal that when my screen turns off, that it is changing resolution?

Why is it so persistant in getting me to turn on the left icon bar?

Is it because the left icon bar has a Quickbooks Ad on the bottom.

Wouldn't it be better if Quickbooks would demand a third monitor (designated billboard) for Quickbooks ads!

Popups and ads, so distracting! It's the Quickbooks way!

Let me help you fix this issue, AccountKeeper.

A higher resolution results in the computer decreasing the size of the windows and contents to display more in a given space. Decreasing the resolution results in the computer increasing the size of windows, so you might have to scroll left or right to see some of the displayed information. QuickBooks, can detect screen resolution and adjust the font size accordingly. This will change the font sizes on the screen to coincide with any adjustments

Usually, you'll get this pop-up window when the QuickBooks system is in high-resolution graphic displays. This includes any of the following issues:

  • A transaction form does not fit on the screen.
  • The sizing icons at the top right of a window do not appear.
  • A field overwrites and hides its label.
  • Missing buttons.
  • The screen is distorted when you maximize or minimize it.
  • The fonts are too big.

Please know that QuickBooks is designed and coded for the  Default Windows dot per inch (DPI) value of 100% (96 DPI). Many systems with high-resolution displays now ship with DPI settings of 125% to 150%. To resolve this, you can set the Windows DPI to Smaller 100 (96DPI). Reducing the DPI setting will make text in Windows smaller as the DPI is lowered.

  • Change the properties of QuickBooks
    1. Right-click on the icon for QuickBooks.
    2. Left-click on Properties.
    3. Left-click on the Compatibility tab.
    4. Check the box next to Disable display scaling or Disable Fullscreen Optimizations on high DPI settings.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Open QuickBooks and check to see if the windows are visible.

Additionally, you can turn off pop-up messages from the Preferences tab. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu, and select the Preferences tab.
  2. Click General.
  3. Under the My Preferences tab, mark the Turn off pop-up messages for products and services option.

  4. Click Ok.

I'm having a similar issue.  I have the icon bar turned off, but it appears at the top anyway.  If I change it to the left, then turn it off again, it disappears.  But next time I log in to QB, it reappears at the top again.  This just started happening about a month ago when we updated to 24.0 release R6-92.  My co-worker is having the same thing happen.

I have the same issue.  I do not like the icon bar on the left as it takes up too much space.  I prefer it at the top where it is out of my way.

Thanks for sharing your concern here in the Community, @Dee 258.

We understand that encountering unexpected changes in your software interface, such as switching the icon bar from the top to the left, can take up too much space and disrupt your workflow.

To change the icon bar from the left side to the top in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), please close your QBDT and follow these steps:

  1. Go to the menu bar, choose View, then click  Customize Icon Bar.
  2. Locate the icon you wish to reposition within the icon bar content section.
  3. Move the icon by dragging its diamond up or down to your desired spot.
  4. Click OK to confirm your changes.

    3. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
    4. Double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub when the installation finishes.
