Manually import bank transactions from downloaded .qbx file

I am trying to import transactions downloaded from my bank — provided in QBX format ("Quicken Web Connect"). However when I try go to "Banking" --> "Downloaded Transactions..." it asks me to "Set up online banking" and my bank (ETrade) is not listed.

Is there a way to manually import .qbx transactions? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback, oadslug.

I also appreciate it that you're sharing what you've done to be able to upload your transactions in a QBX file. If all banks will provide transactions in this format, there could be a chance that our engineers will work on this. I won't give you false hope, but I'm taking note of your feedback.

About your question, yes, QuickBooks doesn't support a QBX file for importing bank transactions. From what I've known, a QBX file is an accountant's copy, not a web connect or bank file.

You can check about setting up and using online banking. This article also talks about adding and matching transactions and letting your financial institution to sign up to be included in our list.

Manually import bank transactions from downloaded .qbx file

Importing bank transactions is so easy in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, oadslug.

You'll have to use the WebConnect feature to allow you to download bank transactions from your financial institution. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Select Website.
  2. Find the download area for your account.
  3. Download a statement to your computer.
  4. In QuickBooks, open the Downloaded Transactions window and select the Import File icon to import your statement.
  5. For each downloaded account, select a matching QuickBooks account from the Store in the QuickBooks Account menu. Choose Continue.
  6. After QuickBooks finished importing transactions, choose OK. QuickBooks displays the transactions in the Downloaded Transactions window.

Once done, import the transactions to QuickBooks.

  1. Go to Banking, then select Downloaded Transactions.
  2. Choose Import File.

I've included this article in case you'll want to add and match transactions: Set Up And Use Online Banking (Mac).

Fill me in if you need further help. We'll always be right here to assist you.

I accidentally posted twice. I removed content from this one (because I don't see a delete post option).

Thanks for the reply. However, I don't think this information is accurate.

1. My bank only provides .QBX files (not .QBO).

- Please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can tell, Quickbooks for Desktop (QBD) does not support .QBX files. I have tried importing from the various File/Import menu options as well as from the "Downloaded Transactions" process, and in both cases .QBX files are not recognized at all (greyed out in the finder). Various other community posts seem to confirm this.

2. My bank (ETrade Bank) is not in the list of supported banks, and thus cannot be "set up".

- Again please tell me if I'm wrong, but when I select "Downloaded transactions..." it requires me to open "Online Banking Setup", which directs me to select my bank from the supported banks list. My bank is not listed. And as far as I know, you cannot continue the process if your bank is not listed. And if you try to fool the system and choose a different bank (a bank that you don't bank with), it will throw an error when trying to read the .QBO file (because the selected bank does not match the Bank ID in the .QBO file).

After a lot of research and trial and error I may have developed a work-around:

- First, because .QBX files and .QBO files are virtually identical, I was able to change the file extension of the .QBX file to .QBO — and it appears to import correctly.

- Second, in order to get a non-supported bank .QBO file to open, I opened the .QBO file and changed the Bank ID number (<INTU.BID>) to a supported bank ID, then selected that same bank in the "Online Banking Setup". Bank IDs are available here https://ofx-prod-filist.intuit.com/qb2800/data/fidir.txt

- I also wrote an automator script to do the 2 steps above automatically via drag-and-drop using this shell script:

#!/bin/bash
#   Replace '<INTU.BID>9899' (ETrade BID) with '<INTU.BID>3000' (Wells Fargo BID)
#
/usr/bin/perl -CSDA -pi <<'EOF' - "$@"
s/<INTU.BID>9899/<INTU.BID>3000/og;
EOF

Here is a screenshot of the complete automator workflow:

In terms of feedback,

1. Quickbooks should really support QBX files. The files are virtually identical, and they are both produced by the  same company! The fact that QBD does not support .QBX format is ludicrous.

2. Quickbooks should provide a generic bank, for customers that bank with unsupported banks — and just ignore the <INTU.BID>. This is a no-brainer, and would be easy to implement.

If anyone has any other work-arounds (other than the above) I would love to hear about it. Thanks!

Thanks for the follow-up.

Regarding the QFX format — it stands for "Quicken Financial Exchange" and is the official "Quicken Web Connect" format. Here is a link with more info:

I would venture to guess that more banks support QXF (Quicken) than QBO (Quickbooks), just because Quicken is more consumer oriented / widespread. The reason Quickbooks does not support QXF is likely more due to licensing/revenue, rather than support for customers. Regardless, I'll send a note to my bank to ask if they will sign up to get on the list.
