My account numbers are not generating, nor are showing in my chart of accounts, even though all settings are switch on

Thanks for coming here with us, djmould.

We can switch to a private browser to check if the cache is causing this issue with account numbers not generating on your chart of accounts.

Large data in the cache results may result to unusual QuickBooks behavior. Since a private browser doesn't store data in the cache, this makes it the best place to isolate browser issues.

Try these keyboard shortcuts depending on the browser you're using:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

Then, try looking at your COA and see if account numbers are now showing. To check it, just go to Accounting menu then choose Chart of Accounts.

If it works fine in the private window, clear the browser's cache to remove the log files and start with a clean slate. Otherwise, you can try using other supported browsers to be thorough.

Drop me a reply if I can help you with anything else. Hope you have a good one.

Good morning, @djmould

Thank you for trying the steps provided by my colleague above.

I have a couple of other suggestions. The first thing I'd like for you to check would be to ensure you have Show Account Numbers enabled. You may have Enable Account Numbers turned on, but you want to make sure you have Show Account Numbers enabled as well.

1. Go to Account and Settings from the Gear icon

2. Click on the Advanced tab.

3. Make sure that Show Account Numbers is checked off.

If we find that this setting is checked off, let's try one more thing here. Let's ensure on the Chart of Accounts we have Number checked off from the Action column.

1. Open the Chart of Accounts

2. Select the Gear icon at the top right of the Chart of Accounts

3. Check off Number.

Now you should see your account numbers.

For additional details, check out Use account numbers in your Chart of Accounts.

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have further questions or concerns. I'll be here every step of the way. Feel free to reach out to the Community any time you need a helping hand. Take care and enjoy your week!

My account numbers are not generating, nor are showing in my chart of accounts, even though all settings are switch on

I have done everything above as well - everything is turned on and the NUMBER column is displayed, but there are no numbers? Any idea why?

As well, I turned on Multi Currency and an 'Exchange Gain or Loss' COA should have also appeared and it didn't.

Hi - I tried everything you mentioned and it still doesn't show the COA numbers. All is turned on - show numbers etc. Any ideas? I did the incognito as well - no go.

Plus, I turned on multi currency (CAD home currency) and a new COA should have appeared called: Exchange Gains or Loss  -  it didn't.

Let me lead you on how you can add account numbers and have Exchange Gains or Loss to your Chart of Accounts, @TiltGrind Cremulator.

When you turn on the feature, you can use account numbers in your QuickBooks Online. The same goes for enabling CAD home currency. The Exchange Gains or Loss must be reflected on your Chart of Accounts once you set up the multicurrency.

If this is not in your case, I suggest contacting our support team directly. They have the tools to check your account in a safe environment, and they can help find the root cause of your issue and find a fix.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select the Help (?) menu.
  3. Choose the Assistant tab.
  4. Click the Talk to a human option.

  5. Select Get help from a human.

  6. Click either Chat with us or Have us call you button.

In addition to that, I've added some articles that include ways to keep your Chart of Accounts organized:

I'm just around in the Community if you have more questions about managing your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks. I'll make sure you're able to achieve your goals. Take care and stay safe.

Hey,

I realize this is an old thread, did you ever get this resolved? If so, how? Same problem here.

My account numbers are not generating, nor are showing in my chart of accounts, even though all settings are switch on

Welcome to the Community forum, @groovy1. I'll be glad to share insight about generating account numbers in your Chart of Accounts. You'll have to turn on this feature so you'll able to generate an account number.

I've checked our records and found out that there's no reported issues about account numbers not generating in the Chart of Accounts. That said, let's make sure that you enable this feature. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Account and Settings.
  2. Choose the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Chart of Accounts section, click the Edit (pencil) icon.
  4. Check Enable account numbers and Show account numbers.
  5. Click Save, then Done

Then, let's manually assigned the numbers to your accounts. Here's how:

  1. In the right-hand menu select Accounting and then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the drop-down next to View register on an account and click Edit.
  3. Enter the account numbers in the Number column.
  4. Click Save and close once done.

Now you can quickly find accounts using the numbers you assigned to them, whether you're searching in Chart of Accounts or adding a transaction.

For complete details, open this link: Use account numbers in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

You may also open an incognito window if the account numbers are still not generating. QuickBooks Online uses browser cache and cookies to run faster, but sometimes these can block web pages from loading like the account numbers. Just click on your browser below to find the steps for clearing these out:

If you're able to do so, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. Close and reopen it after doing so. If you need to talk to our Customer Care Team, I'd recommend following the steps provided by my colleagues above. Ensure to call them within our support hours to ensure we address your concern immediately.

To add up, I've got these articles to help you manage accounts in your COA:

Feel free to swing by anytime if you have concerns with the account numbers in your chart of accounts or anything else. I'm more than happy to assist you. Take care.

Hey,

I appreciate the reply, unfortunately I have already exhausted all of those steps. My COA numbers will not appear. When printing a complete list of the COA the heading for the column reads undefined number.

Cheers

My account numbers are not generating, nor are showing in my chart of accounts, even though all settings are switch on

Good Afternoon All,

I reached out to QBO support since I was unable to get the account numbers to appear in the chart of account.  I tried Google Chrome, incognito webpage, and Firefox with no luck.  I was informed by QBO Support after they did the work on the back end, that I would have to manually enter the chart of account numbers.  Is this a new change/update that has occurred?  I have always been able to use and then edit the default chart of account numbers provided by QB. I would appreciate any feedback / suggestions.  Thank you all!

still not resolve my problem

My account numbers are not generating, nor are showing in my chart of accounts, even though all settings are switch on

Hi there. I'm here to help you get past this, so your account number will appear on your Chart of accounts (COA).

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), we can turn the account numbers on and off. To make sure that this option is enabled, kindly follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your QBO account.
  2. Go to the Gear ⚙ icon and select Accounts and settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab and tap the Pencil icon on the Chart of accounts section.

  4. Tick Enable account numbers and put a checkmark on  Show account numbers.
  5. Once done, hit Save. Then, Done.

Enable accounts number.png

However, if the issue persists, you may access your QBO using a private browser. It could help verify any excessive data issues with your regular browser causing this matter to arise.

Here are the keyboard shortcut keys to open a private session for each browser type:

  • Safari: Command + Option + P
  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox or Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P

When you can generate your account number using a private browser, it confirms an existing data issue. Let's fix it by clearing your browser's cache and cookies

Nevertheless, if you get the same result after following all the steps, I recommend using another supported browser. You may also consider contacting our Customer Care Team to help you dig deeper into this matter and lay in a prompt resolution.

Finally, I'm adding this article that contains information regarding default accounts in COA: Manage default and special accounts in your Chart of accounts. It can also help you modify or merge accounts that can be edited and fused.

Let me know if you have additional concerns about the account numbers in COA by replying to this thread. I'm always available to assist you.
