The discontinuation of QB's desktop 2019 for Mac users

So I got the notice that the 2019 desktop version for mac was being discontinued and I had to upgrade. I called the support line and if I want to upgrade to the new desktop it would cost me $349. I do NOT want to pay that much. I feel this is their way of squeezing more money out of their customers. I also had the option of moving to the online version for $25 a month. This would mean I'd have to learn that version since it's quite different from the desktop. I also use QB's online payroll core. I just anticipate a lot of issues as any change with QB's is always a disaster.

Anybody else in my position and what are you going to do?? How do you feel about this upgrade sprung on us leaving us no choice but to have to upgrade?

Please share your thoughts. Thank you!

Your options are very limited. You will still be able to use QBD 2019 after May 2022 but you will not be able to use any online services (eg payroll, bank feed). If $350 is too much to buy a new QBD Mac Plus 2022, migrating to QB Online is another option.

The discontinuation of QB's desktop 2019 for Mac users

Hi, @Filippa. Thank you for reaching the Community. I've got some information you need concerning the discontinuation policy in QuickBooks Desktop Mac.

Here's what you need to know:

  • It will happen on May 31, 2022.
  • Access to add-ons will be disabled after May 31, 2022. This includes QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions v19 in all versions.
  • Also, access to add-on services for QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale 18.0 will be withdrawn after August 10, 2022.

Otherwise, I recommend upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop Mac subscription.

Moreover, I’ll share with you these handy resources if in case you’ll need further assistance when installing and setting up QBDT Mac 2022. This includes details about its new features:

You can always reply or reach out to us again if you need anything else with QBDT. We're always here to guide and assist whenever you need help. Have a good one!

Filippa,

I have to agree with you.  I have personally used Quicken/Quickbooks for over 25 years.  The $$ I have spent have to update to a new version is crazy.  Quicken/Quickbooks was very reasonable when they first came out.  It has gotten so expensive now.  For users who have had purchased Quicken/Quickbooks programs, I believe there should be and "upgrade" price instead of "buying" the new program every time.  I just believe since I PURCHASED the program, I should be able to upgrade instead of buying new like someone who had never purchased it before.  Same reason I went to a Mac, I was tired of upgrading MS all the time as well.  The should be different levels of pricing for long time users.  What I would like to do is find another accounting program to use but I'm afraid Intuit has the market cornered and once you are using their system, it's very hard to switch to another software.  Frustrating for sure!

@rfricano

If you are using QBD Mac/Pro/Premier, we have yet to find any reliable alternatives. All companies prefer to develop cloud-based accounting apps. No cracked license to deal with anymore.

Thank you for that insight.  I never really thought about that.  I just get so frustrated with the $$ for each purchase.  I love the product but in being such a long time user of Intuit products, there should be an "upgrade" available instead of buying the whole program...again and again and again and etc.....!!!

I too am a 25+ year user of Quickbooks and have always upgraded the product. I currently run the 2019 Desktop version, I don't subscribe to their payroll (because its way too expensive and frankly I don't trust that the data is safe with them), nor do I use any of their online banking (for the same reasons). I have looked at and done a trial of their "online" version and in a word it sucks! It looks to me like the new 2022 version is only an annual subscription and they'll ding you every year going forward for $350+. Additionally, there do not seem to be any quantifiable improvements made to warrant the upgrade and certainly no justification for the price.

I made the mistake of calling Intuit inquiring about ordering the new desktop version and of course was connected to some high pressure sales person located in a foreign country who speaks poor English at best. When she put me on hold I hung up because #1 I could barely understand her and #2 she would literally repeat EVERYTHING I said before providing me with an answer and #3 all she wanted to do was sell me on the online version. She has called me back twice already and to get her off the phone I agreed to have her call again tomorrow. Oh boy, I can't wait!

At the end of the day, I'm just going to use the 2019 version until it completely wont function anymore and when that happens I'll look for another option, and it won't be Intuit. They have completely turned me off.

So, if you do not care about all those add-ons, will your QBD for Mac still work fine?

I need just to track my expenses. To be frank, I usually use Excel to track my monthly bills and payments. I only use QBD because I need to give a file once a year to my accountant to do my taxes.

I'm fed up with all this online stuff. Everyone wants to have our data. I do not want to give my data to anyone.

If QBD 2019 for Mac Desktop will continue working, then I'll stick with that. If it won't, and there's no desktop replacement, I'll just quit using Quickbooks.

So, is there a new desktop version available? Because, if there is, I can't seem to find a way to buy it.

Thanks.

@RickHorowitz

If you run a one-time license for QBD 2019 for Mac, you should be able to use it for good as long as it supports your MacOS. It seems that they are deliberately "hiding" to offer the QBD 2023 Pro and Mac at this time.

Should you need to use one of those editions, you can purchase it through a partner/reseller.

I'm just realizing my 2019 QB for Mac desktop version is obsolete. (I'll save my rant for another time). I was downloading my account transaction history from my bank then importing to QB via webconnect. Now I'm getting an error OL-222. Is this the end for me? I can't import my transaction history from my bank? Or do you think I can still import it with a workaround of some sort? Thanks in advance if you happen to know.

@LostInBellingham

The bank feed feature is part of the online service and you cannot use it after May 2022. The 3rd party importer tool only supports QB Desktop for PC. You have to register your bank statements manually in QB Desktop 2019, upgrade to QB Desktop 2023, or convert to QB Online.

The discontinuation of QB's desktop 2019 for Mac users

Hello LostInBellingham, joining this thread to provide additional information.

I understand how important to keep QuickBooks efficient from time to time, especially continuing to bring data from the bank.

I'm here to inform you that there's a way to fix the error OL-222 and be able to import the transactions using Webconnect. I'll make sure to help you out with this.

QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 version is affected by service discontinuation. The affected services are the accountant copy transfer, contributed reports, Intuit Data Protection, and exchange rate, including online banking.

With that, I recommend using the supported version of QuickBooks for Mac. We can follow these steps to fix the error OL-222.

  1. Back up the QuickBooks company file.
  2. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  3. Use a supported version of QuickBooks.
  4. The file you downloaded from your bank is a .qbo file.

Once you have the latest version and already updated QuickBooks to the latest release, we can proceed with the steps below.

  1. Hold Control on your keyboard.
  2. Then, select the version of QuickBooks you're using. Please note that the system allows us to choose 2020, 221, and 2022.
  3. Select Download Linked File As, then save it to your desktop.
  4. Move the old FIDIR.txt to the Trash.
  5. Drag and drop the new fidir.txt file that you saved on the desktop.
  6. Import the .qbo file.

For complete steps and additional information, feel free to use this article as your reference: Fix error OL-222 in QuickBooks for Mac.

Also, you can read through the subjects in our QuickBooks for Mac user's guide to learn how to manage your bank transactions and other finances with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

Don't hesitate to post more if you have other questions about keeping your data up-to-date within QuickBooks. Take care and have a good one.

I only use Quickbook desktop for Mac to record sales and expenses. That is all. I use no online features at all. Will I still be able to use the 2019 software after it expires? I called to find out about the 2023 desktop version and was told I would need to pay over $500 YEARLY!!!! I don't use it enough to pay that kind of money. I'm no bookkeeper and the other software I've looked at looks too complicated. So will the 2019 open on my computer after May 31st?

QBD 2019 has expired since last May. Can you still run it until today?

I have been using it.  I just have to put my cc charges in myself instead of download.  To upgrade to any QB is just to expensive now.  And not sure you can even buy it anymore.  To my understanding, you can only do the online monthly now.  I'm not sure they even let you buy it anymore.  So if you do the monthly thing, it will be for life or you won't have access to your records.

I have been using Quicken/Quickbooks for so many years, it makes me sad to see how they are getting so greedy.  Mine accounting has gotten pretty simple, I may just go to a spreadsheet and call it a day!

Good luck!
