Where is the Swipe Card feature QBO

Hi,

There was an update to QBO the week of 9/11/23. After this update, the ability to "Swipe Card" when taking payment on a sales receipt disappeared and we are forced to key in the customers security code, name , address etc. We are charged 3.5% fees for this. What happened to the swipe feature? It is still there when receiving payments for invoices.

Where is the Swipe Card feature QBO

Welcome to Community space, @flytint. I recognize the need to use the Swipe Card feature seamlessly as you've been charged for this. I'm here to share some troubleshooting steps to verify what happened.

Bluetooth card readers only connect to compatible devices. Therefore, make sure it is enabled.

Once verified, turn your mobile card reader on/off. Just press and hold the power button on the side of the device until it's green. You can also take out the device from its dock before you switch it.

After that, update QuickBooks GoPayment and the Online mobile app according to your device. For Apple users, launch your App store to select Updates, then proceed to the steps below:

  1. Select Settings, then General.
  2. Tap Software Update

The support website of your device’s manufacturer has steps to help you download and install (OS) updates:

  1. Select Settings, then General.
  2. Tap Software Update.

The instruction below is for Android:

  1. Select Settings, then About device.
  2. Tap Update, then Check for Updates.
  3. Select Install.

To download and install (OS) updates, follow these steps:

  1. Select Settings, then About device.
  2. Tap Update, then Check for Updates.
  3. Select Install.

If the issue persists, take a look at Solution 4: Disconnect and reconnect the card reader from this article: Fix issues with GoPayment and QuickBooks mobile app card reader.

I'm adding some resources below for more tips on taking payments conveniently:

Please keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about utilizing the swipe card feature, I'll gladly help. Stay safe always.

This issue is for QBO on a desktop using a magstripe credit card slide device. It's not for Quickbooks GoPayment or online mobile app.

Hi there, flytint. I'm here to help you sort things out so you can seamlessly receive payments using the Swipe Card feature in the QuickBooks Online desktop app.

Are you currently signed in to QuickBooks Online using a web browser on your desktop computer? If that's the case, the reason why your desired functionality is missing is likely due to a cache issue. I suggest performing some basic troubleshooting steps to rule this out. Let's start by opening your QuickBooks Online account on a private page or incognito window. This mode won't save any browsing history. Here are the shortcut keys to open it:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

If this works, then you'll have to go back to your original page and clear your browser cache regularly. This prevents strange behavior on your webpage. Otherwise, use another supported browser for the best experience when using QuickBooks.

On the other hand, if you're using a QuickBooks Online Desktop app, I recommend refreshing the app's data to see the latest available information. An outdated app is possibly the reason for the problem. I'd like to know if you're using the QuickBooks Desktop App powered by Windows. If yes, you may need to reset the app by clicking on the Help menu and then selecting Reset App Data. (See the screenshot below for reference.)

If not, you can always drop a comment to let me know so that I can assist you and guide you on the next steps to take.

For future reference, check out this guide on how you can personalize sales forms in QBO: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have any other concerns with payments or QuickBooks. I'll be around to help further. Keep safe.

Where is the Swipe Card feature QBO

Hi,

I was with Online Support for over and hour yesterday on this issue. Their response was to key in the customers c/c information and check the "save this info" for next time. That is not a viable solution. I'm frustrated because Swiping the card used to work and stopped after the update the week of 9/12/23

Hi,

I am still not able to swipe credit cards on our reader using Sales Receipt.

I am only allowed to key in the information and be charges the maximum fees.

This is what I see after clicking the Enter Credit Card Information button. There is no Swipe Card option.

Again there was an option to swipe on sales receipt payments prior to the QBO update early September.

Hello, @flytint.

If you're using QuickBooks Payments, You must have a QuickBooks Online Mobile app to access your credit cards, but if you don't have one, you can use the GoPayment app to make cash, checks, and credit card payments using a card reader. This is a separate subscription to (QBO), but both platforms are connected to track your sales and income.

The GoPayment app will allow you to perform credit card transactions. As soon as you renew the monthly subscription to QBO, this will make it easy to track your payments. That's because the QBO application synchronizes payments that have been made with invoices.

If you're using the QuickBooks Online mobile app it will work with:

  •  iOS 14 or later
  • Android 7.1 or later

If you're using the QuickBooks GoPayment app it will work with:

  • iOS 12 or later
  • Android 4.1 or later

To learn more about accepting payments, you can check this article:  Process payments in the GoPayment app.

I appreciate you for coming back to the thread and clarifying the program you're using, flytint. Let me provide additional information about how a swipe card works when taking payment on a sales receipt. I'll also ensure you can achieve your goal smoothly.

Please keep in mind that you can still choose to swipe card on sales receipt payments in QuickBooks. However, this isn't currently possible using the QuickBooks Online desktop app. As mentioned above, you need to have a QuickBooks Online mobile app to access your credit cards. This will work once your QBO is connected with QuickBooks Payments.

If your QuickBooks isn't connected to the said payment account, you need to utilize the GoPayment app to make cash, checks, and credit card payments using a card reader to swipe credit cards or EMV-chipped cards. This app lets you take payments on the go. You can refer to this article to see extra details: Process payments in the GoPayment app.

Lastly, you may refer to this article if you need steps on how you can issue a receipt after you process a sale using GoPayment: Process payments with the QuickBooks Card Reader.

I'm always available to help if you have any more questions about managing sales receipts using swipe cards. Have a wonderful day and be safe!

Where is the Swipe Card feature QBO

Hi,

Credit Card Swiping was available on QBO Desktop up to the update in mid September. Credit Card swiping is available when when receiving payment for and Invoice.

Using the mobile app to receive a payment on the QBO desktop doesn't make sense. We create sales receipts on QBO Desktop and it not taking swiping for credit cards like when it did when we signed up is horrible.

It's hard to believe.

I'm dealing with this same problem. It's amazing how all the reps can't understand the simple fact that we don't want to use our phones process payments. From the customers point of view it looks very unprofessional.

Same issue here. I use QBO desktop for my POS transactions. We had full card swipe functionality until recently, which worked well. Now we don't. There seems to be no solution available to capture credit cards securely with QBO desktop, and Intuit seems to have disowned this as a product for POS transactions. I absolutely am not going to use my phone to process customer cards in my store, so please stop telling me that is the solution. If there is not hardware support available to process credit cards without keying them in manually, I have to find another hardware solution that doesn't involve Quickbooks Payments.

Its effing frustrating. We can accept swiped cards for payment invoices but it is a pain in a__ to do this because of all of the steps involved. As you found out QBO desktop does not support quickbooks card reader even though the reader has a cable port. Only stupid mobile app thru bluetooth. Not one idiot at QBO Chat or support could give a reason onto why this switch happened. One day credit cards can be swiped for Sales receipts and the next day no. Like all communication from this s*** company-- there was no communication.

I completely understand the inconvenience you're facing due to the changes which affect the functionality of accepting swiped cards for POS transactions, Clockguy & flytint. I'm here to provide some insights on this issue.

Please know that the card readers are designed to be compatible and functional exclusively with the QuickBooks GoPayment app, QuickBooks Online mobile app, and the QuickBooks Desktop 2021 and its newer versions. Thus, if you're using another version of QuickBooks, the card readers may not work. For more details about the card reader compatibilities, check out this article: QuickBooks Payments card reader features and compatibility.

On the other hand, if you're uncomfortable using your mobile devices to process customer card payments, I suggest sharing your feedback with our Product Development team. It can help incorporate this feature into the QBO desktop app and enhance your overall user experience. Here's how to send one:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  3. Once done, click Next to submit feedback.

Are you still having this issue?   Just wondering because I can accept credit cards for sales receipts through the QBO desktop app with the Mag Swipe reader.  If so is your App up to date?   Also I was wondering what plan you are subscribed to?  I have Essentials.   That could be any issue, perhaps the lower plans don't include that option?   And I'm not condoning that if that is the case.   That functionality is the most basic feature any accounting software should have.

I'm on QB Plus. The "Swipe" button is gone from the card input screen (just rechecked) and if I do use the magstripe, it reads the number but nothing else. I still have to enter billing/avs. I solved the problem by subscribing to a rival card processor with a standalone terminal, and by manually reconciling the daily deposits. Slightly more effort, but way less frustration, and I can actually capture signatures properly now.

I don't know what is up with Intuit. I have never encountered a vendor that has wanted my money less. With the exception of online invoicing, which is still a nice feature, QB Payments will do none of my credit card processing from now on.

Jmartz

That's really strange.  You have a higher plan than I do but the swipe card button is still on my screen.  What a hassle to manually have to reconcile the CC charges though.  That's the whole reason for using QB Payments is the auto-syncing of all those transactions and fees.

Indeed, and I was willing to pay them a premium rate for that convenience. Oh well. As a bonus I now have chip/tap functionality for my desktop POS that Intuit steadfastly refuses to supply. Remember you have potential fraud liability with magstripe that doesn't exist with chip. That alone is worth the extra hassle IMO.

Well I should have kept my mouth shut!  Yesterday I could Swipe cards with my magstripe reader for sales receipts and today I can no longer do that!  They continue to make this product worse!
