Hello, CW52.

Thank you for getting back to us. I appreciate you for following the steps above provided by my colleagues. Let's change the Chart of Accounts type using a private window. This is a special mode where the browser doesn't record the browsing activity on the local device so, no trace will be left on the computer.

Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Firefox).
  • Control + Option + P (Safari).

If you're able to make any changes in the char of account type, let's clear the cache in the web browser or try using a different supported browser. This might be a temporary issue with QuickBooks and the current browser that they're using.

However, if you still found the same issue in other browsers, I suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. They can perform a screen sharing to see the exact prompt and investigate further.

Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you need further assistance. We're always here to help. Stay safe!

Thank you for joining this thread, rodr18. Let me guide you in changing the account type for one of your accounts in QuickBooks Online.

In QuickBooks Online, you can easily change the account type in just a few steps.

If you're trying to change the account type of an existing parent account with sub-accounts, start changing each subaccount to a parent account so you can edit their account type. I'll show you how to do it. Before we do, make sure you switch to Accountant view.

To change the account type:

  1. Go to the Gear ⚙ icon, then Chart of Accounts.
  2. Locate the first subaccount to change.
  3. In the Action column dropdown menu, click Edit.
  4. Select the Save account under ▼ dropdown to choose a new account type.
  5. Choose the appropriate detail type in the Tax form section ▼ dropdown.
  6. Select Save. You are prompted that changing the Account Type may affect your accounting and reporting.
  7. Hit Yes in the prompt to change the account.

Repeat these steps for the remaining subaccounts, then change the parent account's account type. I'm adding this article for more information and to show you how to restore the accounts to subaccount status: Change the type of an existing parent account or subaccount in QuickBooks Online

Otherwise, if you're only trying to modify an existing account without any subaccount. You can go to your chart of accounts, find the account, and then proceed directly to step 3 above.

How do I change the chart of accounts type? I accidentally made a credit card account a bank account and can't change it.

We use a similar practice when we issue 1099's to vendors.

We move the item from Income to Expense, & back again after the 1099s are completed.

This year I am receiving an error

The account type is not valid for an account that is associated with a Form 1099 box.

Can you assist me in completing this change?

Hello there, Nonnie.

I'll share some details to help you change your account type successfully.

Usually, this error occurs when you're attempting to update the account type of the account that's selected in the Form 1099 box. To isolate this issue, you'll need to remove it from your 1099 form.

Here's how:

1. Go to the Expenses menu on the left pane.

2. Select the Vendors tab, then click Prepare 1099s.

3. Review the company information.

4. Click Confirm info and start filing.

4. On the Select accounts tab, find the specific account.

6. Remove the account that's required for tracking.

7. Ensure to click on Next to keep the changes.

8. Exit the window by selecting the button at the top.

Moreover, consider scanning this material to help you prepare and file federal 1099s: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Online.

How do I change the chart of accounts type? I accidentally made a credit card account a bank account and can't change it.

Welcome to the Community, @SEL5. I'm here to share details on changing your account type to expense in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When trying to change the account type, did you happen to encounter any error messages or prompts?

Upon trying here on my end, changing the account type is possible. The only thing that won't let you change the account type is when there's a sub-account included in the account.

If the account doesn't have a sub-account, we may need to troubleshoot your browser for this unusual behavior. To begin, open an incognito or private browser window. You can use the following keyboard shortcuts for the most popular browsers:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

Once you have opened the browser window, log in to your QuickBooks account and try to change the account type again. If it works, proceed to clear your browser's cache. This process removes and fixes specific issues and helps the program run flawlessly. Additionally, you can use other devices and supported browsers to ensure everything works as expected.

Additionally, you can refer to this article to record, edit, and delete expenses in the program: Enter and manage expenses in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you need further assistance with your chart of accounts. I'll be here to assist. Have a great day!
