Is there a way to produce a list of tax exempt customers?

Some of my customers are somehow in QB as tax exempt but I only know it when I create an invoice for them and "happen" to see that there is no tax on it but there should be. How do I get a list of customers taxable status so I can change the ones that are wrong? There are too many to check each one individually.

Is there a way to produce a list of tax exempt customers?

Good day, @bcotebcs.

Yes, there is an option you can use to show the list of customer's taxable status in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Simply run the Customer Contact List report and customize its filter to determine if a customer is taxable or not. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to Reports and run the Customer Contact List report.
  2. Click the Small Gear icon, then check the Taxable box.
  3. Select Run report.

Once done, you can also print this report to have a better of your data.

Moreover, you can use this article as an additional reference in customizing your report: Customize reports in QBO.

You can also memorize this report to save its customization in QuickBooks.

Should you have any follow-up questions or concerns, don't hesitate to post again here in the Community or leave a comment on this thread. Take care and have a good one.

I am having this issue as well -- Although when I pull up the report how you listed above, it shows all my customers as taxable, even though I can click on a couple examples where the customer is in fact marked as tax-exempt on their customer profiles....Can you explain how this is happening?

Hello there, @Enhearten_Finanancial. Thanks for joining the thread and providing detailed information about your concern.

Since all your customers are showing taxable on the Customer Contact List report even though set up as not taxable on their customer profile, let's isolate the issue by opening your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account in a private (incognito) window. Using a safe browser and accessing the program from there can usually fix the issue.

Check out these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Command + Shift + N (Safari)
  • Ctrl+ Shift + N (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox)

Once login, create a new customer and open the report again. Check if it's now showing customers as non-taxable. If it works, go back to your default browser and clear cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online for more information.

If the issue persists, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. For ways to connect with us, see this article: Contact the QuickBooks Online Customer Support team.

As always, please let me know how this goes or check back if you need help with QBO. I'm here for you. Have an awesome day!

I need a report of all Tax Exempt Customers (not non-taxable customers).

Thanks for joining this conversation, @AshleyWur.

I can help you show the tax-exempt customer's report in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. On the search bar, type Customer Contact List.
  3. Click the small Gear icon.
  4. Select Show more, then check the Taxable box.
  5. Hit Run report.

You'll see a customer with a Yes in a Taxable column. If you don't want to include the non-taxable customer, you can manually check it under the Customize report window. I'll show you how:

  1. Click the Customize button.
  2. Under Filter, click the Customer dropdown arrow.
  3. Put a checkmark beside the customer's name.
  4. Click Run report.

Also, you may pull up the Sales Tax Liability report to get a detailed look at the taxes you owe. This is to make sure everything is correct before you file and pay your sales tax return.

Do you have other questions? Post them below, and I'll get back to you.

My edition (Desktop Pro 2022) does not have that gear icon. When I click on the "filters" I can see that Resale is an option, but it want a specific # added to create the filter.

I have Desktop Pro 2022 and the gear icon is not available. When I choose the "filter" option, "Resale" is there, but it wants a specific # to add to the list.

Can you provide an updated version of this process for the new version of Quickbooks? There is no "taxable" option under the Columns heading or in the upper gear box.

Welcome to the Community, @Paloma1983.

Thanks for reaching out to us. If you're referring to the new view of the Customer Contact list report, the tax status option is currently unavailable. I suggest you submit feedback directly to our Product Engineers, as they are responsible for adding features in the future.

Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under the Profile column, select Feedback.
  3. Enter your feedback or suggestions.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Choose Feedback for the category.
  6. Click Send.

You can also use this link to send your feedback: Customer Feedback for QuickBooks Online.

As of now, the only workaround we can do to use the tax status option is to switch to the classic view.

Please let me know if you have other QBO-related concerns. I'm here to lend a hand. Have a good day.
