I can see the value of adding your 5.4k items to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @esloz. Rest assured that I've got an alternative method to take care of this issue.
You're on the right track in performing the workarounds provided by my peer above. Since these didn't work on your end, I'd suggest looking for a third-party app that can integrate with QBDT. This way, you'll have the option to import your 5.4k items into the program. It will help you start your production for this coming season to increase your revenue. I'll guide you how.
The screenshot below shows you the second to fifth steps.
Once imported, you can use those 5.4k items when creating your sales transactions, such as invoices. Doing so will help you manage your sales and accounts receivable in the software.
I'm always here to lend you a helping hand if you need anything else. Take care always, @esloz.
Thank you @RaymondJayO for another impractical, and honestly useless solution. I did not see one app that offered an import feature for items, all are mainly for expenses, banking, and things we do not need. And the one that has a slim chance to possibly do what Quickbooks should do is $95. Will Quickbooks credit or refund the cost that is associated with having to purchase an unnecessary product? Not to mention the time we have to invest into setting it up and learning how to use it. The only way I can "rest assured" is knowing that this fix is at the highest priority for Quickbooks' engineers.
This is not what we want you to feel, @ esloz.
Once you purchase an application that integrates with QuickBooks. In regards to a refund, you’ll have to reach our support to check the validity of the settlement.
One of them will be able to work with you further regarding the information that you need. I'm adding the detailed steps below on how you can reach them:
1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
2. Click the Help tab at the top menu bar.
3. Click QuickBooks Desktop Help.
4. Click Contact Us.

The 3rd party apps don't work either. I spent $100 on one of them, and it exports fine. Importing says successful, but nothing is added to database. PLEASE FIX THIS QB. This has been going on since SEPTEMBER. 8 months!
Hello there, @capandhitch2.
I appreciate you letting us know of the result after using a third-party application. This isn't the kind of experience I want for you when using the inventory feature.
I’ve checked with my tools and the investigation is still open. Our engineers are all hands on deck working towards finding a permanent solution. Rest assured when an update is available, I’ll post here in the Community so other users will know how to fix the problem.
In regard to your other concern, I suggest contacting the third-party app. They'll be able to look into this further and see why nothing is added to the database.
You can bookmark the Customer Resource Center for QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise page for future reference. It contains articles and tools to productivity tools to help improve your experience when using the product's features.
Reach out to me if you have any other concerns or questions. I’ll be right here to answer them for you. Have a good one.
Its not working because QB IS BROKEN. I tried with a backup company file on QB 2019 with no issues, so its not the 3rd party software. IT IS BECAUSE QB IS BROKEN. Still. 8 Months later. Broken. Useless. Cannot update pricing on THOUSANDS of our products since we bulk update thousands at a time. Very glad we pay $400 for a program that doesn't work as advertised.
There's a workaround I discovered albeit not perfect.

Going to "Add/edit multiple entries" is not a viable solution. Nor is the export/import of IFF files. There has been an open case for this for MONTHS, with multiple patches adding unneeded features or unnecessarry fixes for much smaller issues.
Again, this is still happening when doing a fresh install, on a fresh OS, using the supplied QuickBooks sample file. This is completely unacceptable.
Advanced Import is a critical module for our company to run efficiently. Prior versions workes fine. I would think this should be an easy fix IF QB would just dedicate the resources necessary to fix it.
We use Zed Axis for all kinds of imports and exports. Try it, there is a trial version. (and no I don't work for them or get a commission or anything, it just helps us....)
Anyone with an attorney in the family or knowledge about starting a Class Action lawsuit vs Intuit? I'd totally join that lawsuit.
I agree with a previous post about this not really being in there top priority fixes and this is hurting my business profit margin as I can't update cost/prices of thousands of items. Their workarounds are a joke, and QB can't fix a bug for 7 months now? Come on!!
I'm sure they're developing 2021 with this fix and just waiting us off and probably tell us to update. But that's too many months ahead (besides the obvious cost of upgrading)!!
Hi quickbooks team, its been another 4 WEEKS, figured i'd check in. Would be nice if you could just tell everyone if your product is broken so we can make other choices instead of losing $ on sales since we cannot update pricing. This has been going on since SEPTEMBER 2019, thats 10 MONTHS. WTF are you doing about this? ive paid you over $4000 since then for my 1 small business, surely somebody on your developement team can fix this if you actually cared.
I understand the need for you to update the pricing of your items, @capandhitch2.
I've checked the status of the investigation about the issue, and I found out that it is still in progress. Our product engineers are working hard to find a permanent fix. You'll receive an update once you called our support team and added your name as one of the affected users.
Also, feel free to visit our Help articles page in case you got other QuickBooks concerns, such as setting up advanced reports, online banking, manage reconciliation, transactions, import and export data lists, etc.
Fill me in if you have other QuickBooks concerns, capandhitch2. The Community team always got your back.
Found a actual walk around that works to update existing items. Cant import new, but can update existing. Reach out to me, easy enough to find by my name and im upset enought w QB that id rather they not know since they haven't cared about this problem for 10 months.

Jeff @ capandhitch
So somebody posts a legit work around, and its removed by moderator? Whats up with that?
Thanks again Ramon!
Removed by moderator?
Guess they don't like solutions...
Thanks again Roman!
Intuit, may i ask why you would remove a solution to a problem?
Hello there, @ capandhitch2.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I've reached out to our management team for help with investigating what had happened on the previously posted workaround.
Our moderators will remove any details that contain personal information on the thread.
If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comment section down below. I'm always around to help.
Has this problem been resolved? What is the solution.
This problem has not been solved. We ended up ending our relationship with quickbooks over this and a few other things. Sadly enough we have to keep a working copy of QB for a year and we have continue to pay for it.
Hey there, @S_Kuhn.
Thanks for joining in on this thread. At this time, the investigation is still in progress. However, our Product Engineers are working hard to resolve this problem as soon as possible.
You can contact our Customer Support Team to be added to a list of affected users so that you can receive email updates on this matter. Here's how:
If you run into any trouble, just let me know. Take care!
Not solved, they have only had 11 months to fix it...
To update existing inventory, you have to make a new mapping, but DONT map COGS/Income Account/Asset account and you can import to update pricing/descriptions etc. It will not work to add new inventory as those 3 accounts are required.
I sincerely hope this is fixed for the next version release. This is ridiculous. 11 months with one of the most commonly used features for those who spend the extra $ for enterprise version is still not working. The product was released broken. This is completely unacceptable.
Same cut and paste Quickbooks response I've seen for months.
You need some new engineers.
