How to sort account quick report by the amount

Hi

I have a question, it's year ending and I need to check most of the transactions for a couple of months ago.  Is there a way to sort them by the amount?

For example, I need to find two identical amounts one with minus as it was an expense and the other one is with plus as it was an income. Like -50.00 and 50.00. Usually, I have the delay between expense and income in 2 months.

I really hope there is some way to sort it.

Thank you

How to sort account quick report by the amount

It's great to have you again here in the Community, fpbinvestor123.

Thanks for sharing detailed information and example on how you want to run the Account Quickreport in QuickBooks Online. Allow me to provide some insight about this and guide you through.

The option to automatically sort this report by amount is currently unavailable. As a workaround, you'll want to place the amount column in the first part, then sort it by descending or ascending order.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Accounting in the left panel, choose Chart of Accounts
  2. Locate the account you need, then select Run Report from the View Register drop-down.
  3. In the Report period fields, enter the dates you want.
  4. Click the Customize button and expand the Rows/Columns section.
  5. Select the Change columns link.
  6. Under the Select and reorder columns section, drag the Amount box to the top by pressing and holding the 9-dotted square
  7. Click Run Report (see screenshot 1 below).
  8. When your back in the Account QuickReport page, choose the Sort arrow and pick Ascending or Descending (see screenshot 2).

We recognize that each company has unique needs and I can see how having the ability to sort reports by amount would empower your business. I'll prepare a feedback statement to send to our product engineers.

You can also let your voice be heard by sending it directly to them as a suggestion. This way, they'll be aware of the changes we both want to see in the future.

To submit yours, just go to the Gear icon, then select Send Feedback Online

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have other questions in mind. Have a great day!

This workaround no longer seems to be working. Is there an alternative? I find sorting by amount a very useful way to view and find specific items.

Glad to have you here, @Anonymous!

Let me share additional information and help you sort the amounts of transactions of your reports.

First, if you're still unable to sort the amounts of your transaction after following the steps above, let's access your account in a new incognito or private window of your browser. This way, we can check if it's not a browser error.

After that, open and customize your reports by following the steps above. If you can successfully sort the amounts of your transactions, you can clear your browser's cache. This optimizes your browser's performance and improves your browsing experience with QuickBooks Online.

If ever your still unable to sort the amounts of your transactions, let's switch to a new browser application. From there, access your account and then customize your reports with the same steps shared by @VivienJ above.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about your reports in QuickBooks Online. I'll be always around to lend a helping hand.

I also am unable to sort by amount because "Amount" is not an option in the Sort list.

Hi, JMH.

Allow me to share some information about sorting an account quick report by the amount via QuickBooks Online.

Sorting an account quick report by the amount is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Online. For now, as a workaround, you can sort account by the amount through the register.

Here's how:

  1. Click Accounting in the left panel.
  2. Go to Chart of Accounts.
  3. Choose an account and click View register.
  4. You can sort the amount by click the Payment column in the Bank Register.

I'll be sure to take note of your suggestion about the sorting options in QuickBooks Online. You may find this article helpful: How to change the sort order of chart of accounts.

Thanks for chiming in, @Julie102962.

Are you trying to sort a quick report for an expense account by amount? If so, my colleague @VivienJ provided detailed steps on how to do this in this thread. If you're unable to see it, let me show you how:

1. Go to Accounting at the left pane, then Chart of Accounts
2. Select Run Report under Action column for the expense account.

3. Click the Customize button at the upper right and go to the Rows/Columns section.
4. Select the Change columns link.

5. Under the Select and reorder columns section, drag the Amount box to the top by pressing and holding the 9-dotted square.

6. Hit Run Report.

When your back in the Account QuickReport page, choose the Sort arrow and pick Ascending or Descending.

For future reference, consider check out this article: How to customize reports.

That should do it. Keep me posted on how it goes or if you need anything else. I'm more than happy to help.

This is not working for me.  Even though I have the amount in the first column, switching the sort order still uses the date as the sorted column.

Thanks for following the steps above, @craigbellot.

If you're still unable to sort the quick report by amount, you can try exporting it to Excel and customize it from there as a workaround. This can be done by clicking the Export icon and selecting Export to Excel.

That should you back on the right track. I'm also going to send feedback to our Product Developers so they can take a look at this and fix it for you.

Please let me know how everything goes in the comment. I'll be here if should you need further assistance. Have a great day!

Welcome to QuickBooks Community, AlexPais.

As what RoseMarjorieA mentioned above, sorting an account quickreport by the amount is currently unavailable. It only allows you to sort by date.

I'll surely forward your suggestion to our developers. Rest assured your voice will be heard, and they'll consider implementing this in the future.

Let me know if you have other concerns about reports.

How to sort account quick report by the amount

It looks like sort by amount has not been added yet -- June 2020.  It's really needed, and it's a basic function.  I have to export into a spreadsheet and sort there, then go back into QuickBooks to update, then do a new spreadsheet and turn that into a report.  That's a lot of extra steps and a surprising and disappointing gap for a program that usually shows good planning and functionality.

Hello, @christopherjhoh

That feature is still unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO), the ability to sort the report by amount. I can see that it would be a great addition to the current features that we have. In the meantime, you can try all the workarounds they provided above.

I'd also recommend you visiting our Blog to learn what new updates and features we have.

Here's more information on how to run reports in QuickBooks Online. Also, the following article on how to customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Stay in touch if you have other concerns by leaving a comment below. I'm always glad to help in any way I can. Have a great rest of the day.

Really needed !!! I agree. I guess we cant dream of having the report sort on a range of the amount, like < or > or between .... I opened an account and thinking if i shouldn't look somewhere before its too late, its scary to see that simple issue reported in 2019 and on year later still the same reply...we will report it to 'our engineers'

I truly can't believe that sorting my amount in an accounting program is a novel idea and I further can't believe that it takes over a year to add.

It is Very Frustrating and disappointing that such an easy and simple feature is so difficult for the "engineers" to put it in the software.

Shame on you QuickBooks

Hello,

QB online PLEASE try to come up with a function to sort by amounts.  We have deadlines at month-end, and any time cut short to do a function is extremely helpful!

FYI, this no longer works.  I tried to follow these steps in an account quickreport, and it still sorts by Date even through the amount was the first column on the report.  There is still no option to sort by amount.

Hi ps aarya!

Let me show you how to run the report that shows the data you need.

QuickBooks Online has a Transaction List by Customer report. This will show you your transactions grouped by customer. We can also filter it if you need data from a specific client.

  1. Go to the Reports menu, then search and select Transaction List by Customer.
  2. Click the Customize button. From the Filter section, search the client's name under the Customer drop-down.
  3. Tap Run report.

Need more help in making it more presentable? Here's how to customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

Agreed, this is absurd. QuickBooks, it doesn't hurt anyone to expedite this. It doesn't mess anything up. It gives BASIC ******* functionality to folks who need quick re-orientation. It's halfway despicable to insist people use a third party program to open up a spreadsheet exported by your program JUST to be able to Sort.

WTF? Seems there's no shortage of trying to upsell me on added functionality, but when there's some completely obvious thing I need we have to wait in the lurch while you pretend software engineers are sweating over a few lines of code.

Going to start looking for other solutions, I'm no longer a fan of McQuickBooks. This example is but one of many little teensie features that seem odd to be eschewed from user access.  Two thumbs down.
