Turn off tags

This is a known issue since at least September. Why is this still not resolved?

1) You'll want to ignore the tags field as of the moment while waiting for this to be removed.

Just ignoring it is not an option. It screws up the workflow. If you spend 100 hours a week on entering data and suddenly you have to tab-tab-tab, it does not work. I keep on entering data into the tag field that belongs in other fields. Then I have to back track and delete it and put it in the right field. It really slows me down significantly.

Plus the confused clients and Employees!!! I have wasted so much time on trying to explain this feature to clients and employees and trying to make sure they don't use it byu accident until Intuit finally fixes the issue a year later.

2) At the moment, tags are being rolled out to 50% of all QuickBooks Online (QBO) users.

Rolled out to 50%... Why not to all? There is an issue.. you know about it... fix it

This issue has not spared a single one of my 50+ clients accounts, what are the chances?!

Why not focus on rolling out the new bank / reconciliation center to everyone. That is a really great and useful feature. Why waste time on rolling out a feature that doesn't work and it appears 99% of the users want to get rid off?

3) For now, you'll want to reach out to our agents so you and your client can be added to the list of affected users.

Well, your agents tell us that the issue is being worked on and they are not reporting or adding company IDs to the list.

Very much looking forward to a TRUE resolution!

I'm also VERY frustrated with this feature.  I want it gone as soon as possible.  Why would half of us get stuck without the option to turn it off anyway??

Thanks for joining this thread, VLW57.

As some of my colleagues have mentioned, there's an ongoing investigation about the ability to turn tags off. If you're able to use the feature in your books, currently there isn't a method for disabling it.

On December 8, 2020, our Product Investigations Team informed that Intuit's engineers are working diligently to get an option for turning it off added inside of QuickBooks. I thank yourself and others for your patience.

In the meantime, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care Team and referencing the investigation's case number (INV-52514). They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research, and add you to the list of affected users. This ensures that you'll receive email updates about what's going on with our investigation. Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

I'll be here to help if there's any questions. Have a wonderful day!

I am also having the same issue.

I have followed the exact instructions.

My TAGS toggle button was already off.

I have several clients, and all are showing off, but ALL are still showing tags and I have to tab through the TAGs part every entry, which is A LOT for me.

Please help us  get these TAGS turned off.

I've logged out, restarted, ect. They are still on  even tho labs shows them off.

Thanks for bringing this one to our attention, BlueJeans7.

I appreciate you for performing some troubleshooting steps to get this sorted out. In this case, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Support Team. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and investigate what's causing this issue. Though the INV-52514 is already closed, our engineers will check this case again. Then our support agent will add you to the list of affected users and send you an email notification once there's an update on this one.

You may send a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead. I don't even have the tags option when I go to Quickbooks Labs.  This means I have no way to turn the tags off.  Please fix this

I've got some insights about the tags feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @HJS44.

Right now, tags is in its beta or test stage. It's being rolled out to 50% of all QBO users. The other 50% have the option to turn the tags feature on or off in Labs.

Thus, you're unable to see the said option on your end. Rest assured, our product developers are actively working on this one to provide a timely fix.

For now, I'd encourage you to visit our QuickBooks blog site to keep abreast with the current news and product enhancements.

Lastly, you have the option to customize QuickBooks to work the way you want it to. You'll just have to perform a couple of tweaks on the settings page. Please head to this link to get started: Edit company settings.

Can any Accountant users confirm the ability to turn Tags off.  I have 40 wholesale clients and NONE of them have the ability to turn it off.   I don't believe Quickbooks is trying to fix it.

Welcome to the thread, @carlwcpa.

To answer your question, it's yes. You, as an accountant user, can turn off the tag feature by going to your client's account.

Here's how:

  1. Open your client's company file.
  2. Click the Gear icon at the top.
  3. Tap QuickBooks labs.
  4. Go to the Tags section and toggle it off.
  5. Hit Yes to confirm.

Repeat the above steps for the other client's.

Hi MirriamM,

the option to toggle on/off has not worked in the past.

I was hopeful that QuickBooks finally fixed the issue and checked around 20 of my client accounts. Now the option for tags has actually disappeared from QuicKBooks Labs.

I saw it before (even though it never worked), but now the option is all together gone. No toggle switch, no Tag mention in the labs section under the gear icon...

Now that would be exciting, if indeed the Tags field had disappeared along with it.

But unfortunately, the annoying tags field still show up on every transaction for each one of the 20+ clients I checked.

I have been told for month that QBO is working on a fix, I have been promised that a fix was being rolled out by the end of that week (sometime in the distant past). Nothing has changed, yet QBO employees repeatedly post the same instructions that do not work.

Why not go back to a previous software version where the tag feature did not even exist...? We don't want it!

Put your efforts into upgrading the banking feature for ALL clients. Having instant access to bank statements, now that is an AWESOME feature.

@MirriamM , and ALL other Intuit Moderators and "Team" that might decide to post, READ THE ABOVE POST BY YOUR COLLEAGUE!!

There is supposedly an ongoing investigation. (INV-52514).  They are well aware of the issue. It isn't a priority, to them, so there is no rush for them to fix it.  You can contact Intuit, give them the investigation number, and be added to the list of affected users.

MirriamM, I will apologize in advance...
but I swear... you are at least the 20th QB
person to just copy and paste:

"To turn TAGS off...JUST
Click the Gear icon at the top.
Tap QuickBooks labs.
Go to the Tags section and toggle it off.
Hit Yes to blah blah blah"

 Those instructions do not work.
I'm just glad they didn't add the field to the register.

Thank you for listening.

Hello, @carlwcpa.

I'm so sorry for the repeated information, these threads can get long!

Let me share with you what I know about this.  If you're unable to turn this off in labs, at this point you won't be able to disable it. Our engineers are aware of this and are working on getting the option added to Account and Settings.

As always you can check out our blog, to see the newest changes within QuickBooks.

I'm happy to help with anything else you have questions about!  Please don't hesitate to reach back out, I'm just a post away, Take care!

The reason it's not been fixed is that they don't actually care about their users. It's the same "Product Design" geniuses who decided to get rid of the totals at the bottom of general ledger entries (in Desktop). They care about what's in and what looks nice. Accounting?  Efficiency?  Managing costs by not blowing time on useless extra fields and/or cleaning up Quickbooks errors when it decides to fill in 75 entries with the wrong detail?  Horrors!  Passe!

I'm afraid the only thing that will make QB's actually listen to their users will be if said users leave. As for me, I'll be recommending Xero to my next client. (They also allow you to link Stripe to the system, just like a bank, and without paying through the nose for an extension.  It's time to make the leap.  Quickbooks is just too big to listen.

The Tags section does not appear in my Quickbooks Lab list. I would like to get rid of the "tags", but apparently that isn't an option for me?

At this point, I am convinced Quickbooks has absolutly no intention of removing the TAGS field from the data entry screens.  It's just another crappy sales gimic - that is in the way of the professionals.

Thank you for posting the steps.  Unfortunately, this option does not even show up under the Labs tab.  Tags are a great option for some of my clients, but it's a huge slow down for those that don't need it.  Hope you're still working on getting this resolved.

Hi Mophetmom,

Since you're still getting the same issue, I'd recommend reaching out to our Phone Support team. One of our agents can do a screen-share with you and verify what's causing this matter.

You can contact them by clicking the ? Help icon.

I'm just a post-away if you need help. Keep safe!

Or, @Adrian_A , you could read above, where I have pointed out that it is a KNOWN ISSUE, with an inv #.  Now, though, they have NO intensions of fixing, removing, or changing.

Phone support just always says, "That's strange, our instructions say this should work..."
Yet the TAG field will not go away on data entry screens.

Clients keep getting confused by it.  They keep enter garbage and worthless info into it that we must go back and explain, fix, get rid of, etc.

Hi, same here, this week out of the blue, the stupid 'TAGS' field appeared out of nowhere even though the option in 'lab' is OFF.

I cannot get rid of it!

Quickbooks, please when you say we can turn OFF something that we DON'T WANT & DON'T NEED, please give us the option to be able to ACTUALLY TURN IT OFF!!!

Very frustrating and time consuming, time I DON'T have!

I found this old thread while trying to find a way to turn the Tag feature off when entering Expenses.  Unfortunately, when I go to my Settings_Quickbooks labs, Tags is no longer an option.  I only have QB Themes; Cash Flow Dashboard Widget; Import Style and Turn on community reports.

     Can Tags still be disabled?
