How to view tax rate in QBO

Allow me to share details on how you can mange sales tax rates, gardeningincarli.

QBO uses the Automated Sale Tax feature. Taxes are automatically calculated based on the business and buyer's location. This is the reason why there's no option to view or edit tax rates.

On the Sales Tax Settings page,  you can see a list of tax agencies. The program uses the tax rates from these agencies in generating sales tax when creating sales transactions. I'll share the steps on how to view the tax rate used by the agency. Here's how:

  1. Click the + New button and select Invoice or Sales receipt.
  2. Select a customer, then enter an item in the Product/Service column.
  3. Check the box for Tax.
  4. Look for the See the math link just below the sales tax amount.
  5. The tax rate and basis of the calculation are indicated in the Location and address section.

Just in case the location is incorrect, just click the Edit button and select the right one.

Aside from that, you can use this site to get the rate used in your location: Sales Tax Calculator. Just type in the address and it will tell you what rate is used by QBO in invoices and sales receipts.

Alternatively, there's also an option to set up and use custom tax rates. Here's how:

  1. Go back to the Sales tax section of the invoice or sales receipt.
  2. Click the drop-down rate for Sales tax rate and select Add rate.
  3. Type in the name, agency, and tax rate.
  4. Choose Save

Once done, you can now use a different rate when making sales transactions instead of the automated one.

How to view tax rate in QBO

Whilst I appreciate your response, it falls short in addressing the greater problem. It would make more sense to display the tax rate on the Sales tax center page. Why should a user have to create a fake invoice, follow additional steps, just to view the tax rate? Since you created and pushed the Automated Tax feature on your unsuspecting users, we have been manipulated as beta testers. We are not beta testers. We are small business and non-profit volunteers who have better things to do with our time than to navigate endless workarounds to QBO's product deficiencies. I spent 5 hours yesterday with customer care trying to resolve problems with the Automated Sales tax feature, a feature I neither wanted nor chose. It apparently was pushed upon the user community with absolutely no regard for our needs. This is consistent with all my experiences with QBO - you simply don't care about your users. You fail to fix known software bugs after weeks, months and even years of reporting by your user community. This simple request is a perfect example. The tax rate should be displayed on the Sales tax screen, not buried somewhere in an invoice. Here is yet another endless workaround to a problem that should be fixed and tested in software. QBO developers wake up and do your job.

How to view tax rate in QBO

I appreciate your feedback about how the Automated Sales Tax feature works, @gardeningincarli.

I understand the need to view the tax rate in QuickBooks Online (QBO). As mentioned by my colleague above, this option is currently unavailable in QBO since taxes are calculated automatically.

I can see how the feature you're looking for would benefit and empower your business. In the meantime, I recommend sending this request straight to our product engineers through feedback.

To send feedback, follow the below steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top.
  2. Select Feedback.
  3. Enter your comments or product suggestions.
  4. Then select Next to submit feedback.

How to view tax rate in QBO

For companies like ours, who do not charge tax as we do not sell products or taxable services, can we just turn this off?!  All the error messages are so annoying.  Please tell me there is a way.

How to view tax rate in QBO

Your participation in the Community forum is greatly valued, @suzannek1. Thank you for always dropping by. I'll be sharing information regarding the Automated Sales Tax feature.

It would be nice to perform any activities in QuickBooks without challenges to experience. Currently, the option to turn off the Automated Sales Tax isn't available in QuickBooks Online. I suggest sending feedback to our software engineers. They may consider adding this to our future improvements. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Click the Gear icon, then choose Send Feedback
  3. Type in a brief description of your feature request.
  4. Select Next to submit.
