Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

Each year, our firm uses TurboTax Business to complete and file our company's taxes.  And each year, we are able to import all our company's financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business, instead of having to manually enter it all.

Up until this year, TurboTax prompts us to select the Quickbooks file we wish to import.

This year, that option is not available in TurboTax Business.

Instead, the two options that TurboTax Business offers are:

"Yes.  Let's import from Quickbooks to save time." and

"No thanks.  I'll enter my Quickbooks info manually."

You would think that the option, "Yes.  Let's import from Quickbooks to save time" would be the option to select.

However, when we select that option, and then click "Continue", we get the following screen:

"Quickbooks Desktop Not Installed.", with the comments, "No Quickbooks Desktop files has been found" and "Continue Without Importing".  See the attached screenshot.

Rest assured that Quickbooks Desktop is very much installed.

As noted above, in past years, we have been able to search for the Quickbooks file we wish to import.

This year, that is not possible.  TurboTax Business does not provide the opportunity to search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import.

I contacted TurboTax customer support, explained the above, and was told that it was a Quickbooks issue, and that I had to contact Quickbooks customer support.

Of course when I contacted Quickbooks customer support, I was told it was a TurboTax issue and that I had to contact TurboTax customer support.

Interestingly, when I told the TurboTax people that this was the first year we could not search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import, they seemed unfazed by it all, and said that they couldn't help us.

So I am reaching out to the community in the hope that someone can help us find a way to search for and select the Quickbooks file we wish to import into TurboTax Business.

Which QB Desktop year version do you have in your computer?

Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

I've got you covered, @DRH204. Let me make it up to you by making sure you get the best help available, so this gets sorted out right away. I'll also share some details about importing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) tax information into TurboTax.

In situations like this, we’ll have to review your QBDT account setup. The process requires us to open your account, which I’m unable to perform here in the Community since this is a public forum and for security reasons.

Before reaching out to them, please take note of the following tips:

  • QuickBooks should be installed on the same local drive as TurboTax (not networked) and need to be registered.
  • You'll need QuickBooks Administrator access.
  • The QuickBooks company file (.qbw filename extension) must be in single-user mode and should've been opened at least once on the computer you're using to import (no need to leave it open during the import).
  • QuickBooks for Mac data must be converted to Windows before it can be imported (instructions).
  • Be sure to update your QuickBooks data before importing, so that your books match your tax return.

For more details and steps about importing your QuickBooks data to TurboTax, please see these articles:

Nonetheless, I highly suggest contacting our Customer Care Team to check your account securely. I understand you've already reached out to them. However, it would be best to contact them again with this matter. Please check out the steps outlined in this article and to see their operating hours: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.

You're always welcome to get back to me if you need further assistance sending your tax information to TurboTax. I'm always here to help. Have a good one!

Thanks, Kevin_C.  Unfortunately, that did not fix the issue.

I had previously tried what you had recommended, but nonetheless, I still tried it again.  However, the outcome is still the same:  TurboTax replies with "No Quickbooks Desktop file has been found."

I would like to be able to search for and select the actual Quickbooks file, instead of letting TurboTax search for it.  As noted previously, in all previous versions of TurboTax, we were able to search for and select our company's Quickbooks file.  Do you know of a way to do it in TurboTax Business 2023?  And do you know why Intuit decided to remove that functionality in this year's version of TurboTax Business?

@DRH204

Do you know of a way to do it in TurboTax Business 2023?

Install the trial version of QB Desktop 2023 Enterprise to make sure.

Thanks, 4Gal.  What do you mean by "to make sure"?  By so doing, what would that accomplish/test/verify?

Use the same year version of QB Desktop and TurboTax.

Hi, MarkAngeloG,

Thanks very much for your message.

To confirm, we are not using TurboTax Online; we are using the desktop version.

Are you able to confirm that in TurboTax Business 2023 I should be able to search and select the Quickbooks file to import into TurboTax?

No one at Intuit has yet been able to say that feature is availalbe in the 2023 version, as it has been available in previous versions. Each person I have spoken to at Intuit has said the equivalent of, "Oh, I guess so" when I tell them I cannot search for and select our company Quickbooks file.

But no one has been able to say, "That's weird; you should be able to search for and select your company's Quickbooks file", or "Yes, that's right. They've removed that functionality in this year's TurboTax."

If someone at Intuit could formally clarify whether I should or should not be able to search and select our company's Quickbooks file, that would be super helpful.

Good Afternoon DRH204,

Welcome to the Quickbooks Community! For that question, I believe it would be best to talk to our TurboTax Team, seeing they would have more information.

Let me know how it goes! I will be here if you have any other questions.

Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

I have contacted TurboTax support, and the person I spoke to, Ken, has taken ownership of the issue; Ken said he would look further into it.  Ken is aware that anyone using TurboTax should be able to search for and select their Quickbooks file.  He does not know why in TurboTax Business 2023 one cannot do that.  He said he would try to find out why (is it a bug or is it a deliberate software change - which would be bizarre for Intuit to do the latter), and would get back to me.

I contacted TurboTax support, and spoke with Ken.  Ken took ownership of the issue.  Although he could not explain why TurboTax this year does not allow a user to search for and select their company's Quickbooks file, he said he would look into it further, speak with the powers that be, and see what he could find out.  He did note that it wouldn't make sense for Intuit to suddenly this year prevent TurboTax users from searching for, selecting, and importing their company's Quickbooks data.

Still no answer from TurboTax customer support.

Does anyone know why TurboTax Business 2023 does not allow you to search for, select and import your company's Quickbooks data file?

Importing tax/financial data from Quickbooks into TurboTax Business

Hi there, @DRH204.

Let me chime in and share information about this matter.

Since you're going to import your QuickBooks Desktop company file in the TurboTax Business 2023, there are requirements you need to take note of.

First, ensure that your QuickBooks Desktop version installed is on a Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) operating system and located on the same computer as TurboTax. Next, check your file menu and switch your access to Single-user Mode. Afterward, you have to save your company file on the local computer. Your files might have been stored on a server, making it challenging to locate them.

Once done, you can start searching and importing your QuickBooks company file into TurboTax to process and manage your taxes.

Additionally, if you want other resources to prepare and submit your returns in TurboTax, you can browse some topics and articles through this page: File taxes.

You can comment back if you have other questions about importing company files to TurboTax or have other QuickBooks-related inquiries. Our team is always ready to help and assist you. Happy Holidays!

I appreciate people chiming in, but please be mindful of the duplicate posts.

All of the suggested have been verified and done.

The issue at hand is the following (and please do not address something else in your comment):

TurboTax Business 2023 does not provide the user the opportunity to search for, select, and import the company's Quickbooks file.

My question since the beginning of all this is: Why is this functionality not available in this year's version?

To be clear, I am focusing on the ability to search for and and select our company's Quickbooks file (just like one might search for a file you wish to attach to an email).

That functionality has been available in previous versions of TurboTax Business.  For some reason, it is not available in this year's version.

No one at Intuit/TurboTax has been able to explain why.

I couldn't find any other similar issue until now. Have you tried installing the trial version of QB Desktop 2023 as mentioned earlier?

In TurboTax, if you go to the File>Import menu from the top bar, it only has the option of importing from QB 2022-2024.   So apparently they aren't supporting older versions of QB.   I'm also using QB2021 and not planning to upgrade it so looks like the only option is manual entry.

Seems Intuit is really trying to force everyone to their subscription based QB model.

@mdk520

You can use the rial version of QBD 2022-2024 as a workaround.

Just installed TT Business today and getting the same problem, not importing from QB Desktop Pro 2020.

If TT will not import from QB, I don't really see any need to even buy/use TT?

May have to look into the 60 day money back guarantee if TT will force you to do entries manually.

If TT doesn't provide answer on this discussion, let's assume they do not want to honor desktop software from before.  You should not be calling multiple CS to chase this issue.  If there is an answer, should be answered here instead of keep telling you to call someone and be told no answers or will look into it.

If no solutions given here, maybe better to get money back and use any cheapest available option for biz taxes.

Maybe a lot of entries for complex corps, but for simple S corp, can just printout report on P&L and Balance Sheet and manually enter the numbers.

Intuit will be losing lots of small biz with all their 2023 moves on QB and TT.

Thanks for the suggestion.  When I try to do that, nothing happens.

I do:  File - Import - From Quickbooks, and nothing happens.  No prompt, no option to select a file.  Nothing.

What in the world is Intuit doing??

Could you please provide the link to the trial version.  I could find only a trial desktop version for Canada, or the Desktop Enterprise 24.0, but no Desktop Pro version.
