You can log out of QuickBooks Online by clicking the Gear icon (⚙) in the top-right corner of any screen and selecting 🔒Sign Out. I'm including an image below that displays this option:

Welcome to the community, @StopChangingThings.
In some situations, Quickbooks behave unexpectedly due to browser-related issues.
To confirm this, let's first use a private or incognito window. Then, perform necessary troubleshooting on your main browser. Here's how:
2. Log in to your QuickBooks Online.
3. Go to the Settings icon at the top right.
4. Verify if the Sign Out option is available. Then, click it to log off.
If that works, you'll need to fix your browser by clearing its cache. Here's a great article for your reference: How to clear browser cache and temporary Internet files?. A clean browser also makes the loading time faster.
If none of the steps above worked for you, I'd suggest you use another browser.

@StopChangingThings , couldn't agree more! Seems like every week, I log in and something has moved / is gone / doesn't work the way it used to. I'm sure they see what they're doing as improvements, but it's SO FRUSTRATING!
I can not log off, was trying to go into my company file that has not been used in 3 years, I allowed QB to update the file then it went into an online file that has me locked, can't get out ot the QB live file or get to QB. How do I proceed?
Hi, taj26.
Nice to have you in the Community. I'm happy to help you fix your locked-out issue.
I have some information on how to recover your login information. If you have access to the phone number or email address on file, you can get back into your account within minutes. Let me walk you through how.
After logging in, you can change the email address if you need to. Check out this guide for details about: Recover your account when you can't sign in.

I don't have the gear button in the upper right hand corner to log off. under file all I have is exit. I need to log off to sign into my new and updated one so that the old one doesn't keep coming up. Please help
I've got your back to help you log off in your QuickBooks account, @Melissa561.
The Gear button is available in QuickBooks Online. Since you mentioned File and Exit, I assumed that you're using the Desktop version of QuickBooks.
For you to log out of the software and open a new file, here's what you need to do:
Moreover, I've added some articles to help you manage your account and create data in the software:
Fill me in if you have other questions about signing out and opening a new account in QuickBooks. I'll be right here to provide further assistance whenever you need it. Keep safe and have a pleasant day!
Have three people in the office. My company file that allows logoff is on my computer but not on the other computers in the office. Gear button doesn't allow for a logoff/sign-off on anyone's computer. Cleared one of their Intuit cookies - no change. Migrating to QB Online was the worst decision I've made in recent memory. Used desktop for 15 years with no issues whatsoever. Why would the online version show a symbol that allows logging off be there one day and gone the next? A mystery that continues to be permanently unanswered as QB can't update its online program to be friendly to the USER. Chrome, Firefox, etc. They have all been around for awhile. People using these programs is not a surprise. QB should work consistently on all of them. I don't think that's too much to ask. It's really just a matter of QB caring enough to fix the problem - clearly, as of right now, they just don't. Frankly, I don't expect an answer to my frustration and don't want to spend the time to do the programmers' jobs. I have my own job.
Let's work together so you can log off the company file to another computer, Rigamarole City.
Logging out the company file in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is a good practice to protect data security, maintain privacy, ensure accurate user tracking, and prevent accidental changes or unauthorized access to financial information.
Since clearing the cache won't fix the issue, I suggest getting in touch with our Customer Support Team. This way, they can pull up your account securely and help check the cause of the problem.
Here's how:
To ensure you'll be assisted on time, please see our support hours.
It would be best if you provide them with detailed information about the issue, including the specific steps you have taken and any error messages encountered, to help them understand and resolve the problem more effectively.
I appreciate your patience as we work through this. If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to comment below.
F'n Blue button disappeared AGAIN WTH!
Right?! How do we log off at the end of the day without the option of talking to a human and the wait time is 32 minutes....ugh.
I am having the same issue. I need to log out of one company and into another and it keeps opening up the same company file. The only way I have been able to successfully log out is to go under the gear icon and switch to "Business View" and then, like magic, the icon to log out appears. Hope this saves someone else out there some time and anguish.
THANK YOU, KGould! You have provided only working solution to this issue that I have found. QB should send you a check for doing its customer service work.
