Can a custom Trial Balance report be created that shows a Beginning Balance column, Net change Debit and Credit Columns, and an Ending Balance column?

Hey @KareninAZ,

Currently, there’s no option to create a customized Trial Balance report in QuickBooks. Because it's statement reporting only the debits and credits of your accounts.

Also, you’re only able to edit the Report period you wish to show on the report.

While this option isn’t available, I’ll personally send feedback to our engineers. This way, they'll know about your suggestion to customize the Trial Balance report. They can consider adding this to future product updates.

Please let me know if you have other concerns.

Is there a way to customize it in QB Premier?  I have never worked with a program that would let you have the beginning balance.  That is a standard for yearend financials sent to CPA's for tax returns.

Thanks!

Hi there, @telrod.

Thank you for posting in the Community. Allow me to help share some details about customizing the Trial Balance report.

You can customize the Trial Balance in QuickBooks Desktop, however, the option to add the Beginning Balance in the report isn't available. As mentioned by my colleague, Alessandra_B this report only confirms the total of all debit balances matches the total of all credit balances in each account.

I've attached some articles as future reference:

These resources should help to get you on the right track. Stay in touch if you have any other questions about customizing reports in QuickBooks Desktop. I'll be happy to help you out. Have a great rest of your week.

That is nearly what I have been looking for as well. We were running AccountEdge (formerly MYOB) and the trial balance is dumped into a mapped Excel model each month - and the mapping cannot be changed.

We need:

Beginning Balance

Debits

Credits

Net Activity

Ending Balance

So, we're clearly not the only people on the planet needing this format!

I DID find one report in the report in the "contributed" reports that is called "Comparative Trial Balance" that shows beginning, ending balances & net acvitity. I hope that helps you somewhat.

Can a custom Trial Balance report be created that shows a Beginning Balance column, Net change Debit and Credit Columns, and an Ending Balance column?

Hi Alessandra,

We need something very similar. We are attempting to replicate a report that came out of AccountEdge (formerly MYOB). The trial balance gets dumped into a mapped Excel model and cannot be changed, so were therefore are desparately in need of this report so that we can produce month-end financials.

We need the following columns:

Beginning balance

Total Debits

Total Credits

Net Activity

Ending Balance

Please see attached sample for reference.

Thank you!!

Essentially, what we are in need of is a working trial balance, which is available in the Accountant's version. Is it possible to ask the developers to develop an update for folks that have versions other than the Accountant's version (we have manufacturing & wholesale, for instance). An update/patch with the WTB might solve the issue quite easily since the report already exists in another version of QB. Just a thought!  Thank you!

I need the trial balance report to be customizable as well. Specifically I need to be able to see "Class" on the trial balance. I will use the trial balance export to excel to power the historical data in my financial model. It is shocking to me that the trial balance report is not able to be customized.

Can a custom Trial Balance report be created that shows a Beginning Balance column, Net change Debit and Credit Columns, and an Ending Balance column?

I can't believe that Quickbooks Online doesn't have a standard Trial Balance which has four columns:

1) Beginning Balance,

2) Debit (total Debit for the period),

3) Credit (total Credit for the period) and

4) Ending Balance.

This is so basic, but I only see the TB that has two columns: Debit and Credit which list the ending balances of the period, not the transactions.  This is an useless TB.  The auditors won't accept it.

Has there any development in the standard four columns Trail Balance?  Our auditors need this also and the one currently in QB online is useless.

I can provide some information with our Trial Balance report, @Sunnydale.

Currently, the Trial Balance report that we have summarizes the debit and credit balances of each account on your chart of accounts during a period.

I understand the importance of having the Beginning Balance and Ending Balance of your Trial Balance, so I’ll take note of it. That will surely help in providing an accurate report to your accountant.

In the meantime, I suggest checking out our QuickBooks Blog to check for new updates and features that we have.

You can check out this article to know more about the reports that we have in QuickBooks Online: Run Reports. If you want to learn more about customizing reports, you can refer to this article: Customize Reports.

Any update?? Still in need of a Trial Balance with Beginning Balance, debits and credits, and ending balance.  I use it to compare last year to the current year, and see if any errors jump out.  Why is this not a thing? It is easier than pulling a balance sheet comparison, and then a P&L comparison.  All in 1 place would be so helpful.

I finally had to purchase an after-market product - Intuit sent me a listing of after-market resources for various things. We have been using a product called Trial Balance Exporter and it worked really well - solved my issue. It's relatively inexpensive.

Hello there, @CCChris. Welcome back to the Community.

I agree that it would be ideal and more convenient to track your account balances if the beginning balance, credit, debit, and ending balance were all included in one report. However, it is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Online. For now, we suggest submitting feedback directly to our software engineers. They may consider your suggestion and add it to our future product updates. To submit feedback, here's how:

  1. Open your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Go to the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  3. Type in your suggestion and click Next.

Check out this link to learn how to personalize your financial statements: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online

You can also export the report to excel if you need to change the fonts, colors, or other aspects of the visual appearance.

If you have further  questions or concerns about managing financial reports in QuickBooks Online, feel free to get in touch with us again. We're available 24/7. Have a nice day!

Can a custom Trial Balance report be created that shows a Beginning Balance column, Net change Debit and Credit Columns, and an Ending Balance column?

Hi, I manage a title and escrow company in Florida and part of my reconciliation compliance is a trial balance report on the escrow/trust account.  I cannot generate that report without showing my operating account balances as well.  If there any way i could either customize the report (which I have unsuccessfully tried) if have someone at QB prepare a template report that I can use?  Thanks,

Ugh.

Desktop has this option, espeicially reflecting journal entries separately from transactions during the period.

I understand the frustration you're experiencing. JCL11.  I can help address your need for a report that shows the beginning balance as of a specific date, along with debits, credits, and the ending balance for a trust account.

You can generate the Reconciliation report to see the beginning and ending balance.

  1. Navigate to the Reports section.
  2. Enter Reconciliation Report in the Find report by name search bar.
  3. Select the Reconciliation Reports category.
  4. Choose the desired account for the reconciliation report you wish to view.
  5. From the Report period dropdown, select the reconcile dates.
  6. Click on the View Report button.

You can also export the report if you need to change the fonts, colors, or other aspects of the visual appearance. For detailed steps, here's how to export reports to Excel.

For future reference, you can customize your report to display what is only relevant to you and your business.

Don't hesitate to tag my name in the comment section below if you have other concerns or questions. I'm always ready to help.
